[004] - Back In Time 0.8
  by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/danleweb/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 09:45

System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: Backup files (*~) are not shown. Backup files were added to the
default exclude patterns. A single package with all languages included was
made. An English manual was added (man and docbook). The application can be
started with a "path" to a folder or file as a command line parameter. When
the application starts, if it is already running, its command line is
passed to the first instance, which allow basic integration with file
managers. When the application is started a second time, it would raise the
first application's window but it was not always focused. This has been
fixed.

[005] - Bazaar VCS 1.9
  by Martin Pool (http://freshmeat.net/users/bootswork/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 08:09

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Bazaar is a simple decentralized revision control system.
Decentralized revision control systems give users the ability to branch
remote repositories to a local context. Users can commit to local branches
without requiring special permission from the branches that they branched
from.

Changes: This release of Bazaar adds a new repository format, "1.9", with
smaller and more efficient index files. This format can be specified when
creating a new repository, or used to losslessly upgrade an existing
repository. bzr 1.9 also speeds most operations over the smart server
protocol, makes annotate faster, and uses less memory when making checkouts
or pulling large amounts of data.

About: The purpose of the glideinWMS is to provide a simple way to access
the Grid resources. To achieve this without reinventing the wheel,
glideinWMS is a Glidein-based WMS (Workload Management System) that works
on top of Condor. Once setup, final users can submit regular Condor jobs to
the local queue and the glidein factory will provide the computing
resources behind the scenes. From the final user point of view, the Condor
pool just magically grows and shrinks as needed.

[016] - Google Gadgets for Linux 0.10.3
  by suzhe (http://freshmeat.net/users/suzhe/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 18:35

Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running Google
Gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. It's
compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well
as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. There are two main components to the
application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and
presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user
to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently it has hosts
written for GTK+ and Qt, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to
that of Google Desktop for Windows.

Changes: This release has major bugfixes and feature enhancements. Most
features introduced in Google Desktop 5.8 are supported. cmake build
scripts are included in the source package. All users are encouraged to
upgrade.

  by ThomasM (http://freshmeat.net/users/ThomasMueller/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 18:27

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: H2 is an SQL database engine written in Java that implements the
JDBC API. Embedded, server, and clustering modes are available. A browser
based console application is included. The database has strong security
features. Disk based and in-memory databases and tables are supported.

Changes: Improved PostgreSQL compatibility for the functions NEXTVAL and
CURRVAL. Aliases for built-in data types can now be re-mapped. Less heap
memory is needed when multiple databases are open. Date values that match
the daylight saving time end were not allowed in time zones where the
daylight saving time ends at midnight for years larger than 2037. This is a
bug in java.util.Date, but a workaround is implemented in H2 that solves
most problems. Referential integrity for in-memory databases didn't work in
some cases.

  by Erik Ljungström (http://freshmeat.net/users/insajt/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 22:09

Database
System :: Monitoring

About: mylbhelper helps dumb load balancers do their job. It monitors a
local MySQL instance by periodically issuing a query. Should the query
fail, a custom script, which typically would firewall off the load
balancer, is executed. Likewise, when it comes back up, another script is
executed. This means you can use any load balancer capable of distributing
TCP traffic rather than one natively capable of talking MySQL. mylbhelper
can also act solely as a monitoring daemon.

Changes: A lot of changes have been made. Most notably, the project has
moved to using autoconf, so the installation process is now unified across
operating systems. Interval can now take a decimal number. Several new
configuration options has been added. Host and port are changeable. Syslog
output can be shunned. Return code checking for script calls and extended
variable checking have been added.

[027] - phpW2ML 0.5
  by Marc Mongenet (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmo/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 05:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: PhpW2ML is a W2ML (Web 2 Markup Language) processor written in PHP
5. W2ML extends XHTML with markup for context-sensitive, WYSIWYG, online
editing of Web pages. The phpW2ML processor is distributed with a
JavaScript editor, and with W2ML files demonstrating W2ML applications.

Changes: To avoid conflicts, W2ML files are locked during processing. More
XML errors are fatal, notably undeclared namespaces and entities, and
libxml2 messages are now logged. The HTTP HEAD method is now supported.
Support for markup access control based on request parameters has been
added (a W2ML attribute with req, internal, match, and nmatch attributes).
New internal variables for request variables have been added. Visitors are
now logged as default W2ML users, but markup users and groups are not yet
implemented.

  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 15:10

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions

About: Pixane is an image processing library for Tcl that allows the
scripting of all kind of image transformations. It supports reading from
and writing to a large set of file formats (JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WBMP, etc)
and provides anti-aliased text rendering and a set of built-in fonts. It
doesn't requires Tk, so it can be used to easily generate images
dynamically from CGI. Binaries are provided for many platforms as dynamic
libraries with no external dependencies for easy deployment. It is also a
core component of the eTcl distribution.

Changes: This release adds support for anti-aliased lines, a faster and
more accurate image subsampling algorithm. Rotation and anchor options for
text rendering have been made more consistent with the global API.
Performance has improved, and minor bugs have been fixed. Binaries are
provided for MacOS X, Win32, Windows Mobile, and Linux (arm, arm-eabi,
mipsel, powerpc, x86, and now also x86_64).

[030] - RapidXml 1.12
  by kaalus (http://freshmeat.net/users/kaalus/)
  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 05:05

About: RapidXml is an attempt to create the fastest XML DOM parser
possible, while retaining useability, portability, and reasonable W3C
compatibility. It is an in-situ parser written in C++, with parsing speed
approaching that of strlen() function executed on the same data. The entire
parser is contained in a single header file, so no building or
configuration is necessary. It has no dependencies other than a very small
subset of standard C++ library, which can be easily emulated manually if
use of standard library is not desired.

Changes: This release contains many bugfixes for the XML printer. The
manual was improved and extended, with additional sections describing how
to use the printing functions. Also, the test harness was updated with a
new makefile-based build system. Some bugs in tests were fixed to ensure
that no bogus failures are produced under Linux.

  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 12:44

Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Talend Open Profiler (TOP) helps you to profile your data. TOP's
ergonomic interface allows you to define metrics (indicators) and collect
statistics on your data in a few clicks. It comes with a set of regular
expressions that helps you to identify bad data. You can create your own
regular expressions and use them in data profiling analyses. A lot of
options exist for each indicator, which change the behavior of the
indicator so that it gives you more pertinent information. Data quality
options on indicators alert you when your data quality is not what you
expected.

Changes: The program can now connect to DB2 databases. Connection analysis
of Oracle displays results. Many indicators are executed on MS SQL.
Aggregation of dates by week works in the frequency table. Some syntax
errors for PostgreSQL were fixed. Tables can be previewed on MS SQL.

  Fri, Nov 7th 2008 08:06

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Tanal is a Unix daemon that captures traffic packet size, source,
destination, and times and saves this data into a native PostgreSQL or ODBC
database in near real time, from which traffic reports may be made. It does
not save the actual data or headers. It works on ethX or cooked devices
like ppp0. It uses PostgreSQL embedded SQL or libodbc++ to insert the data,
the pcap library to capture traffic, and pthreads to capure and write at
the same time. Pcap filters can be specified on the command line. Logs go
to syslog. Under development are tools that analyze this traffic to
determine the type based on flows, not packet inspection.

Changes: The MySQL interface was updated to reliablly hold and reconnect
to the MySQL session when it goes away. All data is buffered until MySQL
comes back up. You can even reinstall MySQL and it will reconnect.

About: Time Based Text allows the user to include more information in
written text by saving the time delta between keystrokes and offering a way
to reproduce it exactly how it has been written. It offers a protocol and
reference implementation that is easily embeddable in applications using
text-based human communication. The idea behind it is that email systems as
well poetry and literature may benefit from a time-based approach to text.
It comes with a portable program to generate TBT messages and a website to
upload and exchange TBT poetry.

About: Tofu provides an easy and very lightweight way to manage your todo
list(s). It stores each of your todo lists in a directory where tasks are
individually detailed as plain text files. Then you can assign these tasks
a level of priority and some markers to retrieve and manipulate (list,
view, edit, delete, etc.) them easily.

Changes: Several insidious bugs that made the selection flawed were fixed,
and from now on the initialization of the new stacks should work back
smoothly. Two new options were also added: "clean-on-move", which deletes
all of the markers on the moved tasks before transferring them, and
"source-auto-stamp", which automatically stamps these with the name of the
source stack.

About: VNCcrack is a simple, fast offline-mode VNC password cracker. It
takes a set of challenge-response pairs of the type passed during a VNC
authentication attempt, and attempts to recover the passwords using a
dictionary file.

Changes: This release supports scanning a pcap file for VNC
challenge/response authentications to attempt to crack, rather than forcing
them to be extracted to a text file in advance. The Botan library is now
used instead of OpenSSL for the DES operations. This version can check well
over a million passwords per second on a Core2 processor, and has been
