Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that helps you develop and deploy high-performance
networked applications faster and with less code to write and maintain. ACE
is especially useful for systems that use network and/or inter-process
communications and that take advantage of multithreading. While the ACE
source code is free, that's not the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's
wrappers and higher-level patterns help you develop your software quickly
and portably, helping you to complete your projects on time and within
budget.

Changes: This release fixes IFR issues related to the use of and browsing
of declared but undefined structs. The Notification Monitor Control has
been extended by adding the ability to remove consumer and supplier proxies
and consumer and suplier admins. This release fixes a bug in AV Streams
relating to multi-stage communications. It fixes a bug with the
TAO::SYNC_DELAYED_BUFFERING policy. It adds experimental stack tracing
capability. It fixes a bug with linking to static and dynamic libraries.

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Scientific/Engineering

About: CODESH (COllaborative DEvelopment SHell) is an automatic persistent
logbook for sessions of personal command line work. It records what and how
is being done, for private use/reuse and for sharing selected parts with
collaborators. It is an intelligent shell that automatically logs user's
shell sessions. Sessions are uniquely tagged and stored in local or
distributed backend repositories (ASCII flat file or Subversion or CVS
based) and can be extracted and reproduced at any time by the user who
created the session or by collaborators located anywhere in the world.

Changes: The focus of this version is the distributed computing (remote)
aspects of CODESH. A new subdirectory "remote" is introduced. It contains
sample scripts showing how to set up remote (client/server based)
Subversion, CVS, and ASCII backends, along with detailed documentation. The
scripts can be used not only to set up CODESH backends, but general purpose
remote Subversion or CVS pserver repositories as well. As usual, extreme
caution and studying the documentation in advance is recommended before
setting up servers.

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: FET (free timetabling tool) automatically schedules the timetable
of a school, high school, or university. It aims to have the same
functionality as expensive scheduling programs.

Changes: Preferred STARTING times for constraint activity(ies) were added.
The old preferred time constraints have been renamed to preferred time
slots and are more correct now, taking into consideration the duration of
each activity. FET now allows more constraint activity preferred starting
times (or preferred time slots) for the same activity ID, which was
restricted by a bug to only one. You can add more constraints with

Text Processing :: General

About: ICU provides a Unicode implementation, with functions for
formatting numbers, dates, times, and currencies (according to locale
conventions, transliteration, and parsing text in those formats). It
provides flexible patterns for formatting messages, where the pattern
determines the order of the variable parts of the messages, and the format
for each of those variables. These patterns can be stored in resource files
for translation to different languages. Included are more than 100 codepage
converters for interaction with non-unicode systems.

Changes: This is a major release with new features, new APIs, and many

[055] - ucanvcam 0.1.5
  by Paul (http://freshmeat.net/users/eshuy/)

Artistic Software

Multimedia :: Video

About: ucanvcam is a cross-platform framework for building virtual
cameras. Virtual cameras offer the same interface as regular cameras to
client applications (such as Skype), but provide user-generated or
user-modified imagery rather than imagery directly from a camera. While
ucanvcam comes with a set of special effects, the main intent is to make
building virtual cameras easier for people without OS-specific knowledge,
so they can focus purely on image processing.

Changes: The main addition was to support the "picmix" effect, where
animations created with Blender can be used as surfaces for the webcam
image.

[056] - Units of measurement for Ada 2.7
  by Dmitry Kazakov (http://freshmeat.net/users/kazakov/)
  Wed, Jul 2nd 2008 20:15

Scientific/Engineering

About: The library provides an implementation of dimensioned values for
Ada. Unit checks are made at run-time, if not optimized out by the
compiler. SI and irregular measurement units are supported. Shifted units
like degrees Celsius are supported too. Conversions from and back to
strings are provided for all various irregular units. An extensive set of
GTK widgets for dealing with dimensioned values is included, though use of
GTK is not mandatory for the rest of the library.

Changes: This version is adapted to GtkAda 2.10.2, which has changed
behavior of popup windows.

[058] - wxRemind 84
  by Dan Graham (http://freshmeat.net/users/dgraham/)

Information Management
Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: wxRemind is a wxPython-based front/back-end for Remind, a powerful
calendar and alarm application. The display features a calendar and daily
event list suitable for visualizing your schedule at a glance. Dates and
associated events can be quickly selected either with the mouse or cursor
keys, and dates in the calendar are color coded to reflect the total
duration of scheduled events. wxRemind integrates with an external editor
of your choice to make editing of reminder files more efficient, provides
hotkeys to quickly access the most commonly used options, and allows popup,
sound, and/or spoken alarms.

Changes: This release adds settings for customizing the date format to the
configuration file. The default is now to display the week and day of the
year numbers in parentheses in the datebar, e.g. "Reminders for Thu, Jul
24, 2008 (week 29, day 205):", but this can easily be changed to whatever
is desired.
