Tue, Jun 24th 2008 17:38
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
Scientific/Engineering :: Physics
About: Fimex is a the File Interpolation, Manipulation and EXtraction
library for gridded geospatial data. It converts between different,
extensible data formats (currently felt and netcdf). It enables you to
change the projection and interpolation of scalar and vector grids. It
makes it possible subset the gridded data and to extract only parts of the

Changes: A bugfix for vector interpolation solves erroneus v-components.
The performance of vector interpolation has been improved. Renaming of
nonexistent variables or dimensions gives an error message instead of a
segmentation fault. The include files have been moved to the fimex
subfolder. The MIN_DATETIME/MAX_DATETIME fields in felt2nc_variables allow
for additional information, which can be useful for 'Expired' fields.

[011] - gnormalize 0.62
by Claudio F. S. Rodrigues (http://freshmeat.net/users/claudiofsr/)
Tue, Jun 24th 2008 12:30
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: gnormalize is a utility that rips, normalizes, encodes, and
converts audio files. It uses 'wavegain' to normalize wave files with the
accurate gain_analysis.c code from ReplayGain. It decodes MP3, MP4 (or M4A
or AAC), MPC (or MPP or MP+), OGG, APE, or FLAC files to wave, then
normalizes the wave and re-encodes it. It can rip audio CDs, encode audio
data, convert audio formats between MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, APE, and FLAC, and
change the encoding properties and edit meta info (like title, artist,
album, etc.) of the final normalized files.
Changes: The ability to play tracks that satisfy established filters in a
more convenient way was added. The available filters are 'Play Tracks From
Different Albums/Artists/Genres/Years'. For example, if the filter is set
to Albums, one track will be played from each album until all albums have
been played. Columns that show the 'Play Count' were added to the albums
and artists tree view. The program now starts playing when one track is
double clicked.

[018] - Mauve 2.2.0
by Aaron Darling (http://freshmeat.net/users/darling/)
Tue, Jun 24th 2008 14:25
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: Mauve constructs global multiple alignments of rearranged genome
sequences. It also provides an interactive display of multi-species
sequence conservation and any annotated features in those genomes. It can
be applied for sequence comparison of both finished or incomplete genomes
in multiple contigs. The resulting display is useful for identifying
functional chromosomal regions under selective pressure and for performing
ortholog assignment based on conserved gene order. Mauve writes global
alignments in eXtended Multi-FastA (XMFA) format, a phylogenetic guide tree
in Newick format, and the location of genomic islands. It identifies the
breakpoints of genomic rearrangement and can provide a reduction of the
genomes to a signed permutation matrix suitable for inference of
rearrangement history.
Changes: Sensitivity problems in progressiveMauve were fixed. A 64-bit
Linux "waiting" bug was fixed. Memory usage of the default configuration
was reduced.

[029] - ufdbGuard 1.15
by UFDB support (http://freshmeat.net/users/ufdb/)
Tue, Jun 24th 2008 14:31
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: ufdbGuard is a URL filter. The URL filter blocks access to sets of
Web sites on the Internet and is designed to be used with the popular Web
proxy server, Squid. ufdbGuard also dynamically detects proxy tunnels and
blocks access. The multi-threaded daemon uses a fast algorithm that does
25,000 URL verifications per second on an Intel 2.8 GHz Xeon CPU. On a
Conroe Core 2 at 2.4 GHz, the speed is nearly doubled.
Changes: Five minor bugs were fixed and thirteen enhancements were made.
The most important enhancements are a GUI based on webmin to manage the
configuration options, SafeSearch for an additional 6 search engines,
detection of more types of URL obfuscations, feedback by the installation
procedure where the system start script is installed, and improvement of
the performance of agressive HTTPS protocol checks. A new URL category has
been made public. The "External Applications" category contains URLs of Web
sites with Web-based document editors, spreadsheets, groupware, etc.

Scientific/Engineering
About: VisIt is an interactive parallel visualization and graphical
analysis tool for viewing scientific data. Users can quickly generate
visualizations from their data, animate them through time, manipulate them,
and save the resulting images for presentations. VisIt contains a rich set
of visualization features so that you can view your data in a variety of
ways. It can be used to visualize scalar and vector fields defined on two-
and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) structured and unstructured meshes. It
was designed to interactively handle very large data set sizes in the
terascale range, and works well down to small data sets in the kilobyte
range.
Changes: This release fixes important bugs found in the 1.9.0 major
release, including several crashes. In addition, improvements have been
made to the XDMF, CGNS, SimV1, Silo, Miranda, and Exodus database reader
plugins. Recent changes in support deprecate the [email protected] email
list for the better [email protected] email list, which provides
archival. Finally, a VisIt wiki and user forum are available at
www.visitusers.org.
