[001] - 4Pane 0.6.0
  by David Hart (http://freshmeat.net/users/dghart/)
  Thu, Nov 20th 2008 18:17

Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: 4Pane is a four pane detailed-list file manager for Linux. It is
designed to be fully-featured without bloat, and aims for speed rather than
visual effects. In addition to standard file manager things, it offers
multiple undo and redo of most operations (including deletions), archive
management including 'virtual browsing' inside archives, multiple
renaming/duplication of files, a terminal emulator, and user-defined tools.

Changes: This release has a Quick-Grep dialog that provides the most
common grep options on a single page. The original, multi-page Full-Grep is
still available.

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Animath is a Finite Element Method library entirely implemented in
C++. It is suited for fluid-structure interaction simulation, and it is
mathematically based on higher-order tetrahedral elements. It provides
front-ends to matrix solvers and mesh generators.

Changes: Much time went into the development of mesh manipulation code,
i.e. edge collapse and vertex clustering routines (see the surfacemodel_c
interface). Parallel solving of vector-valued problems that have decoupled
components is now made easy by means of threads and employed in a new fluid
solver. Some quite significant enhancements can also be found in the
visualization code.

especially suitable for developing database-oriented applications. Database
connectivity is provided for PostgreSQL, MySQL, Informix, and ODBC. It
supports both ncurses (console mode) and GTK+ (GUI mode) output.

Changes: A build problem in which the last version wouldn't compile unless
you had a specific database installed was fixed. A couple of other minor
fixups were done.

Communications :: Conferencing
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: Boxtream is both an audio and video encoder and streamer and an
assembly of audio and video hardware, forming a mobile video streaming
studio. It is designed to easily record and stream live presentations,
including a presenter and synchronized slides, or slides only, or presenter
only. It was built to stream live courses over the Internet for distance
learning students. It supports and autodetects several brands and models of
video switchers. It can be entirely controlled remotely over XML-RPC, and
includes an X11 interface. By default, it supports five different streaming
and recording scenarios. The software part can also be used with very
minimal hardware, like a DV camcorder and a laptop.

Changes: For the very first time, three basic scenarios have been added
for people with minimalistic hardware like a single USB Webcam or mini-DV
camcorder, so finally Boxtream can be used by everybody. An example script
to start both the backend and the frontend on the local machine has been
added to further simplify use. Axis Webcams are now handled with the
souphttpsrc GStreamer plugin. Minor bugs were fixed all over the place. A
small French presentation of the project's history was added to the
distribution in the OpenDocument format.

Multimedia
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
Software Development :: Libraries

About: iTunes Export provides the ability to export iTunes Playlists to
the standard .m3u file format. Unfortunately, this feature is not included
in the iTunes application and is extremely useful for users who wish to use
iTunes with other applications or devices. iTunes Export is written in C#
(.Net). iTunes Export provides a Command Line version (tested on Mono) and
a GUI version, as well as a library that developers can use in their own
applications.

Changes: An issue with invalid characters in playlist filenames was fixed.
Some characters are valid in playlist names (within iTunes), but not valid
in filenames for the resulting playlist files. Multi-Language support was
added for the GUI version. Descriptions are now available in English and
French. The Library reader and all playlist writers were updated to use
UTF-8 encoding. The export routine was changed to include audio streams.
Disabled tracks (tracks that are unchecked in iTunes) are now ignored.

[021] - Low-Level Virtual Machine 2.4
  by Misha Brukman (http://freshmeat.net/users/brukman/)
  Thu, Nov 20th 2008 18:08

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Low-Level Virtual Machine (LLVM) is a compiler infrastructure
designed for compile-time, link-time, run-time, and "idle-time"
optimization of programs from arbitrary programming languages. It currently
supports compilation of C, Objective-C, and C++ programs, using front-ends
derived from GCC 4.0, GCC 4.2, and a custom new front-end, "clang". It
supports x86, x86_64, ia64, PowerPC, and SPARC, with support for Alpha and
ARM under development.

Changes: This release includes improved compilation speed, support for
multiple return values in LLVM IR, and initial support for PIC16. llvmc2
(the generic compiler driver) gained plugin support. It is now easier to
experiment with llvmc2 and build your own tools based on it. This release
also includes an optional build system based on CMake. It still is in its
early stages, but can be useful for Visual C++ users who cannot use the
Visual Studio IDE. Other improvements in LLVM internals include a more
efficient representation that leads to lower memory usage and better vector
support.

[022] - Monitorix 1.2.2
  by Jordi Sanfeliu (http://freshmeat.net/users/Mikaku/)
  Thu, Nov 20th 2008 09:18

System :: Monitoring

About: Monitorix is a lightweight monitoring tool designed to monitor as
many services as it can. At this time, it monitors from the CPU load and
temperatures to the users on the system. Network device activity, network
service demand, and even the devices' interrupt activity are also
monitored. It uses RRDtool as its logging and graphing back-end. The
current status of any corporate UNIX/Linux server with Monitorix installed
can be accessed via a Web browser.

Changes: A missing "/" when removing /var/www/monitorix in the
un_install.sh script was fixed. More than three network devices are now
accepted. There were some parts that were not correctly upgraded to five.
The parameter -w during the hddtemp call was added just to make sure that
it will awaken the disk (if needed). The .sh extension and the she-bang in
the crond script were removed for all Linux distributions, although
problems were experienced only in the Debian based ones. More fixes and
some enhancements were made.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: SafeSquid is a content filtering proxy server. It supports
'profiled' Internet access, a browser based interface, very fast
throughput, DNS caching, content caching, pre-fetching, bandwidth control,
virus scanning, ICP, CARP, and ICAP clients, source, target, and time-based
granular firewall style rules to allow or deny content like music, videos,
Flash and Java applets, messengers, chats, cookies, ActiveX, scripts, etc.,
remote authentication, real-time text and image analysis for blocking
pornography, and an URL filter.

Changes: A new parameter, OVERLOAD_FACTOR, has been introduced. A logical
flaw in cache cleaning operation has been traced and fixed. A logical flaw
in logged cache object size has been traced and fixed. The design of
cProfiles has been modified to allow it to query for an almost unlimited
number of Web sites simultaneously. Failure of the MD5 integrity check for
cached objects has been corrected. A logical bug while updating or
modifying the entries in cache has been corrected. Dynamically generated
objects are not cached now. Memory requirements have been tremendously
slimmed down.

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: SOHT (Socket over HTTP Tunneling) allows you to tunnel socket
connections through an HTTP proxy. Restrictive firewalls often prohibit all
outgoing trafic except for HTTP. This application allows you to tunnel
socket connections over the HTTP protocol. This application consists of a
server that serves as a proxy and a client which tunnels a socket
connection over an HTTP connection to the server. The current server is
written in Java, and there are clients in Java and .NET.

Changes: A patch to enable HTTPS connections and ignore certificate
warnings was applied.

[033] - SymPy 0.6.3
  by Ondrej Certik (http://freshmeat.net/users/ocertik/)
  Thu, Nov 20th 2008 01:07

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: SymPy is a symbolic manipulation package, written in pure Python.
Its aim is to become a full featured CAS in Python, while keeping the code
as simple as possible in order to be comprehensible and easily extensible.
Currently, Sympy has only around 1600 lines of code (including comments),
and its capabilities include basic arithmetics, basic simplification,
series expansion, functions (exp, ln, sin, cos, tan, etc.),
differentiation, integration (currently it can do only very simple
integrals), basic substitution, arbitrary precision integers and rationals,
standard (Python) floats, basic complex numbers, and symbolic limits.

Changes: Ported to Python2.6 (all tests pass) and Jython (all tests pass
except those depending on the "ast" module). True division was fixed (all
tests pass with the "-Qnew" Python option). buildbot.sympy.org was created;
sympy is now regularly tested on Python 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 on both i386 and
amd64. py.bench: py.test-based benchmarking. bin/test: a simple
py.test-like testing framework, without external dependencies and with
nicely colored output. Most limits now work. Factorization over Z[x] was
greatly improved. Piecewise function was added. nsimplify() was
implemented. Symbols and var syntax were unified. C code printing.

conventional word processor, yet it gives you much more flexibility to
alter or reuse content while keeping its integrity intact. It lets you
collaborate on compound documents that contain embedded data from various
sources. Content is viewed as an integrated whole that is intuitively
transparent to authors.

Changes: The release fixes a number of issues, including problems with
WebDAV locking.

for unAPI and COinS metadata allow for easy access by clients and search
engines.

Changes: This release sports a refined interface, offers a query history
and search suggestions, and supports more record types as well as searching
for duplicates. It can now import from SciFinder and Endnote XML as well as
from ArXiv ID or DOI. It also supports additional export formats (ADS,
Atom, ISI, OAI_DC XML, and Word XML) and citation styles (AMA, APA,
Chicago, Harvard, MLA, and Vancouver), and allows you to dynamically
include results into foreign Web pages. Support for the OpenSearch protocol

About: WYMeditor is a Web-based WYSIWYM editor (What You See Is What You
Mean) whose goal is to produce XHTML-CSS compliant code. It lets the writer
concentrate on the structure and the content of the document, not on the
visual layout.

Changes: This release has new translations, and new API calls: wrap() and
unwrap(). These new helpers bring support for more inline elements, such as
acronym, abbreviation, cite, code, span, etc. Many bugs have been fixed
since beta1. The documentation and the test suite have been improved. New
example pages have been added. Last but not least, work is being done on a
WYMeditor-based RDFa editor. A proof of concept is available in the package
or the repository browser.
