Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Problems with surface normals that led to incorrect lighting were
fixed. By default, the mean(pen[]) routine now returns an interpolated pen
with the minimum opacity of all given pens. A patch reverse(patch) function
was added. The settings.keep flag is now handled correctly in texpath and
strokepath. A cornermean function for surfaces was added. Several examples
that illustrate patch and vertex shading were updated.

  by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/danleweb/)
  Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 16:35

System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: If there is already a GUI instance running, it is raised rather
than starting a new instance. A Spanish translation was added.

  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 21:30

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries. An
example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time via
bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support for
loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing those
fields at run time. This library was initially created to support reading
various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it has also
been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.

Changes: A few minor changes and a few code cleanups, but mostly a stable
pre-0.5 release.

About: The bitgtkmm library contains a set of gtkmm widgets supporting
data structures in the bit library. These widgets include BufferTable and
BufferList, which will automatically lay out a data structure visually.

Changes: This is the first release that folds bitgtkmm back into the bit
library as bit-gtkmm. This now officially deprecates the bitgtkmm library,
with all widgets to be found in bit-gtkmm.

About: Clam AntiVirus is an anti-virus toolkit designed especially for
email scanning on mail gateways. It provides a number of utilities,
including a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon, a commandline
scanner, and a tool for automatic database updates. The core of the package
is an anti-virus engine available as a shared library.

Changes: This release fixes some issues found in previous releases and
includes one new feature, "Malware Statistics Gathering." This is an
optional feature that allows users to optionally submit statistics about
what they detect in the field. These data are then used to determine what
types of malware are the most detected in the field, and in what geographic
area. It also allows publishing of summary data on clamav.net, where users
can monitor the latest threats.

[014] - Crossroads Load Balancer 2.30
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 16:47

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is a daemon running in user space, and features
extensive configurability, polling of back ends using wake up calls, status
reporting, many algorithms to select the 'right' back end for a request
(and user-defined algorithms for very special cases), and much more.
Crossroads is service-independent: it is usable for any TCP service, such
as HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, and database connections. In the case of HTTP
balancing, Crossroads can provide session stickiness for back end processes
that need sessions, but aren't session-aware of other back ends. Crossroads
can be run as a stand-alone daemon or via inetd.

Changes: This is a stable release. New features include DOS protection
capabilities, bugfixes, a "weighted-load" dispatching mode, a richer
management Web interface, and a rewritten, optimized HTTP dispatcher which
runs 40-50% faster.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to

  Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 18:52

Multimedia
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Disko is a plugin-based framework providing components to create
media-oriented applications with special user interfaces on embedded
platforms. It is closely connected to the DirectFB hardware abstraction
library and specialized in touchscreen and remote control navigation.
There's a plugin-based management component which enables easy development,
customization, and extension of embedded applications. Disko has been
ported to the TI Davinci platform together with DirectFB, and runs on x86,
as well. The goal is to have Disko up and running on every single platform
DirectFB is working on.

Changes: This release has a very basic improvement referring to the
performance with the conversion to the TAFF file format. The effect of this
conversion is that all pics and XML files are parsed only once, which will
save a lot of startup time. In addition, this release has integrated basic
flash support based on swfdec 0.8, supports the MySQL interface, and has a
basic implementation of a SIP client interface. There are bugfixes and
performance optimizations.

About: Movable Type is a powerful, multi-user blogging platform. It's
widely used as a business blogging tool thanks to the ease with which you
can create multiple blog sites. It has a large community and many add-ons
available. It's written in Perl and tends to be a bit difficult to install,
unless of course you use the JumpBox. This JumpBox provides a basic
installation of Movable Type setup with a single blog on the root URL of
the system. It's highly recommended that you keep that blog and customize
it for your needs rather than starting from scratch. From there, you can
add other blogs fairly easily. This JumpBox is based on the 1.1 JumpBox
Platform and includes a backup system that supports archiving the state of
the JumpBox to NFS, Windows file shares, and Amazon S3.

Changes: This release no longer requires registration.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: MidCOM, the Midgard Components Framework, is an MVC framework for
the Midgard persistent storage platform. It provides mechanisms for
building a Web site using components without much need for writing code to
glue all this together. The administration site gets built automatically by
using those components. Goodies like a caching engine and sub-requests make
site building even easier.

Changes: SQL queries generated by MidCOM's DBA layer have been optimized.
Midgard now sets up a standalone Asgard administrative interface for all
new site setups. MidCOM has a new handler for catching PHP exceptions.
MidCOM DBA is bypassed for configuration and element loading. Midgard
Collector is now able to query metadata properties. MultiLang support has
been improved with index articles and attachments. The Datagard upgrade
from 1.8 now installs the same MidCOM packages to Ragnaroek. Swedish
translations are included.

  Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 21:59

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video

About: pHash is an implementation of various perceptual hashing
algorithms. A perceptual hash is a fingerprint of an audio, video, or
image file that is mathematically based on the audio or visual content
contained within. Unlike usual hash functions that rely on the avalanche
effect of small changes in input leading to drastic changes in the output,
perceptual hashes are "close" to one another if the inputs are visually or
auditorily similar. As a result, perceptual hashes must also be robust
enough to take into account transformations that could have been performed
on the input.

support for images, tweaks the DCT/pixel tube algorithm for images, and
includes preliminary support for videos. There are numerous bugfixes.

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements and
operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: A new gzip.s7i library, which contains a gzip uncompression
function, was added. The functions getXmlTagHeadOrContent,
getSymbolInXmlTag, getHtmlAttributeValue, and getNextXmlAttribute were
added to the scanfile.s7i library. In the library scanstri.s7i, the
function getXmlTagHeadOrContent was added and the function
getSymbolInHtmlTag was renamed to getSymbolInXmlTag. The interpreter's
stack trace, when an uncaught exception occurs, was improved. The handling
of sockets in the compiler was improved to support them for the cl (MSVC) C
compiler. The documentation file src/read_me.txt was improved.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Embedded Systems

About: Wt is a C++ library for developing Web applications with an API
that is widget-centric and inspired by existing C++ graphical user
interface APIs. To the developer, it offers complete abstraction of any
Web-specific implementation details. Under the hood, the library uses the
latest techniques (AJAX) to handle user events and update the Web page.

Changes: New features include a new WAbstractItemModel interface that
supports hierarchical models, a new widget, WTreeView, that implements a
high performance MVC-based tree (table) view, and a widgetgallery example
that demonstrates most of the widgets and features in Wt. Other
improvements include support for submenus in WMenu, improved communication
of events, standard prevention for CSRF also when using cookies for URL
tracking, and an API for dynamic stylesheet rules.

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Xataface is a flexible and shapable skin that sits on top of MySQL,
making it accessible to every-day users. It automatically generates the
appropriate forms, lists, and menus for a user to interact with the
database without having to know any SQL. It is a full-featured Web
application framework, and gives developers the flexibility to customize
the features and behavior of their application via configuration files
(using the simple INI-file syntax), templates, and plug-ins. A generic
application with no customizations is completely functional, but the
developer is free to customize things at his leisure.

Changes: Bug #391, which caused select lists to sometimes use the wrong
IDs from value lists, has been fixed. This bug affected versions 1.0.4,
1.0.5, and 1.0.6. Anybody using these versions should upgrade immediately
or apply the patch.

has a simple configuration, makes heavy use of CGI (and other CPAN
modules), generates valid XHTML, and has support for Unicode and multiple
languages.
