  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 15:14

System :: Benchmark
System :: Filesystems

About: Bonnie++ is based on the Bonnie hard drive benchmark by Tim Bray.
The most notable features that have been added are support for >2G of
storage and testing operations involving thousands of files in a directory.
This program is used by ReiserFS developers, but can be useful for anyone
who wants to know how fast their hard drive or file system is. It now
includes ZCAV in the package. This program tests the performance of
different zones on the hard drive. ZCAV has been released separately before
but will now only be released as part of the Bonnie++ suite.

Changes: The program now works correctly with 64-bit file access (which
means bonnie++ should work correctly on machines with more than 1G of RAM).
Zcav support now skips chunks of the disk to give a faster result (some
modern disks can take several hours for a single pass otherwise). All units
were changed to GiB and MiB. The zcav output units were changed to match
the new bigger and faster disks.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
Utilities

About: constat is an application that monitors, logs, and reports the
activity of network connections present on a system. It reports
sent/received traffic information for every live network device, giving you
the option of displaying its output in units of kilobytes, megabytes, and
gigabytes, along with the number of transmitted packets. It also includes a
real time monitoring option based on a timer. Additionally, constat
provides the option to view the socket table (local/remote IPs with ports
they are binded to) for a specific protocol or all protocols at once. It
does not require the X server.

Changes: An output only numbers option has been added (-n). A new style of
output formatting (transmitted packets are shown on a separate line). An
option to use old style formatting (-o). A new log format (same as syslog).
The log file has been moved to /var/log/ and renamed to constat.log. The -s
option is extended (the 'more' command is automatically executed when
viewing all entries; -s=<n> shows the last n entries). The monitoring timer
(-m option) default value has changed to 30 seconds. configure has been
added. COPYRIGHT has been renamed to COPYING. INSTALL, TODO, and AUTHORS

  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 15:03

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Version Control

About: deltasql is a tool to synchronize databases with source code, which
helps to keep database evolution under control. While developing mid-sized
or big applications, developers make changes to the data model that go
along with changes to the source code. From time to time, branches of
source code are done to stabilize the code that will go to production. A
sort of data model branch is also needed. deltasql provides a simple way to
collect all scripts that change the data model and means to handle data
model branches. The deltasql server runs on Apache and is backed by MySQL.

Changes: Project module management was improved with the possibility to
delete modules and less confusing navigation. User management was improved
with the possibility to delete users for administrators. Error management
was improved with bugfixes, more error types, and a link to error
documentation if the format is HTML. XML can be exported for advanced
deltasql clients.

  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 15:38

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Manent is an algorithmically strong backup and archival program. It
features efficient backup to anything that looks like storage. Currently it
supports plain filesystems ("directories"), FTP, and SFTP. Planned are
Amazon S3, optical disks, and email (SMTP and IMAP). It can work (making
progress towards finishing a backup) over a slow and unreliable network. It
can offer online access to the contents of the backup. Backed up storage is
completely encrypted. Backup is incremental, including changed parts of
large files. Moved, renamed, and duplicate files will not require
additional storage. Several computers can use the same storage for backup,
automatically sharing data. Both very large and very small files are
supported efficiently. Manent does not rely on timestamps of the remote
system to detect changes.

Changes: Some crashes of the Unicode code under Windows were fixed. On
Windows, Manent now automatically switches the code page to 65001 (UTF8),
so Unicode names show correctly.

2, inspired by Emacs' multiplication game. It displays a multiplication
problem where every digit is replaced by a letter. Your job is to figure
out which letters are which digits.

Changes: The interface for guessing digits/letters has been simplified. A
new Indonesian translation was added, and the Vietnamese and simplified
Chinese translations were updated. The code has been rewritten in Vala and
relicensed under the GPL v3+.

[033] - QMC2 0.2 beta 4
  by Prian (http://freshmeat.net/users/prianthefist/)
  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 20:30

System :: Emulators

About: M.A.M.E. Catalog / Launcher II (also referred to as QMC2) is the
successor of one of the first XMAME GUI frontends available, QMamecat
(derived from MAMECAT, which was text-only). QMC2 has been rebuilt from
scratch as a Qt 4 project. Parts of the design and code were inspired by
its predecessor. The new design was made as flexible as possible to
minimize dependencies from frontend- and CLI-related MAME changes, which
was a major deficiency of QMamecat. QMC2 uses a template-based MAME
configuration scheme, which can easily be enhanced with additional command
line options (defined in an XML template file).

Changes: The joystick test and calibration widgets are now enclosed in
scrollable areas to allow for better handling of high amounts of axes and
buttons - PS3/Sixasis users will profit most (though there are still some
open issues with Sixasis controllers). There are minor speed improvements
for loading of XML and gamelist caches by reading data block-wise. The XML
cache data has been trimmed, saving memory and disk space. The number of
(real/virtual) CPUs is displayed on the system information page. The
frontend and emulator log browsers can now be limited to the amount of
lines they keep in memory.

[038] - Strasheela 0.9.6
  by Torsten Anders (http://freshmeat.net/users/tanders/)
  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 18:41

Artistic Software
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Strasheela is a highly expressive constraint-based music
composition system. Users declaratively state a music theory and the
computer generates music which complies with this theory. A theory is
formulated as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) by a set of rules
(constraints) applied to a music representation in which some aspects are
expressed by variables (unknowns). Music constraint programming is
style-independent and is well-suited for highly complex theories (e.g. a
fully-fledged theory of harmony). Results can be output into various
formats including MIDI, Lilypond, and Csound.

Changes: This release supports new techniques for constraining the musical
form, and demonstrates them in examples. Also, the definition of complex
distribution strategies (variable orderings in the search) is simplified by
special constructor functions. Several further examples have been added,
and many other extensions and bugfixes have been made.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: TurtolCMS is a powerful, flexible Web content management system.
With it, you can manage every aspect of your Web content directly from your
Web browser with intuitive editing tools. TurtolCMS does not restrict you
with a template, but allows a designer full freedom to build any desired
look and then gracefully re-use that design consistently for any new
content that is added.

Changes: This is the first release since the breakup of Turtol; the
TurtolCMS is now under new management. Changes are focused on making
TurtolCMS a better platform for future development, so there are not many
user-visible changes in this release. The pages/widgets subsystem has been
reworked to be more granular and improve performance, memory footprint, and
flexibility. A lot of IE compatibility work has been merged, though not
tested much. A lot of cruft is gone.

  Tue, Aug 19th 2008 15:34

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XIST is an extensible HTML and XML generator. It is also an XML
parser with a very simple and Python-esque tree API. Every XML element type
corresponds to a Python class, and these Python classes provide a
conversion method to transform the XML tree (e.g. into HTML). XIST can be
considered 'object-oriented XSLT'.

Changes: A cross-platform templating language has been added to XIST with
implementations of compilers and renderers in Python and Java. Actions for
compiling and rendering these templates and actions for gzipping und
unzipping have been added to ll.make. Parameters for make actions can now
be generated by other make actions. TOXIC now supports outputting
procedures for SQL Server. The default XML parser for XIST is now expat and
XIST works even if the C modules are missing, which makes XIST usable on
Google App Engine.

About: xplain2sql converts files from Xplain to SQL. It supports a very
large subset of Xplain, and it can convert from Xplain to Microsoft SQL
Server, DB/2, Inprise InterBase, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL 5, SQLite 3 or
ANSI-92 SQL. It can also generate an XML description of the generated SQL.
This XML description can be used to create low-level middle-tier code.
Example stylesheets for Eiffel/ECLI and Delphi/ADO are included. The C
source code release should compile on any platform with an ANSI C compiler.
There are binary releases for FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris x86, and Windows
2000.

Changes: Much better code generation for the count, min, max, and total
functions using left outer joins instead of sub-selects. A new extension to
mimic SQL's insert into ... select. Extended attributes can now be updated
for most dialects. A variety of bugfixes. Now includes an Ubuntu 8.0.4
