[002] - Absolute OS 12.1.06
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 09:54
About: Absolute Linux is a lightweight Slackware derivative that uses an
Icewm, pcmanfm, ROX-Filer, ivman, and others to create a lightweight yet
easy to use distribution. Installation is text-based but simplified, and
all packages are installed at once. It can run on a Pentium MMX with 64MB
of RAM (PII 400 with 128MB recommended). It features ease of browsing any
connected device in pcmanfm and an auto-popup menu for inserted playable
media. "Restricted" codecs are available to those eligible via a root-user
installer. Along with CD2 there is a large range of software compiled on
and for Absolute, including OpenOffice, Mplayer, GIMP, and K3B.
Changes: The installer was rewritten. It now has an autosetup feature for
those who want to allow the installer to partition the hard drive and
install a bootloader (LILO) for them. Permissions on the Firefox startup
script (for Firefox-3.0.1) were fixed so that it runs for users properly.
Several packages were updated for security-related reasons.

Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 21:09
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems
System :: Systems Administration
About: cryptmount is a utility for creating and managing secure filing
systems on GNU/Linux systems. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided by
the kernel dm-crypt system and the libgcrypt library) can be used to
protect both the filesystem and the access key. The protected filing
systems can reside in either ordinary files or disk partitions. The package
also supports encrypted swap partitions, and automatic configuration on
system boot-up.
Changes: Support for mounting encrypted filesystems created by
cryptsetup-luks was added. Mechanisms for changing passwords on LUKS
partitions were added. Methods for creating basic new LUKS partitions were
added.

[012] - Daikon 4.4.2
by Jeff Perkins (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhpnez/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 09:51
Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.
Changes: Daikon's set of invariants and derived variables enabled by
default was changed to provide more relevant invariants. Configuration
options were added for some invariants. Bugs were fixed in Daikon and
Chicory.

[014] - Digmia Enterprise SSH 1.1g
by Juraj Bednar (http://freshmeat.net/users/jooray/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 23:35
Internet
About: DSSH was written as a direct replacement for the OpenSSH client. It
adds SSH over SSH tunneling capabilities (for example, to log in to a
network hidden by a firewall), scripting support (using Groovy), an
advanced agent (which allows storing of passwords) and "su -" interactive
logging for machines that have disabled direct root login. All of this was
done to enable automated scripting and logging to many machines based on a
few simple rules. It uses the Trilead SSH library (slightly patched).
Changes: This release adds scp mode by popular request (just add -s and it
should work as a normal scp command). Recursive mode is not yet supported.
It has been ported to the latest Trilead SSH library (which is a successor
of Ganymed SSH). It is the same code base, but package names have changed
and few features were added.

Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 09:50
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: Fotoxx is a program for improving digital photos. It allows you to
navigate through large image directories using a window of thumbnail
images, create HDR (high dynamic range) images by combining bright and dark
images to improve details visible in both bright and dark areas, create
panoramas by joining overlapped images, adjust brightness and color
intensity independently for different underlying brightness levels, reduce
fog or haze by removing "whiteness" and intensifying colors, rotate an
image (level a tilted image or turn 90 degrees), remove red-eyes from
electronic flash photos, sharpen, resize, or crop images, reduce noise in
low-light photos, change color depth, and stretch an image by dragging the
mouse.
Changes: This release focuses on improvements in convenience and
usability. Scroll bars were added to more easily pan across large images.
Zoom in/out with toolbar buttons or left/right mouse buttons (zoom to the
mouse position). The +/- keys can also be used for zoom. Slide show mode
was added to the menu, and several control functions were mapped to the
keyboard. Select Area is now a separate dialog that can be used parallel
with relevant edit dialogs to edit a mouse-outlined section of the image.
The user guide was converted from PDF to HTML.

[016] - fsniper 1.2
by Andrew Yates (http://freshmeat.net/users/andrewyates/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 21:11
Utilities
About: fsniper is a tool that monitors a given set of directories for new
or modified files. Then, based on the file's type or name, it invokes a
script to be run on that file. Directories are monitored using inotify,
instead of simply continuously polling them for changes. Common uses
include making a single download directory for all things from a Web
browser and having semi-intelligent scripts figure out what to do with
those files. You write the scripts yourself.
Changes: This release automatically watches new directories created in
recursively watched directories, and fixes a configuration file parsing
regression that resulted in comments causing crashes.

[019] - launch4j 3.0.1 (Stable)
by Grzegorz Kowal (http://freshmeat.net/users/grzegok/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 21:06
Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: Launch4j is a cross-platform tool for wrapping Java applications
distributed as jars in Windows native executables. The executable can be
configured to search for a certain JRE version or use a bundled one, and
it's possible to set runtime options, like the initial/max heap size. The
wrapper also provides better user experience through an application icon, a
native pre-JRE splash screen, a custom process name, and a Java download
page in case the appropriate JRE cannot be found. The increase in size of
the application is small.
Changes: Support for 64-bit Windows, 64-bit JRE, and IBM JRE was added. A
Java runtime preference option was introduced. It is now possible to set
the initial process priority and allow running only a single instance of
the application. Dynamic initial and maximum heap sizes were added. The
error reporting was redesigned and now supports custom messages. The
runtime logging produces more detailed output. Various bugs were fixed, and
the license was changed to a less restrictive one.

About: OfflineIMAP is a tool to simplify email reading. It allows you to
read the same mailbox from multiple computers and ensures that your changes
will be automatically reflected on all computers. You can use various mail
clients to read a single box or read mail while offline with full
synchronization when you reconnect. You can read IMAP mail with readers
that lack IMAP support (same goes for SSL). OfflineIMAP's multithreaded
synchronization algorithm performs between 10 and 60 times faster than many
mail readers' internal IMAP support, and it can be used even with mail
readers that support IMAP already. There are five available user interface
modules, including scripted execution, an interactive terminal interface,

not save the actual data or headers. It works on ethX or cooked devices
like ppp0. It uses Postgres embedded SQL to insert the data, pcap to
capture traffic, and pthreads to capure and write at the same time. Pcap
filters can be specified on the command line. Logs go to syslog.
Changes: The database interface has been completely rewritten to use
libodbc++ and support ODBC. PostgreSQL and MySQL have been tested and the
new schema is provided (as well as example odbc.ini files). Work is ongoing
to support native PostgreSQL again with a configure argument. The project
host has been moved to SourceForge and a subversion repository has been
started.

[032] - Seed7 2008-08-03
by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 21:25
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements and
operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.
Changes: The charsets.s7i library was renamed to chartype.s7i. A new
charsets.s7i library, with 44 codepages and an encoding.s7i library, was
added. The functions getWord, getQuotedText, getHttpSymbol,
getSymbolOrComment, getSymbol, getXmlTagOrContent, and getSymbolInHtmlTag
were added or improved. Two 'for' loops and the functions str, lpad0,
striToUtf8, utf8ToStri, and toInt were added to seed7_05.s7i. The compiler
was improved to generate better code. Now the actions STR_APPEND, STR_CAT,
and STR_HEAD use strings with capacity. The functions socClose, socGetc,
socLineRead, and socWordRead were improved.

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
About: Sound Converter is a simple sound converter application for the
GNOME environment. It reads anything the GStreamer library can read, and

Changes: This release adds AAC encoding support. It uses the gstreamer gio
source when available. Create-folders is also activated when using
same-as-input-folder. Slashes in tags have been fixed (no more creating
unwanted folders). This is just a fast hack: slashes are just replaced by
dashes. A crash when gnomevfssink is not present hsa been fixed. A small
crash in batch mode has been fixed. The Polish translation has been
updated.

[036] - The Frink Language 2008-08-02
by Alan Eliasen (http://freshmeat.net/users/eliasen/)
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 09:59
Education
Internet
Scientific/Engineering
About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.
Changes: This release fixes the calculation of Julian day for B.C. dates.
In addition, the handling of the switch between the Julian and the
Gregorian calendar was made more consistent. This enables proper date/time
math for dates in the distant past. If performing analysis with dates
before 1583, updating is strongly recommended. Several astronomy libraries
were also improved, and functions to control output format were added.
