[001] - Absolute OS 12.1.13
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 11:07
About: Absolute Linux is a lightweight Slackware derivative that uses an
Icewm, pcmanfm, ROX-Filer, ivman, and others to create a lightweight yet
easy to use distribution. Installation is text-based but simplified, and
all packages are installed at once. It can run on a Pentium II and above,
including SMP systems. A minimum 128MB RAM is recommended. It features ease
of browsing any connected device in pcmanfm and an auto-popup menu for
inserted playable media. "Restricted" codecs are available to those
eligible via a root-user installer. There is a large range of software
available, including OpenOffice, Mplayer, GIMP, and K3B.
Changes: This release was updated to kernel 2.6.27.5, including recompiles
of ndiswrapper, madwifi, and svgalib_helper. There were also several
audio/video package updates. Xpdf replaces epdfview due to the latter's
fragility because of dependencies.

[002] - Asymptote 1.51
by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 11:11
Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Support for the native glut library on Mac OS X now allows
Asymptote's adaptive OpenGL renderer to be used on all major platforms. The
OpenGL renderer now supports anti-aliasing. Rendering problems and normal
orientation issues were fixed. The up vector for embedded PRC output was
fixed. A viewportmargin parameter was added. File attachments now provide a
better way of embedding 3D PRC files in a LaTeX document. Support for
three-dimensional dimension bars was added. PenMargin3 and DotMargin3 were
fixed. The argument put=Above (put=Below) should now be replaced by
above=true (above=false).

[003] - Botan 1.7.21 (Development)
by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 22:53
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms, including AES,
DES, SHA-1, RSA, DSA, Diffie-Hellman, and many others. It also supports
X.509 certificates and CRLs, and PKCS #10 certificate requests, and has a
high level filter/pipe message processing system. The library is easily
portable to most systems and compilers, and includes a substantial tutorial
and API reference.
Changes: This release adds the ability for applications to query which
implementations of an algorithm Botan supports and acquire objects from
chosen implementations, as well as a microbenchmark system for easily
comparing the different available implementations at runtime. The HMAC_RNG
reseed logic was altered, increasing both performance and security.

[008] - deco file extraction framework 1.5.7
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 22:02
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a command-line program that, together with the deco-archive
package, allows you to extract dozens of popular archive file formats. It
has a consistent interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.rar 3.zip 4.flac 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions.
Changes: A rather theoretical bug concerning the extraction of symbolic
links was fixed. The code has been cleaned up.

[043] - queXF 1.3.0
by Adam Zammit (DCARF) (http://freshmeat.net/users/azammitdcarf/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 04:38
Office/Business
Scientific/Engineering
About: queXF (pronounced kweks-eff) takes scanned paper forms generated
using queXML and reads them. Operators can then verify that queXF has read
the form correctly. Once this is done, the data collected can be exported
in a fixed width ASCII file with a DDI data description. queXF can be used
as an alternative to programs such as Cardiff Teleform and Remark OMR, in
some situations. It removes the need to manually enter form data, therefore
reducing error and fatigue. It does OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) on each
form to determine if boxes have been filled, and can use Tesseract OCR to
determine what characters have been entered into boxes.
Changes: Interactive banding of forms (faster, using AJAX, thanks to
Prototype JS and Rectangular Marquee Tool). More accurate barcode
detection. All pages are XHTML 1.1 compliant. Page size modifications are
possible in config.inc.php. Banding zooming works without resetting the
page.

[044] - Rounded PHP 2.0
by Al (http://freshmeat.net/users/nak5ive/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 07:16
About: Rounded PHP is an API for creating perfect anti-aliased rounded
corner images on the fly. Using the internal GD library in PHP 5+ and a
simple set of query variables, a developer will have little need to store
many different rounded corner images to use around a Web site.
Changes: The API now has the capability to adjust color opacities (in PNG
format) and transparency in GIF formats. This is a major update. Each color
(foreground, background, and border colors) can have a different opacity
level. Installation has also been made easier by packing all of the
necessary scripts into one file.

[045] - rsyslog 3.21.7 (Beta)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 18:29
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text
files to syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to
work with the same configuration file syntax.
Changes: This version brings all features of the current development to
the beta branch. It also contains one new addition: the ability to replace
a not found regular expression match with a zero. This can be useful for
storing numerical values into databases. This is a recommended update for
all beta branch users.

[046] - Spey 0.5.pre1
by David Given (http://freshmeat.net/users/dgtaocouk/)
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 14:44
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
About: Spey is an SMTP proxy that sits between your existing mail server
and the outside world, blocking spam using a greylisting technique. It is
simple, lightweight, easy to install and configure, requires minimal
changes to your existing mail server, is completely independent of which
mail server you're using, and extremely effective. The author's spam intake
has dropped from over a hundred messages a day to about 5. It uses the
Sqlite database library as a backend.
Changes: This version adds proper support for AUTH, now handled entirely
by spey, to allow accredited users to bypass the greylist. In addition, a
number of serious bugs have been fixed.

About: The USB Network Daemon is an application that makes a USB interface
available over the network as transparently as possible. Because the data
structures that are accepted by the daemon are similar to the direct USB
calls of a well-known USB driver vendor, the (additional) implementation of
the network interface can be done easily. Because of that, applications can
be adapted for both local direct and remote network USB accesses easily.
Changes: The vendor and product ID of the handled devices can now be set
