Communications :: Telephony
About: A lightweight, Web-based, multi-language configuration tool for
Asterisks SIP devices and carriers.
Changes: The carrier can now be just a "register" declaration (for
example, for DIDs / inbound). "extensions" and "extensions templates" are
now sorted by name.

by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 08:01
Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: High-resolution OpenGL tiled rendering was implemented. Support
for vertex-dependent surface colors was added. Rendering artifacts in
planar surfaces and thick lines were fixed. A Gradient palette that varies
linearly over a specified range of pens was added. An improved surface
constructor for convex three-dimensional paths was added. An optional
filltype argument was added to HookHead2 and the new DefaultHead2
arrowhead. A roundbox envelope routine was added. A bug in xasy and an
incorrect precontrol bug in write(path) were fixed. Compilation with
standard glut is now supported.

[004] - Brain Workshop 4.2
by radix (http://freshmeat.net/users/radix42/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 00:40
Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Games/Entertainment
About: Brain Workshop is an implementation of the Dual N-Back mental
exercise. This exercise is a mental activity that has been scientifically
shown to improve your working memory (short-term memory) and fluid
intelligence. The game involves remembering a sequence of spoken letters
and a sequence of positions of a square at the same time. Brain Workshop
includes additional challenging game modes beyond Dual N-Back.
Changes: This release adds single n-back modes for younger children and
those who may find dual n-back too challenging. It also adds a new
challenge mode, Dual Variable N-Back. The configuration file is no longer
included in the distribution, so your old settings won't get overwritten.
OpenAL is now the default sound driver on Linux. (Try installing package
python-openal if you're having sound problems.) The pyglet library no
longer needs to be installed separately.

[006] - clive 2.0beta3 (Development)
by legatvs (http://freshmeat.net/users/legatvs/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 00:10
Multimedia :: Video
About: clive is a command line utility for extracting videos from Youtube
and other video sharing Web sites. It was originally written to bypass the
Adobe Flash requirement needed to view the hosted videos. It is
non-interactive, meaning it can work in the background while the user is
not logged on. This allows the user to start an extraction and disconnect
from the system, letting clive finish the work.
Changes: This release adds a few new features, brings back some of the 1.x
options, and fixes a set of bugs.

[007] - Dapper Dataflow Engine 0.94
by Roy Liu (http://freshmeat.net/users/royliu/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 00:04
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Dapper, or "Distributed and Parallel Program Execution Runtime", is
a tool for taming the complexities of developing for large-scale cloud and
grid computing, enabling the user to create distributed computations from
the essentials: the code that will execute, along with a dataflow graph
description. It supports rich execution semantics, carefree deployment, a
robust control protocol, modification of the dataflow graph at runtime, and
an intuitive user interface.
Changes: Command line options for the client and server are now available,
courtesy of the Apache Commons CLI library. The client process lifecycle is
now defined as ending when a disconnect from the server happens. Stem
generation functionality has moved from being a member method of
OutputHandleResource to being a static method of CodeletUtilities. The
FlowNodeFactory class is used in favor of direct instantiation of
FlowNodes. Building of native components has migrated to the CMake. Logging
has migrated to SLF4J. A README has been added to all distributions.

by karora (http://freshmeat.net/users/karora/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 08:00
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: DAViCal (previously called the Really Simple CalDAV Store) is a
server implementation of the CalDAV protocol for storing calendaring
resources (in iCalendar format) on a remote shared server. An increasing
number of calendar clients support the maintenance of shared remote
calendars through CalDAV including Mozilla Calendar (Sunbird/Lightning),
Evolution, Mulberry, Chandler, and Apple's iCal. DAViCal supports basic
delegation of read/write access among calendar users, multiple users or
clients reading and writing the same calendar entries over time, and
scheduling of meetings with free/busy time displayed.
Changes: This release adds initial support for the draft scheduling
extensions to CalDAV, support for the draft calendar-user-principal
extension, various bugfixes, and several new configuration options.
Significant code refactoring has also happened, which is ongoing. The
French translation has been reviewed and updated.

Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 00:47
Security
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: eurephia is an authentication plug-in for OpenVPN. The plug-in
enhances OpenVPN authentication by introducing user name and password
authentication in addition to SSL certificates. In addition, eurephia will
blacklist IP addresses, user accounts, and/or certificates if too many
failed attempts are registered. On the Linux platform, iptables support is
also included, which can be used to restrict each user's network access
through the VPN channel. For the moment, eurephia depends on a patched
OpenVPN server to provide a secure user name and certificate mapping.
Changes: This release contains two bugfixes, giving correct behavior when
blacklisting user certificates and proper shutdown. A new feature was
added, which gives the possibility to blacklist IP addresses also via the
firewall interface.

toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing and search
facilities to their own applications. It supports the Probabilistic
Information Retrieval model as well as a rich set of boolean query
operators. It's fast and scalable to hundreds of millions of documents.
Changes: This release adds wrappers for the following functions in the
Xapian namespace: get_major_version(), get_minor_version(), get_revision(),
sortable_serialise(), and sortable_unserialise(). Makefile.PL now rejects
xapian-core versions earlier than 1.0 with an error rather than just a
warning.

[029] - Shared Scientific Toolbox in Java 1.04
by Roy Liu (http://freshmeat.net/users/royliu/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 00:03
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
System :: Networking
About: Shared Scientific Toolbox in Java is a library of quality
lightweight components for scientific/distributed computing that includes
the first true multidimensional array package in Java, a parallel data flow
engine, an asynchronous sockets layer, an annotation-driven class loader,
and more.
Changes: Logging has migrated to SLF4J. The build process for native
libraries has migrated to CMake for build system generation. Additional
backports of popular methods exclusive to the Java 1.6 foundation classes
have been added. Subtle class loader memory leaks have been fixed. Source
distributions have been consolidated into a single distribution featuring
Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, and Windows 32-bit builds. Windows builds of
native libraries have been fixed to conform for JNIEXPORT, JNIIMPORT, and
JNICALL conventions. A README file has been added to all distributions.

[030] - Smitten 1.1
by Steven Goodwin (http://freshmeat.net/users/steevatbluedust/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 02:31
Home Automation
Multimedia
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: Smitten differs from traditional media centres in three major ways.
It contains no media playback at all, which makes it very small (and
suitable for porting to embedded systems) and quick to initialize. It
targets a TV display and interface, which means there's less information on
any particular screen, and a much simpler control interface consisting of
left, right, up, down, and select. No mouse is required. It is also highly
skinnable, and cross-platform to most systems. Essentially, it provides an
easy-to-use menu system that allows the user to navigate a hierarchy of
files, and view them using an (external) tool.

[032] - Socat 2.0.0-b2 (Beta)
by Gerhard Rieger (http://freshmeat.net/users/rieger/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 02:32
Utilities
About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file, pipe,
device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP, TCP),
SSL, a client for SOCKS4, or proxy CONNECT. It supports broadcasts and
multicasts, abstract Unix sockets, Linux tun/tap, GNU readline, and PTYs.
It provides forking, logging, and dumping and different modes for
interprocess communication. Many options are available for tuning socat and
its channels. Socat can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot or
daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix
sockets, as an IP6 relay, or for redirecting TCP-oriented programs to a
serial line.
Changes: The main enhancements are so-called address chains that
concatenate simple addresses. Address chains are similar to command shell
pipes, but work bidirectionally.

Software Development :: Version Control
Software Development :: Version Control :: Subversion
About: Userfriendly SVN (USVN) is a Web-based interface to configure your
subversion repositories. This interface allows you to create new projects
without a command line client, and it requires priviliged access to the
server. USVN will take care of managing the list of users which are
authorized to check out source code. This allows you to delegate the
administration of your Subversion depots. USVN permits easy management of
access restriction on Subversion files.
Changes: This version fixes blocking bugs reported by users and adds minor
improvements. Project creation with Subversion 1.5 was fixed. A bug in
which all members would be gone after modifying a group was fixed.
Subversion URLs are now clickable. Files can be downloaded from the file
browser. New translations were made for Indonesian and Dutch.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architected personal publishing
system. While primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, WordPress
is also a flexible CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In
addition to the basic blog functions, it also has an integrated link
manager (e.g. for blogrolls), file attachments, XFN support, support for
stand-alone pages, Atom and RSS feeds for both content and comments,
blogging API support (Atom Publishing Protocol, Blogger, MetaWeblog, and
Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced cruft-free URL
generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin API.
Changes: WordPress 2.7 has a newly redesigned administrative interface,
the result of much user feedback and testing. New features include a
built-in WP core upgrade function, plugin directory browser/installer, the
ability for child themes to override individual template files, sticky
posts, improved comment management, and much more.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Xapian is a search engine library, scalable to collections
containing hundreds of millions of documents. It's written in C++ with
bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. It is a highly
adaptable toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also a rich set of boolean
query operators. Omega is a Web search application built upon the Xapian
library. It can index a Web server's document tree (including HTML, PDF,
OpenOffice, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Works, WordPerfect, RTF, PS, etc.), or
data exported from arbitrary sources (e.g. SQL databases).
Changes: Spelling correction is now even faster. (A 15% speed up was
measured.) Two bugs caused by excess precision on x86 Linux have been
fixed. Query::MatchAll now gives equal weights to all documents. A crash
while compacting the spelling table has been fixed. The copydatabase
example now copies user metadata too. The omega CGI binary now catches and
reports std::exception.

[044] - Xenomai 2.4.5
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 03:24
System :: Emulators
About: Xenomai is a realtime development framework cooperating with the
Linux kernel in order to provide pervasive, interface-agnostic, hard
realtime support to userspace applications, seamlessly integrated into the
GNU/Linux environment. Xenomai is based on an abstract RTOS core, usable
for building any kind of realtime interface, over a nucleus which exports a
set of generic RTOS services. Any number of RTOS personalities called
"skins" can then be built over the nucleus, providing their own specific
interface to the applications by using the services of a single generic
core to implement it.
Changes: Linux kernel support has been upgraded to kernel 2.6.26. Support
has been added for the MPC836x. There are numerous bugfixes.

About: X Persistent Remote Applications (xpra) is "screen for X". It lets
you run applications remotely (like ordinary X or VNC), but unlike ordinary
X, these applications are "persistent" if you lose your connection, or even
if you want to switch to another computer. Also unlike VNC, they are
ordinary applications on your desktop managed by your window manager, not
trapped in a box.
Changes: This release contains several minor feature improvements (for
instance, mouse scroll wheels are now supported), but the main change is a
large number of bugfixes. Most importantly, keyboard input to Qt apps now
works, and robustness in general is greatly improved.
