System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: Window position and size are now remembered.

[010] - DBIx::Perlish 0.45
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 15:29

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: Special handling for the "extract" function was added.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Version Control

About: deltasql is a tool to synchronize databases with source code, which
helps to keep database evolution under control. While developing mid-sized
or big applications, developers make changes to the data model that go
along with changes to the source code. From time to time, branches of
source code are done to stabilize the code that will go to production. A
sort of data model branch is also needed. deltasql provides a simple way to
collect all scripts that change the data model and means to handle data
model branches. The deltasql server runs on Apache and is backed by MySQL.

Changes: The deltasql clients now also support Microsoft SQL server and
Sybase. The schema name was removed, as it was creating confusion. The
possibility to specify another user as root user was added to the install
procedure. The test data script is running correctly now.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: GNUmed is a comprehensive scalable software solution for electronic
medical practices with an emphasis on privacy protection, secure patient
centric record sharing, decision support, and ease of use. It is intended
to become a sophisticated decision support system that will elevate the
quality of medical care that can be delivered.

Changes: This release fixes crashes on Windows on bootstrapping, on trying
to import a document part due to a read-only connection, on failure to set
database language, on DOB "too early" for platform, on very early failure
when instantiating a cStaff object, on catching PyDeadObjectError, an on
auto-setting encounter type for document-import-only encounters. It fixes
failure to remember ignored database language mismatch, and failure to
one-step bootstrap databases when the authentication group was missing. It
has an improved EMR stats display.

About: Kate is a codec for karaoke and text encapsulation for Ogg. Most of
the time, this would be multiplexed with audio/video to carry subtitles,
song lyrics (with or without karaoke data), etc, but it doesn't have to be.
A possible use of a lone Kate stream would be an e-book. Moreover, the
motion feature gives Kate a powerful means to describe arbitrary curves, so
hand drawing of shapes can be achieved. This was originally meant for
karaoke use, but can be used for any purpose. Motions can be attached to
various semantics, like position or color, so scrolling or fading text can
be defined.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is an N-way
messaging server and networking API. It includes client-side networking
APIs for various languages, including C, C++, C#, Delphi, Java, and Python.
MUSCLE lets programs communicate over a network via streams of serialized
Message objects. The included server program ("muscled") lets its clients
message each other and store information in its server-side hierarchical
database. The database supports flexible queries via hierarchical
wildcarding, and "live" updates via a subscription mechanism.

Changes: This version now has the concept of ConstRef objects in addition
to Ref objects (to make it clear that the referenced object really
shouldn't be modified). It has an AsyncDataIO facade class that lets you
transparently run any DataIO object in its own thread, plus various other

[038] - spamdyke 4.0.6
  by Sam Clippinger (http://freshmeat.net/users/samc_silence_org/)
  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 17:14

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: spamdyke is a drop-in filter for qmail to provide connection-time
blacklisting, graylisting, DNS RBL/RHSBL checking, sender MX checking,
improved logging, and more. spamdyke will provide SMTP AUTH and TLS to
unpatched qmail servers. Installing spamdyke does not require patching or
recompiling qmail.

Changes: Keywords for the IP-in-rDNS filter are now correctly terminated
so they can be matched. AUTH advertisements from a patched qmail are now
completely removed when the "smtp-auth-level" option is "always" or
"always-encrypted". The name of the matching RBL/RHSBL is now logged when
multiple RBLs/RHSBLs are used instead of always logging the first one. Slow
remote servers are now handled politely so spamdyke will not consume 100%
CPU. Using the full logging feature with a "log-level" option set to
"excessive" no longer sends log output to the remote server when spamdyke
is used on Plesk servers.

[041] - The Python audio processing suite 0.0.5
  by Manuel Amador (Rudd-O) (http://freshmeat.net/users/ruddo/)
  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 06:35

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: The Python audio processing suite is a module that contains a
variety of convenience functions to process audio signals. It can be used
to plot spectral analyses of a song across time and to quickly ascertain
encoding quality, but the instrumental goal of this suite is to robustly
identify duplicated songs, regardless of which album they were released in,
encoding quality, or start time.

Changes: The code has been reorganized into separate sub-modules. A
streaming model has been implemented that does not require decoding of the
entire file and does not use temporary files. Song analysis performance has
been boosted by 2x with the streaming model.

[042] - TVheadend 2.0

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Video :: Capture

About: Tvheadend is a streaming server/relay supporing a variety of
sources and multiple output formats. It is primarily intended to be used
for receiving TV (DVB, Analog, IPTV) and to transmit it using a number of
different output formats to subscribers. Together with powerful DVR
(Digital Video Recorder) features, an advanced EPG and a web-interface it
can be used as a TV distribution hub.

Changes: A major (if not complete) rewrite. Tvheadend now completely
relies on the Web interface for configuration; no more setting files.
During the rewrite, both analog and IPTV support have been temporarily
removed. The RTSP and XBMSP output streaming support have also been
removed. DVB-T/C/S is currently the only available input source. HTSP (for
playback to HTS Showtime) and the Digital Video Recorder are the only
available output. On the upside, the infrastructure is now multi-threaded
to leverage modern multi-core systems.

[043] - UFRaw 0.14
  by Udi Fuchs (http://freshmeat.net/users/udifuchs/)
  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 06:37

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: UFRaw is a utility for converting and manipulating raw images from
digital cameras. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a Gimp plugin,
and images can be batch processed using the commandline interface. UFRaw
reads most existing raw formats using Dave Coffin's raw conversion utility
DCRaw, and it supports basic color management using Little CMS, allowing
the user to apply color profiles. For Nikon users, UFRaw has the advantage
that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon,
you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images.

Changes: 33 new cameras are supported thanks to dcraw, and there are 7 new
translations. Some of the controls in the user interface were shuffled,
getting rid of the "Save As" pop-up dialog. Hopefully, the new interface
will streamline your workflow.

  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 06:33

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: view3dscene is a browser for VRML (1.0 and 2.0) and X3D, and a
viewer for other 3D model formats (3DS, MD3, Wavefront OBJ, and Collada are
handled). It supports viewing the scene in the "Examine" mode and walking
in the virtual world with features such as collision detection and gravity.
Rendering is done using OpenGL. A built-in ray-tracer allows the generation
of images with more effects (like shadows and mirrors) and conforming
precisely to the VRML 97 lighting specification. The program can also
convert files from 3DS, MD3, and other formats to VRML and pretty-print
VRML files.

Changes: Scripting (in the KambiScript language) is implemented. Animating
a camera by animating the Viewpoint position works. To improve navigation
in scripted worlds, navigation type = "NONE" and speed = "0" are supported.
Quaternions are used for EXAMINE navigation, which gives much more natural
rotations when dragging with a mouse.

  Thu, Oct 16th 2008 15:51

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system. It is simple to implement and maintain,
allows users to be validated automatically, requires no hardware tokens,
has a simple API for application support (via Ruby, PHP, Java, COM, Python,
etc.), supports multiple domains, and supports replication for fault
tolerance and scalability. It also supports mutual /host and transaction
authentication.

Changes: This token client works with the locked domains. The token client
is associated with the PC through its CPU or MAC address. During token
registration and passcode requests, the locked token requires the use of a
virtual keypad presented in the dialog. This protects against keystroke
loggers. On a 3.1 server, you can now check the box to "Require Locked
Tokens" for the domain.
