[001] - Amahi Linux Home Server 8.20
by cpg (http://freshmeat.net/users/cpg/)

Information Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: The Amahi Home Server is a Linux Home Server based on Fedora (and
later on Ubuntu). Your machine becomes a "Home Digital Assistant" or HDA
after the installation. Each HDA is a Fedora-based server targeted for home
and home office environments. It provides an iTunes server, calendaring, a
wiki, shared network storage, network backups, a printer server, VPN, and a
plug-in architecture built on Ruby on Rails.
Changes: A small but important feature is included in the platform
software to pave the way for major new features. This allows upgrading the
DB schema easily when needed on upgrades. Also included is a fix to the
default authentication mechanism for Samba. A new share is included for the
default location for Windows or other backups.

[002] - ATLAS 3.9.3 (Development)
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 06:54
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The ATLAS (Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software) project is
an ongoing research effort focusing on applying empirical techniques in
order to provide portable performance. It provides C and Fortran77
interfaces to a portably efficient BLAS implementation, as well as a few
routines from LAPACK.
Changes: A much more extensive testing capability was added. Several
missing symbols were added from a full LAPACK build. *lamch are now
compiled with no optimization. Errors in arch default creation for LAPACK
defaults were fixed. A test in the LAPACK build Makefile was changed to get
around a Solaris shell incompatibility. Architectural defaults were added
for LAPACK QR tuning for AMD64K10h32SSE3, AMD64K10h64SSE3, PPCG564AltiVec,
Core232SSE3, and HAMMER64SSE3.

Desktop Environment :: Screen Savers
About: bluelock.pl is designed to lock a display or terminal once a
Bluetooth device (like a cell phone) is out of range. The script queries
the RSSI (signal strength) of a Bluetooth device. Once the RSSI passes
above a certain threshold a timer is started, and once the timer expires a
locking program is run.

[007] - DarGUI 0.4.0
by Malcolm Poole (http://freshmeat.net/users/pastorescoces/)
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 14:17
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: DarGUI is a graphical frontend for the Disk ARchiving utility (DAR)
that aims to make it easier and quicker to perform common backup tasks
using DAR. It uses the GTK+ library, which is installed on most Linux
distributions, so usually the only additional dependency is DAR. DarGUI
aims to complement and enhance the command line features of DAR rather than
conceal them, and to help users to learn how DAR works so that they can use
it from the command line when necessary. It is written in Pascal using
FreePascal and the Lazarus IDE.
Changes: The "Open Archive" function has been rewritten to give
greatly-improved loading of large archives. Creation of differential
backups is now possible. A timestamp can now be included automatically in
an archive name. Error messages when creating archives have been improved.
A French translation has been added. It is now possible to avoid
automatically loading a filelist after creating a new archive.

[008] - DB Solo 3.5 Beta 2
by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 02:20
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration
About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL
Server. In addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas,
tables, indexes, views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored
procedures, you can view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the
results of queries. You can also graphically view foreign key
relationships.
Changes: This release adds support for disk-based table data comparison,
allowing one to compare tables with millions of rows.

[009] - fwsnort 1.0.5
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 14:25
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to only
those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed through
an existing iptables policy.
Changes: This release replaces the bleeding-all.rules file with the
emerging-all.rules file because Matt Jonkman now releases his rule sets at
emergingthreats.net. Restructured Perl module paths make it easy to
introduce a "nodeps" distribution of fwsnort that does not contain any Perl
modules, allowing better integration with systems that already have all
necessary modules installed (including the IPTables::ChainMgr and
IPTables::Parse modules). This release adds support for multiple Snort rule
directories as a comma-separated list for the argument to --snort-rdir.

[025] - Port Scan Attack Detector 2.1.4
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 14:14
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux iptables
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of the
packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of suspicious
scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting algorithm used by
p0f.
Changes: This release restructures Perl module paths to make it easy to
introduce a "nodeps" distribution of psad that does not contain any Perl
modules. This allows better integration with systems that already have all
necessary modules installed (including the IPTables::ChainMgr and
IPTables::Parse modules). The main driver for this work is to make all
cipherdyne.org projects easily integrated with distributions based on
Debian. A bugfix has been made to honor the IPT_SYSLOG_FILE variable in
--Analyze-msgs mode. A switch has been made from the deprecated
bleeding-all.rules file to the new emerging-all.rules available from
Emerging Threats.

Included builders are SelectBuilder, InsertBuilder, UpdateBuilder, and
DeleteBuilder. It is much lighter weight than any of the ORM tools
available, and is 100% Java. It is a complete re-factoring of code that has
been in production use since 2001 (updated to use features of Java 6). Also
included is a Facade patterned Database object that wraps a Datasource
object. This provides an execution framework for the results of the Builder
objects, which includes simplified transaction and batch management as well
as the ability to transparently handle SQL exceptions in a default manner.
The Database object also provides a simple object-oriented approach via
wrappers around the database metadata.
Changes: Temporal object handling has been refactored with new SQL99
inspired DATE, TIME, and TIMESTAMP classes. There is more Javadoc
documentation and more wiki example code and documentation.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing
About: The XML Construction Kit is a library for generating XML in a
builder pattern. It is only for generating valid XML, not parsing it. There
are dozens if not hundreds of projects for parsing XML. Very few address a
lightweight low/no dependency way of generating XML.
Changes: The Ant build system is working and documented. Some dead code
has been removed. This is the first binary release.
