[002] - aiParts 0.9.2
  by Brian Marshall (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmarshal/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 06:30

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: aiParts is a set of C++ classes that can be used to implement
artificial intelligence, subclasses that implement the HighHope technique,
and some sample programs (including "find the shortest path"). A problem
assembled from subclasses of the High-Hope classes knows how to solve
itself by searching for a good solution.

Changes: The files rr_solve.h/cpp were renamed to aipReqRes.h/cpp; classes
declared in these files were renamed. README.txt was improved.

[004] - BashDiff 1.45
  by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 06:33

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells

About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash shell. In the main core, it adds
the following syntax: {a..b}; ${var|...}; then-else-fi to
for/while/until/case statements; try-block with string exception; <&lt+;
and, <<<<. As builtin, it adds the following: sscanf(3), <string.h>,
<ctype.h> wrappers; array, regex(3), stack, queue operations; GDBM, SQLite,
PostgreSQL, MySQL database interfaces; HTML template engine (BASP); Expat
XML parser interface; x-y char plot; DOS, CSV, Awk support; Libwebserver
interface; RPN calculator with <math.h> functions; and, GTK+2 interface for
GUI dialog.

Changes: This release adds a 'pcursor' builtin that provides a simple
stack of positional parameters. It is similar to when shell functions are
called, except here, users "push" and "pop" manually. Shell emulation of
'strtok(3)' is added, which is useful when delimiters are not same for all
tokens. Syntax for the 'strinterval' builtin has been changed to match
'matchinterval' for consistency. Finally, the 'monetra' builtin has been
added for parsing the Montra IP format, which is another card processing
middleware in the Retail/POS market.

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 23:56

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Bazaar is a simple decentralized revision control system.
Decentralized revision control systems give users the ability to branch
remote repositories to a local context. Users can commit to local branches
without requiring special permission from the branches that they branched
from.

Changes: This release includes many bugfixes and a few performance and
feature improvements. "bzr rm" will now scan for missing files and remove
them, like how "bzr add" scans for unknown files and adds them. A bit more
polish has been applied to the stacking code. The b-tree indexing code has
been brought in, with an eye on using it in a future repository format.

About: FreeVikings is a clone of the DOS game Lost Vikings.

Changes: This release contains a new demo level that shows many new
features (a simple 'story-telling' engine and new game objects: a boat,
piranhas, etc.). The amount of required libraries has been reduced. The
menu has been slightly improved, i.e. mouse support has been implemented. A
crash when freeVikings was run with RubyGems present has been fixed. A new
manual for users should be helpful during installation and first playing.

[010] - fwknop 1.9.8
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 16:50

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme called Single Packet
Authorization that requires only a single encrypted packet to communicate
various pieces of information, including desired access through an iptables
or ipfw firewall policy and/or specific commands to execute on the target
system. The main application of this program is to protect services such as
SSH with an additional layer of security in order to make the exploitation
of vulnerabilities much more difficult. The authorization server works by
passively monitoring authorization packets via libpcap. Also supported is a
robust port knocking implementation based around iptables log messages.

Changes: This release adds support for gpg2 and fixes a bug where fwknop
would allow GnuPG to reference an options file (new directives
--gpg-use-options and GPG_USE_OPTIONS were added to override this). The
Windows UI has been updated to fix a bug in the timezone calculation from
the Windows system sending an SPA packet. GnuPG 'hQ' base64 encoded
prefixes are configurable. A bug in the handling of blacklisted IP
addresses has been fixed. The path to gpg or gpg2 is configurable via the
command line or access.conf file (so SOURCE stanzas can reference different
gpg paths).

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 19:07

Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules

About: Gecode/R is a Ruby interface to the Gecode constraint programming
library. Gecode/R is intended for people with no previous experience of
constraint programming, aiming to be easy to pick up and use.

Changes: This is the first release that can be considered stable and ready
for production use. The syntax is expected to remain backwards compatible
from here on out. The documentation changes mostly concern polishing of the
documentation on the Web site.

[012] - GIMP 2.6.0
  by Sven Neumann (http://freshmeat.net/users/BigSven/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 16:04

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based

About: GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely
distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching,
image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint
program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch
processing system, a mass production image renderer, a image format
converter, etc.

Changes: GIMP 2.6 is an important release from a development point of
view. It features changes to the user interface addressing some often
received complaints, and a tentative integration of GEGL, the graph-based
image processing library that will eventually bring high bit-depth and
non-destructive editing to GIMP.

[013] - gnoMint 0.5.4
  by DaveFX (http://freshmeat.net/users/davefx/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 19:18

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Systems Administration

About: gnoMint is a tool for easily creating and managing certification
authorities. It provides fancy visualization of all the pieces of
information that pertain to a CA, such as x509 certificates, CSRs, and
CRLs. gnoMint is currently capable of managing a CA that emits certificates
that are able to authenticate people or machines in VPNs (IPSec or other
protocols), secure HTTP communications with SSL/TLS, authenticate and
cipher HTTP communications through Web-client certificates, and sign or
crypt email messages.

Changes: Now it is possible to generate CRLs for all the CAs in the
hierarchy. Dependencies between certificate uses and certificate purposes.
A lot of autotools cleaning. Certificates (CA and non-CA) can be imported
from external files. A Swedish translation has been added. Expired
certificates appear only in the first CRL released after the expiration
date, according to RFC 5280. Subject and issuer key id are properly set,
according to RFC 5280. Only the first certificate in the database could
sign CSRs in password-protected databases; this has been fixed.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC normalization,
mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional character
handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and XMPP are
included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA are
supported.

Changes: The commandline tool "idn" now accepts -n as a short form of
--nfkc. Compiler warnings have been fixed. Translations and gnulib files
have been updated.

[021] - LambdaRogue 1.2
  by Mario Donick (http://freshmeat.net/users/mariodonick/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 23:57

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: LambdaRogue is a rogue-like role playing game set in a strange
underworld. Men and the species of Drekh'nar once lived peacefully together
on Earth, both not far away from reaching the stars with spaceships. A
misunderstanding led to war before these dreams could be realized. After a
long and bloody battle, a peace treaty was created, forcing mankind to go
underground. Mankind has lost the most of its technological knowledge, but
Ahna, a priestess, is searching for the Book of Stars, which could bring
humans back to the surface and beyond. And you are Ahna's agent.

Changes: Unique and rare items have to be identified, as well as potions
found in the dungeon. There are new monster abilities. The health of
monsters is visible via a health bar (graphical mode) or the color of the
ASCII char (console mode). There are minor graphical improvements.

error patterns, which are defined in an XML file. More powerful error rules
can be written in Java. LanguageTool should be used after the spelling of a
text has been corrected.

Changes: A bug with OpenOffice.org 3.0 integration that could lead to
crashes has been fixed. The LanguageTool button in OpenOffice.org has been
moved to a better place. The error detection rules for French, Swedish, and
Russian have been updated. Note that this release only works with

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 16:44

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: SCIP (Solving Constraint Integer Programs) is a framework for
constraint integer programming oriented towards the needs of mathematical
programming experts who want to have total control of the solution process
and access detailed information down to the guts of the solver. It
integrates techniques from mixed integer programming, constraint
programming, and SAT solving. It can also be used as a pure MIP solver or
as a framework for branch-cut-and-price. In order to use it, you have to
link to an LP solver. It currently supports CLP, CPLEX, Mosek, Soplex, and
XPress-MP.

Changes: New constraint handlers for SOS constraints. Better support for
compilation of projects using SCIP. SCIP can now count integer solutions. A
column generation example for graph coloring has been added. Extended
output capabilities. Support for Pseudo-Boolean problems. New heuristic
DINS. New cutting plane separator MCF. Improved sorting functions. Revised
preprocessing. Reworked timing calls. LP-interfaces adapted to Clp and

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 19:02

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Sshguard monitors services through their logging activity. It
reacts to messages about dangerous activity by blocking the source address
with the local firewall. Sshguard employs a clever parser that can
transparently recognize several logging formats at once (syslog, syslog-ng,
metalog, multilog, raw messages), and detects attacks for many services out
of the box, including SSH, several ftpds, and dovecot. It can operate all
the major firewalling systems, and features support for IPv6, whitelisting,
suspension, and log message authentication.

Changes: This release fixes an autoconf problem. It automatically detects
when ipfw supports IPv6. It is sensitive to ProFTPd messages to the auth
facility, not daemon. sshd patterns for "Bad protocol" and "Did not receive

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 19:08

Internet
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Stunnix JS-Obfus protects your JavaScript code from potential
analyzing/studying/reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the JavaScript/JScript source code. It converts the
JavaScript/JScript source files into highly mangled and obfuscated form,
making it extremely difficult to study, analyse, reuse, and re-work for
competitors or customers, while fully retaining functionality of the
original source code, and then encodes it afterwards, making it completely
unreadable. There are a lot of options to control all aspects of code
hiding, and full support for all syntax constructs. It is designed to be
multi-module aware.

Changes: Greatly improved support for huge input files. Parsing of HTML is
much better. Support for processing JavaScript inside files of custom
structure (code is protected between delimiters defined in external files).

[053] - sysstat 8.1.6
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 19:47

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, mpstat, and
pidstat commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system
activity information. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf command may be used
to display data collected by sar in various formats. The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
pidstat command reports statistics for Linux processes. The mpstat command
reports global and per-processor statistics.

Changes: The option -h has been added to pidstat. This option is used to
display all activities horizontally on a single line. A bug has been fixed
in pidstat: When pidstat was used to monitor a process and all its threads
(with pidstat's option -t), it could display weird values if the thread
group leader terminated. mpstat now displays stats for all interrupts,
including NMI, LOC, etc.

  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 23:56

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Vacuum Magic is a fast-paced action game. The point of the game is
using your magical vacuum field to collect food and defend against
monsters. Food and certain monsters can also be spat out and used as a
projectile against other monsters. Vacuum Magic can be played by up to six
players, either cooperatively or against each other.

Changes: This release introduces two important features that should help
new players get the hang of the game. The Target Practice game mode helps
the player practice their spitting power on bullseye targets that keep
getting harder to hit. There's a "Difficulty Level" setting that can be set
from Easy to Insane. A number of bugs have been fixed, including the
annoying "drop you to the desktop when you eat poison" bug.

[067] - XSD 3.2.0
  by Boris Kolpackov (http://freshmeat.net/users/bosk/)
  Wed, Oct 1st 2008 16:18

Software Development
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: XSD is a W3C XML Schema to C++ translator. Provided with an XML
instance specification (XML Schema), it generates C++ classes that
represent the given vocabulary as well as parsing and serialization code.
You can then access the data stored in XML using types and functions that
semantically correspond to your application domain rather than dealing with
elements, attributes, and text in a direct representation of XML such as
DOM or SAX. XSD features support for in-memory and stream-oriented
processing models, comprehensive XML Schema feature coverage, easy
integration, and more.

Changes: For the in-memory C++/Tree mapping, support for locating object
model nodes with XPath queries has been added, automatic assignment of
namespace prefixes during serialization has been implemented,
polymorphism-aware object model comparison and printing is now supported,
and generation of non-copying constructors has been implemented. For the
event-driven C++/Parser mapping, support for generation of the XML Schema
namespace into a separate header file has been added and the usage of
virtual inheritance has been reduced, which resulted in a much smaller
object code size and faster compilation.
