About: Augeas is a configuration API and editing tool. It parses common
configuration files like /etc/hosts or /etc/grub.conf in their native
formats and transforms them into a tree. Configuration changes are made by
manipulating this tree and saving it back into native configuration files.

Changes: Various bugfixes (one that made saving into empty files fail).
New lenses for NFS exports and dput. This release is now also available in
Ubuntu and Debian, and there are new Perl bindings.

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random, Least
Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a
customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to set
up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports SNMP,
integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It implements a very fast
in-memory IP-to-location database, allowing powerful location-based server
load-balancing.

Changes: The DNS-based Global Server Load-Balancing (GSLB) feature has
been added, introducing the commands "server <n> gslb dispatch", "server
<n> gslb enable", and "server <n> gslbttl". The manual has been updated to
release 2.170.0. The Ubuntu JeOS VMware virtual appliance has been updated
accordingly.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Cibyl is a programming environment that allows compiled C/C++
programs to execute on J2ME-capable phones. Cibyl uses GCC to compile
programs to MIPS binaries, and these are then translated into Java
bytecode. The use of binary translation and the simplicity of translating
MIPS instructions means that Cibyl programs can be quite well-performing.
With Cibyl, programs written in C/C++ can be ported to J2ME without
switching languages.

Changes: The Python translator is now deprecated, and all important
features are part of the C++ translator. Better support is available for
exporting C functionality to Java. File handling for J2SE has been
implemented. The translated code can now be generated in a thread-safe
manner.

[008] - Clue 0.2
  by David Given (http://freshmeat.net/users/dgtaocouk/)
  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 13:34

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Clue is an experimental ANSI C compiler that targets high level
dynamic languages like Lua, JavaScript, Python, and Perl. It is designed to
be very easy to adapt to new targets. It is currently under development and
is more interesting than useful, although it is complete enough to run
several benchmarking tools (including Whetstone).

Changes: This version supports JavaScript and Lua backends. C compiled to
Lua runs at about one fifth of native speed (using Mike Pall's LuaJIT
engine), while when compiled to JavaScript it runs at 1/80th of native
speed (using SpiderMonkey). Not all of the C language is covered. Notable
omissions are switch and varargs, but enough is there to be interesting.

Software Development :: Version Control

About: deltasql is a tool to synchronize databases with source code, which
helps to keep database evolution under control. While developing mid-sized
or big applications, developers make changes to the data model that go
along with changes to the source code. From time to time, branches of
source code are done to stabilize the code that will go to production. A
sort of data model branch is also needed. deltasql provides a simple way to
collect all scripts that change the data model and means to handle data
model branches. The deltasql server runs on Apache and is backed by MySQL.

System :: Monitoring

About: Fail2ban monitors log files and temporarily or persistently bans
failure-prone addresses by updating existing firewall rules. The software
allows easy specification of different actions to be taken such as to ban
an IP address using iptables or hostsdeny rules, or simply to send a
notification email. It supports many services, and configuration can be
easily extended for monitoring any other ASCII file. All filters and
actions are given in the configuration files, thus fail2ban can be adopted
to be used with a variety of files and firewalls.

Changes: failtickets are processed as long as failmanager is not empty.
The "pam-generic" filter and more configuration fixes were added. The PID
file while started in daemon mode was fixed. The "fail2ban-client get jail
logpath" was fixed. The gssftpd filter was added. The "Day/Month/Year
Hour:Minute:Second" date template was added. ignoreregex processing was
fixed in fail2ban-client. The ISO 8601 date/time format was added. Some
logging levels and messages were added and changed. Poll is used instead of
select in asyncore.loop. This should solve the "Unknown error 514".

About: Granite Data Services (GDS) is an alternative to Adobe LiveCycle
(Flex 2) Data Services for J2EE application servers. It is not, however, a
drop-in replacement: you won't be able to simply deploy a Flex 2 Data
Services application into a Granite Data Services server without
modifications. The main goal of this project is to provide a framework for
Flex 2/EJB3/Spring/Seam/Guice/Pojo application development with full
AMF3/RemoteObject benefits. It has a Data Push feature implemented as AMF3
requests sent over HTTP (Comet).

Changes: Beside several bugfixes, this release comes with a huge Tide

Internet
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Grapple is designed to be a simple network layer, allowing the
addition of multiuser features to an application for as little as a dozen
lines of code. However, it also allows for more. It features simple
client-server networking that keeps all clients aware of all other clients,
passworded servers, and data transfer via TCP, UDP, or reliable UDP.
Advanced features include network messaging via push, pull, or a
combination, multiple methods of querying users, user groups for client
bandwidth saving, network load reacting data transmission and
retransmission, background pinging to monitor network states, server
failover, and a fully functional lobby system.

Changes: This release adds further updates for Win32 compatibility and
bugfixes for 64-bit system. Further work has been done on the encrypted
network layer, and it is now possible to create encrypted connections, as
long as you provide valid keys.

  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 16:40

About: HLBR is an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) that can filter
packets directly in layer 2 of the OSI model (invisible to attackers).
Detection of malicious/anomalous traffic is done by rules based on
signatures. It is an efficient and versatile IPS, and can be used as a
bridge to honeypots and honeynets. HLBR is a firewall element and can use
regular expressions to detect malicious traffic. For example, a rule which
might detect links to viruses in email messages would be 'tcp
regex(href="[^\n]+\.scr")'.

adds install-daemon to Makefile.in, changes some rules, fixes JTree issues,
and makes IPDefrag work.

About: John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for
many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different
architectures), Win32, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to
detect weak Unix passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash
types which are most commonly found on various Unix flavors, as well as
Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP LM hashes. Several other hash types are
added with contributed patches.

Changes: Besides the update to 1.7.3 (and thus including all of the
improvements of that version in a well-tested native package), new with
this release is official support for Windows NTLM (MD4-based) and Mac OS X
10.4+ salted SHA-1 hashes. Also included is a pre-built RPM package for
64-bit capable systems, which makes use of 64-bit mode extended SSE2. This
is a free upgrade for everyone who has purchased the product in the past.

Changes: This release focuses on better x86-64 support. Most notably, two
Blowfish-based crypt(3) hashes may now be computed in parallel for much
better performance on x86-64, and new make targets have been added for Mac
OS X 10.5+ (Leopard) and recent versions of Solaris on 64-bit capable x86
processors, producing 64-bit builds that make use of the 64-bit mode
extended SSE2. As a bonus, "DumbForce" and "KnownForce" external mode
samples have been added to the default john.conf.

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Monitoring

About: The Prelude Library (libprelude) is the glue that binds all aspects
of Prelude together. Prelude is a hybrid Intrusion Detection framework
implementing an open communication layer for use by any security
application. libprelude is a library that enables Prelude components to
communicate with the Prelude concentrator. It also makes it easy for third
party software to be made 'Prelude Aware' (able to communicate with Prelude
components). It provides common, useful features used by every sensor.

Changes: This release supports TLS settings specification through the
"tls-options" configuration entry. It works around a rare compression
protocol negotiation problem. Variable substitution in Prelude
configuration files is implemented. IDMEF criteria with multiples values
for a single path are allowed (eg: alert.classification.text = (A || B || C
|| D). Negation of whole idmef-criteria has been implemented. A possible
IDMEFCriteria match problem has been fixed. An API consistency issue that
could lead to unexpected behavior has been fixed. There are various other
bugfixes.

[033] - MCS MyRoute 8.0e
  by Visualware Inc. (http://freshmeat.net/users/trish/)
  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 16:24

Internet
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Security

About: MCS MyRoute helps diagnose connectivity problems with detailed
network routing discovery and analysis, providing visibility to
poor-performing networks and devices. It includes a Java applet that
enables remote users to easily test connections from the MyRoute server.
Essential diagnostic tools including traceroute, ping, reverse DNS, and
whois are combined into a single graphical interface that analyzes Internet
connections, reporting quick and essential data points for finding
connectivity problems. An IP location database identifies the geographical
location of IP addresses and Web servers, showing the path of an Internet
connection on a global map. The domain registration and network provider
contact information are reported for each hop of a network route for quick
problem reporting. Remote Agents enable two-way connection testing and
automated testing from remote locations, for on-demand testing to resolve a
customer problem or long-term continuous testing to build a baseline and
monitor connection performance.

Changes: MCS MyRoute v8 (formerly VisualRoute Server) is now a plugin
component of MyConnection Server. MyRoute has a greatly-improved install
process for Linux/Unix, with more user-friendly browser-based
administration. The IP database has been updated for more accurate IP
location reporting.

[034] - MirBSD Korn Shell R35b
  by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 23:17

System :: Shells

About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with the primary focus on scripting. It is intended to
be portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well as
bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS, FreeWRT, and MidnightBSD
projects. The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte
Order Marks are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well
as all pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible
with the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits), has no limit on array
sizes, and incorporates some other useful builtins and features. While
being already fast and small (without losing functionality), flags to make
it even smaller can be given at compile time. An interactive shell reads
"~/.mkshrc" on startup.

Changes: This release fixes attempts to free stack storage, unsafe use of
strdup(3)-like internal functions, and some minor things in the build
system.

  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 20:35

Communications :: Telephony
Internet
System :: Diagnostics

About: MyConnection Server is broadband testing software which measures
connections for bandwidth speeds and connection quality for time critical
applications such as VoIP, Video conferencing, and IPTV. It helps
organizations assess networks for deployment of new/additional services and
identify and resolve last mile customer connectivity problems with little
need for the customer to assist in the resolution process. A network route
testing component details the path of the connections and where packet loss
and latency occur, including discovery of multiple routes to a destination.
Remote Test Agents enable technical staff to customize and interactively
manage the bandwidth testing process and perform extended quality testing
over hours or days to address and resolve intermittent problems as
required. Satellite Servers establish additional connection testing points
at the application edge to accurately test actual application network
paths.

Changes: This release introduces a new framework architecture with
multiple network test and analysis plugins to measure bandwidth speeds and
connection quality, network route performance, VoIP call quality, streaming
video quality, and IPTV quality. Satellite Servers establish additional
connection testing points at the application edge to accurately test actual
application network paths. Remote Agents enable automated testing from
remote locations, for on-demand testing to resolve a remote connection
problem, or long-term testing to build a baseline and monitor connection
performance.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Monitoring

About: The MyCAT project is a toolset for managing MySQL/Linux servers,
and could be helpful for anyone managing a network of *nix servers whether
running MySQL Cluster, standard replication, or not running MySQL at all.
At present, it contains three programs. rcall eases use and administration
of groups (clusters) of *nix servers by creating logical groupings and a
single location from which to run commands on all servers while entering it
only once. It requires only an SSH connection. rep_mon is a replication
monitor that notifies if a server is lagging or has encountered any errors.
It handles any replication topology easily. binlog_mon monitors disk space
used by MySQL binary logs, purging only when disk space is needed. It
checks all slaves to ensure that purged files are not still being read by
slaves. It has configurable behavior in the event that a slave still needs
the oldest file.

  Fri, Jul 18th 2008 14:18

Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Prelude-Manager is a high-availability server that collects and
normalizes information from distributed Prelude-IDS sensors and stores them
in a database (or any kind of user-provided media). It is part of Prelude,
a hybrid Intrusion Detection framework implementing an open communication

About: WebGUI is a content management framework built to allow average
business users to build and maintain complex Web sites. It is modular,

who create the content to manage it online, rather than content management
taking up the time of busy IT staff. WebGUI comes with a full host of
features including shopping cart, subscriptions, forums, photo galleries,
FAQs, link lists, blogs, SQL reports, a Web services interface, and a very
configurable user privilege and profiling system.

Changes: A number of fixes were added to the Shop, data form, and gallery.
