[014] - deco archive file extractor 1.4
  by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
  Mon, Aug 4th 2008 17:08

System :: Archiving

About: deco is a universal archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions. Dozens of
archive formats are supported out of the box, and the modular design makes
adding support for others trivial.

Changes: In case of a conflict, the top-level entry’s name is prefixed
with 1-, 2-, ..., 5- instead of %, %%, ..., %%%%%. The code has been
slightly improved.

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Freeciv is a multiuser reimplementation for Unix/X of the famous
Microprose game of Civilization. By default, the game is an improved Civ
II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU General
Public License. It is maintained by an international team of coders and
enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive network games
out there.

Changes: Fixes for bootstrap and compilation issues, rulesets, several
bugs concerning player handling and game loading, and for a number of
corner case crashes. A fix for a memory leak in the readline code. A bug
that prevented adding items to the top of global worklists has been fixed.
Citybar view options have been fixed. There are updates to Estonian,
Korean, Greek, Turkish, Catalan, Swedish, Spanish, and German translations.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: Ghostscript is a processor for PostScript and PDF files. It can
rasterize these files to a wide variety of printers, devices for screen
preview, and image file formats. Since applications tend to prepare pages
for printing in a high-level format such as PostScript, most Unix users
with low-level bitmap printers, such as inkjets, use GhostScript as part of
the printing process. In addition, Ghostscript is capable of converting
PostScript files, functionality comparable to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, but
on the command line. In addition, Ghostscript is used for file import and
viewing by a great many other applications, including xv, ImageMagick,
gimp, and xdvi. Several GUI wrappers for viewing PostScript and PDF files
exist, including GSview, ghostview, gv, ggv, and kghostview. This is far
from a comprehensive list.

Changes: Support for multi-threaded rendering using
"-dNumRenderingThreads=n" was implemented. Images are now always
interpolated in their source colorspace. Support for OpenPrinting Vector
devices was upgraded to version 1.0. Two new experimental devices, a cairo
output device and the svgwrite device, were added. Several robustness and
performance improvements were made for large files, invalid PDF, and font
handling.

About: The JumpBox for Wordpress Blogging System allows anyone to be up
and running with the Wordpress blogging platform in under a minute.
JumpBoxes require virtualization software to run. They are self-contained
instances that can be moved across OS's and hosting environments, and
because they work as a single unit, they're perfect for offline
development.

Changes: The JumpBox has been released to fix a vulnerability in PHP.
Wordpress has been updated to 2.6. Restoring from 1.0RC1 and newer JumpBox
backups should work.

About: mod-xslt is an Apache module that converts XML files into HTML
files using XSLT stylesheets. It was written to overcome most of the
limits of similar modules and uses a standard API, which could easily be
used for other applications or to support more servers. It is able to
parse dynamically generated documents, both in POST and GET requests,
includes a fully featured language to choose the stylesheet to load from
both configuration files and from .xml files, and allows stylesheets to
access server variables. It supports redirects, dynamically generated
stylesheets, and both Apache 1 and 2.

Changes: In preparation for a released, a new snapshot has been made after
almost 2 years. It includes many bugfixes, better handling for local://
URLs, better debugging details, better support for non-Linux systems, and
official support for Apache 2.2 (and above). Many changes that had been
waiting in CVS and the mailing list have finally reached a snapshot.

[033] - P4A 3.0.2 (Stable)
  by Fabrizio Balliano (http://freshmeat.net/users/balliano/)
  Mon, Aug 4th 2008 14:22

Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: P4A (PHP For Applications) a PHP5 RAD and object oriented PHP
framework for building event-driven, stateful Web applications. It is based
on Zend Framework and features tableless HTML, multiple databases, access
key support, auto data type recognition, transparent AJAX, UTF-8,
internationalization, and localization.

Changes: A change was done on P4A_Array_Source to enable the usage of
empty array_sources. Tooltips are now automatically translated at rendering
time. P4A_DB_Source::saveRow() now reads pk values back from
Zend_DB_Table::insert(), gaining better functionality with auto increment
primary keys. jQuery UI was updated to 1.5.2. A bug with
P4A_I18N::_normalize() was solved. The p4a_focus_set() JavaScript function
was reworked to avoid firebug warnings. Loading a P4A_Array_Source with a
simple array now doesn't create the "0" field; it was renamed to "f0" to
avoid problems with some PHP configurations.

network activities including from remote snort sensors, isolation of
problematic devices, remediation through a captive portal, and
registration-based and scheduled vulnerability scans.

Changes: This maintenance release fixes an issue in the locationlog
expiration and in the way iptables were opened during VLAN isolation. It
also adds a new parameter, interface.authorizedips, to easily allow the
customization of iptable rules on a specific interface. It unifies the
'pfcmd control' and 'pfcmd service' commands and enhances the Web admin
GUI.

About: PDFResurrect is a tool aimed at analyzing PDF documents. The PDF
format allows for previous document changes to be retained in a more recent
version of the document, thereby creating a running history of changes for
the document. This tool attempts to extract all previous versions while
also producing a summary of changes between versions. It can also "scrub"
or write data over the original instances of PDF objects that have been
modified or deleted, in an effort to disguise information from previous
versions that might not be intended for anyone else to read.

[040] - rsyslog 3.21.2 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Mon, Aug 4th 2008 14:23

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text
files to syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to
work with the same configuration file syntax.

Changes: Imuxsock now allows you to specify an alternative hostname to be
used with messages originating from a socket. This is useful for logging
jail processes. Ommail now offers the ability to specify multiple email
recipients. Also, the troubleshooting documentation has been enhanced and
now contains information on debug mode. There are no bugfixes in this
release. This is a recommended update for all devel branch users.

[041] - TKDO 0.5
  by ToyKeeper (http://freshmeat.net/users/toykeeper/)
  Mon, Aug 4th 2008 03:53

Information Management
Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: TKDO is a master TODO list with command line and PyGTK interfaces.
It takes all your VimOutliner todo.otl outlines, merges them into a single
flat list, auto-sorts them, filters them, and adds support for things like
contexts and recurring events. It also has a snooze button, to mark tasks
as "don't bug me about this for a while". The entire system is based on
plain text files, with a GUI to make certain tasks easier and faster. Due
to its plain text nature, it's easy to extend or customize the system with
short scripts.

Changes: This release adds a 'tick' command to wake up tasks via cron. It
adds shorter aliases for CLI commands. The external editor command is
configurable. A 'due_bonus' config has been added for 'due' and 'fixed
recurring' tasks. The default max overdue values have been raised to 1.75
and 1.333. An issue where "@" was a context has been fixed. This release
sorts contexts before saving to keep the order consistent. An '-N' option
has been added to the 'cal' command to limit output to N items.

[042] - Trisul 0.4.162
  by Vivek Rajagopalan (http://freshmeat.net/users/vivekrajan/)
  Mon, Aug 4th 2008 20:33

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Trisul meters bandwidth usage, monitors flows, and stores raw
packets for future drilldown analysis. All traffic data is stored in a
SQLITE3 database. It communicates with the outside world via the Trisul
Remote Protocol (TRP) and via a Ruby-on-rails application called Web
Trisul. What sets Trisul apart from other monitoring tools is its
drill-down capabilities for analyzing past events (e.g. "Show me the top
hosts using ICMP at 5AM this morning"). Trisul combined with WebTrisul can
be used as a Web-based network security monitoring platform. Web Trisul
features live SVG charts that allow you to select a time interval and
invoke drill-down analysis using the raw traffic data as the source. You
can also write tools that communicate with Trisul directly via a secure TLS
connection using the Trisul Remote Protocol.

Changes: PPP and PPPoE interfaces are supported. SQLITE3 amalgamation has
been updated to version 3.6. A major stability issue has been fixed. A
memory leak has been fixed with TRP Controlled Context Request. There are
various other fixes and tweaks. Web Trisul (the Rails application) has been
updated to allow multiple capture profiles to be activated at the same
time.
