[001] - Absolute OS 12.1.12
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 06:26
About: Absolute Linux is a lightweight Slackware derivative that uses an
Icewm, pcmanfm, ROX-Filer, ivman, and others to create a lightweight yet
easy to use distribution. Installation is text-based but simplified, and
all packages are installed at once. It can run on a Pentium MMX with 64MB
of RAM (PII 400 with 128MB recommended). It features ease of browsing any
connected device in pcmanfm and an auto-popup menu for inserted playable
media. "Restricted" codecs are available to those eligible via a root-user
installer. Along with CD2 there is a large range of software compiled on
and for Absolute, including OpenOffice, Mplayer, GIMP, and K3B.
Changes: This release has full UTF-8 support. Wicd (a wired and wireless
networking interface) was upgraded to 1.5.4. HPLIP (HP printer tools) are
working and gksu was added. The glib and gtk libraries were all recompiled.
Firefox is once again built from source using xulrunner, which is included.

[005] - BashDiff 1.46
by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 04:01
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells
About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash shell. In the main core, it adds
the following syntax: {a..b}; ${var|...}; then-else-fi to
for/while/until/case statements; try-block with string exception; <<+;
and, <<<<. As builtin, it adds the following: sscanf(3), <string.h>,
<ctype.h> wrappers; array, regex(3), stack, queue operations; GDBM, SQLite,
PostgreSQL, MySQL database interfaces; HTML template engine (BASP); Expat
XML parser interface; x-y char plot; DOS, CSV, Awk support; Libwebserver
interface; RPN calculator with <math.h> functions; and, GTK+2 interface for
GUI dialog.
Changes: When processing an embedded shell script using BASP (bash server
pages) builtin commands, template segments were not fflush()'ed in the
correct order. This bug was fixed long ago, and forgotten until now.

[006] - Cairo 1.8.2
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 18:11
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cairo is a vector graphics library with cross-device output
support. It currently supports the X Window System and in-memory image
buffers as output targets. It is designed to produce identical output on
all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration
when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). It provides a
stateful user-level API with capabilities similar to the PDF 1.4 imaging
model and provides operations including stroking and filling Bezier cubic
splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased
text rendering.
Changes: It is now possible to build Cairo without any font backend, which
is most useful when the application provides custom font rendering through
the user-font API. A failsafe fallback font is provided, though. Several
compilation speed-ups and optimizations were made. Many bugs were fixed.

Software Development :: Bug Tracking
About: Codestriker is a Web application that supports online code reviews.
Traditional document reviews are supported, as well as reviewing diffs
generated by an SCM (Source Code Management) system and plain unidiff
patches. There are integration points with CVS, Subversion, Clearcase,
Perforce, Visual SourceSafe, and Bugzilla. There is a plug-in architecture
for supporting other SCMs and issue tracking systems. It minimizes paper
work, ensures that issues, comments, and decisions are recorded in a
database, and provides a comfortable workspace for actually performing code
inspections. An optional highly-configurable metrics subsystem allows you
to record code inspection metrics as a part of your process.
Changes: Optional user authentication/authorization. A new Subversion
post-commit script based on standard commit-email.pl to auto-create code
reviews. A fix for a bug where Subversion diffs with binary files that
contained property changes were not handled correctly. Scmbug integration
now works correctly for multiple commits to the same file under the one Bug
ID, and when there are deleted files present. A "Diff" link has been added
for each comment on the list comments page. The rendering of non-Latin
characters when syntax highlighting is enabled has been fixed.

Fri, Oct 31st 2008 18:24
System :: Hardware
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: The NET-SNMP (formerly UCD-SNMP) package contains various tools
relating to the Simple Network Management Protocol including an extensible
agent, an SNMP library, tools to request or set information from SNMP
agents, tools to generate and handle SNMP traps, a version of the unix
'netstat' command using SNMP and a Tk/perl mib browser. It was originally
based on the Carnegie Mellon University SNMP implementation (version
2.1.2.1), but has been greatly enhanced, ported and fixed and barely
resembles the original package anymore.
Changes: A bug (CVE-2008-4309) in the getbulk handling within the agent
code could let anyone with even minimal access crash the agent. This has
been fixed.

[031] - Parallel BZIP2 1.0.3
by Jeff Gilchrist (http://freshmeat.net/users/Jeff_Gilchrist/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 20:37
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block-sorting file
compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on SMP
machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2 1.0.2
or newer (ie: anything compressed with PBZIP2 can be decompressed with
bzip2).
Changes: The ability to compress, decompress, and test data using stdin
and pipes is now supported. Support was also added to directly decompress
files without using threads when files are small, the system only has 1
CPU, or if the .bz2 file contains 1 bzip2 stream. This version can now
compress 0 byte files like bzip2. Support for pbzcat symlink to
automatically specify a decompression mode to stdout, just like bzcat, is
now included.

About: Proxymini is a proxy server that fully supports HTTP, HTTP CONNECT
(for HTTPS and so on), SOCKS4 (TCP and TCP bind), and SOCKS5 (TCP, TCP
bind, and UDP). It's designed to be small, and for being used in trusted
environments where there is no need for complex or advanced options.
Double-click on it and it will work immediately. It supports some options
like the binding of a specific interface for incoming or outgoing
connections, a custom port to bind (the default is 8123), and stdout and
file verbose logging.

[033] - safe-rm 0.4
by Francois Marier (http://freshmeat.net/users/fmarier/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 23:36
Utilities
About: safe-rm is intended to prevent the accidental deletion of important
files by replacing /bin/rm with a wrapper which checks the given arguments
against a configurable blacklist of files and directories that should never
be removed. Users who attempt to delete one of these protected files or
directories will not be able to do so and will be shown a warning message
instead. Protected paths can be set both at the site and user levels.
Changes: The main change in this release is a fix for a bug that was
preventing the root directory from being added to the list of protected
paths. Safe-rm is now able to protect you from the infamous "rm -rf /".

[034] - Steel Bank Common Lisp 1.0.22
by Brian Mastenbrook (http://freshmeat.net/users/darmokcl/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 18:07
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common
Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection,
lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental
compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and
all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket
support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are
all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which
feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native
compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C compiler
and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes: SAVE-LISP-AND-DIE can now save current values of
--dynamic-space-size and --control-stack-size in the executable core,
causing it to skip normal runtime option processing. This allows saved
executables to fully customize their own commandline processing. A new
commandline argument --script has been added, which supports shebang lines.

collaborate on compound documents that contain embedded data from various
sources. Content is viewed as an integrated whole that is intuitively
transparent to authors.
Changes: This version features a number of enhancements, including the
fresh look and feel of Serna, enhanced Print Draft that lets you save
documents to PDF format, DITA ID management, improved font rendering and
document visualization on Mac OS, SSL protocol support, and ActiveX

[040] - wumwum 0.1
by wagner frederic (http://freshmeat.net/users/wagnerf/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 23:35
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: wumwum is a window manager manager. The idea behind wumwum is to
turn any EWMH-compliant window manager into a tiling manager a la "ion"
or "awesome". wumwum works by using wmctrl, and adapts itself dynamically
to the active window manager. All functionality from the underlying window
manager is kept when under wumwum making it ideal for beginners.
Changes: wumwum is operational under blackbox, fluxbox, openbox, kwin, and
window maker. Other untested window managers may also be working.

[041] - XHTML indent 0.02.00
by James Hook (http://freshmeat.net/users/nzhook/)
Fri, Oct 31st 2008 18:04
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: XHTML indent takes an XHTML file via standard input and outputs an
indented version of the XML. It also adds comments to the end of closing
tags so that you can quickly pick up on the opening tag without having to
jump to the appropriate line. This does not convert bad code like HTML tidy
does. It works with any XML formatted file, but has features designed for
XHTML developers. This program works well as both a standalone tool or an
external filter for a text editor.
Changes: This release supports non-closing HTML 4 tags such as IMG, BR,
and INPUT. It checks that the closing tag is for the open tag of the same
indent level. The contents of SCRIPT and STYLE tags are now ignored. The
comment at the end of a tag can now be disabled.
