  by Matteo Franchin (http://freshmeat.net/users/fnch/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 17:51

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Box is a programming language that puts special emphasis on
graphics. It is intended to be for vector graphics what LaTeX is for
writing scientific documents.

Changes: Variables defined in the upper scope unit are globally defined
and are accessible from procedures. $, $$, ... without depth specification
refer now to the current definition Box. If A = B, then A inherits the
procedures of B. The Str object was added. This object allows you to
concatenate strings and print other types to string. It can be safely used
as Str@MyType, since "ordinary strings" (arrays of char) are automatically
converted to Str (Str = (()Char -> STR)). Window.Hot now returns the last
point it received as argument. Exit status should now be treated more
carefully.

[008] - Fusil 1.0 final
  by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 04:28

About: Fusil is a fuzzing program. Currently, it's specific to Linux
command line programs, but the code is designed to be used with any project
type (remote process, fake HTTP server, fuzz network socket, etc.). It is
based on a multi-agent system instead of a monolithic architecture.

Changes: This release adds vlc and zzuf fuzzers, a replay.py script with
many options (e.g. --valgrind), and a --force-unsafe option (like --unsafe
but without the confirmation). It always uses a null device as stdin for
child processes to avoid blocking the fuzzer if the process reads stdin.
The created process identifier is written in the logs.

[009] - GNU ccScript 4.0.1
  by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 18:02

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GNU ccScript offers a class extensible threaded embedded scripting
engine for use with the Common C++ GNU package. This engine is also used in
Bayonne (the GNU telephony server), and in TOSI (FreeBSD and GNU/Linux PBX
integration servers). This engine differs from traditional scripting
systems in that it is used to script near real-time state-event systems
through deterministic callback step execution rather than the linear and
non-deterministic fashion of embedded script libraries such as tcl, and
libguile.

Changes: Templating was introduced into the core ccscript language. This
allows one to rapidly define and apply commands for common event handlers
easily to multiple scripts.

[010] - Google Gadgets for Linux 0.10.2
  by suzhe (http://freshmeat.net/users/suzhe/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 18:43

Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running Google
Gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. It's
compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well
as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. There are two main components to the
application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and
presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user
to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently it has hosts
written for GTK+ and Qt, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to
that of Google Desktop for Windows.

Changes: Lots of bugs have been fixed. Desktop Gadgets compatibility has
been improved a lot. Many gadgets for GDWin can run on GGL now.
framework.system.getFileIcon() has been implemented. framework.openUrl()
now supports opening local files and launching desktop files. The Photos
gadget can handle multiple-level directories now. The ability to adjust the
default font size has been added to the GTK host. Many code cleanups,
refactorings, and optimizations were made.

[011] - JCards 6.0 (Desktop Version)
  by Nick Sydenham (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsydenham/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 17:52

Database
Information Management :: Records Management

About: JCards is a Java application designed to store and manage data in
any format that the user defines. Instead of having multiple
applications/spreadsheets/databases to manage passwords, tasks, shopping
lists, etc., JCards allows the user to define a database that contains the
fields they want. This is accomplished via an easy to use interface that
requires no understanding of SQL or any other database jargon. JCards was
initially developed for PDAs, but has now branched into another version
that is suitable for the modern desktop environment and includes a number
of extra features.

Changes: Major new features and bugfixes were added.

[012] - LCD-Linux 0.13.4
  by Mattia Jona (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjona/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 17:32

System :: Hardware

About: LCD-Linux is a Linux software abstraction layer to drive LCD
alphanumeric displays. It features complete VT102 console emulation and
aims to be as general and flexible as possible. It consists of two kernel
modules, lcd-linux and the display driver. Currently, only the Hitachi
HD44780 is supported, but drivers for other LCD controllers can be easily
written.

Changes: The HD44780 driver has been heavily optimized. The four HD44780
operation modes (4/8 bit with or without busy-flag check) are now
implemented as four totally separate functions. Modes are selected by way
of a pointer-to-function table. This results in an extremely short
execution time, leading to negligible load on fast computers and acceptable
load on very slow processors. Minor bugs have been fixed in the lcd-linux
module. Compatibility with Linux 2.6.26 has been added.

About: Lince is a BitTorrent client that uses libtorrent to handle the
BitTorrent protocol and gtkmm for the interface. It has been designed to be
a light and full-featured client.

Changes: The value of the ratio was fixed. A crash when torrents are
sorted more than once was fixed. A bug that caused a crash when showing a
torrent tab without a creation date was fixed. Support for banning peers
for a period of time was added. The change name dialog in the load torrent

[017] - python-ptrace 0.5
  by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 04:27

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: python-ptrace is a debugger using ptrace written in Python. It's
able to control multiple processes, read/write bytes, perform breakpoint
and step by step execution, use a disassembler, syscall tracer, and parser,

  by Alexey Semenoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/swajj/)
  Sat, Sep 13th 2008 18:18

About: Sdictionary is a dictionary that uses its own dictionary format.
Unlike ptkdic or gtkdic, MySQL isn't needed; you can work with dictionary
files directly. It uses Unicode, meaning that words and articles all are in
UTF-8. There are two index levels, compression, and tools to convert from
text files to .dct and vice versa. A Perl/Tk version, libsdict, a C library
framework, and a Symbian version are available.

Changes: Support for variable short index levels was added. A history API
was implemented. Zlib sources were dropped (dynamic linking with -lz is
done instead). Full support for UTF-8 console and color support were added,
and other changes were made in Sdict CLI. Code cleanup was done.

Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters

About: The Castle is a first-person shooter game in a dark fantasy
setting. Your main weapon is a sword, so the fight is mostly short-range.
Three main levels are included, packed with creatures, items, and sounds. A

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: view3dscene is a browser for VRML (1.0 and 2.0) and X3D, and a
viewer for other 3D model formats (3DS, MD3, Wavefront OBJ, and Collada are
handled). It supports viewing the scene in the "Examine" mode and walking
in the virtual world with features such as collision detection and gravity.
Rendering is done using OpenGL. A built-in ray-tracer allows the generation
of images with more effects (like shadows and mirrors) and conforming
precisely to the VRML 97 lighting specification. The program can also
convert files from 3DS, MD3, and other formats to VRML and pretty-print
VRML files.

Changes: The main new features are X3D support and an events mechanism.
Many new nodes related to events were implemented: four basic sensor nodes,
linear interpolation nodes, and X3D event utilities. The implementation of
existing features was improved to take events into account: binding nodes,
routing events to GLSL shaders, controlling Inline and InlineLoadControl,
and prototypes. MovieTexture is handled, with an extension to load image
sequences with full alpha channel. Recording movies is possible. Other new
features include Extrusion, BlendMode, KambiInline nodes, new X3D
triangles/quads primitives, and HAnim nodes.
