[001] - Adaptive Quality of Service Architecture 1.1.0 (qosres)
  by cucinotta (http://freshmeat.net/users/cucinotta/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 22:29

Multimedia
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: AQuoSA is an open architecture for the provisioning of adaptive
Quality of Service functionality into the Linux kernel. The project
features a flexible, portable, and lightweight software architecture for
supporting QoS-related services on top of a general-purpose operating
system as Linux. The architecture is well founded on formal scheduling
analysis and control theoretical results. At the core of the software is an
adaptive Resource Reservation layer that is capable of dynamically adapting
the CPU allocation for QoS-aware applications based on their run-time
requirements.

Changes: This release fixes various issues that were identified 1.0.0, and
adds some extra capabilities to the core scheduling algorithm. Among
others, the scheduler now implements spare capacity and/or dynamic
reclamation policies through compile-time switches (see qres_config.h.in
for details); the qres command-line utility has been enriched with an
almost complete support to the operations available through the qreslib
API; and the qres_setparams() function has been fixed, so that now the
server period may be changed as well as the budget.

  by Joe Croft (http://freshmeat.net/users/croftj/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 14:31

Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Ah3 is an invoicing and inventory system for repair shops. It comes
configured for an auto repair shop but can be configured to handle any shop
with customers who have things to be repaired. It includes a customer and
vehicle database, the ability to generate invoices, and the ability to
track the repair history of a vehicle. It also tracks inventory, allowing
for parts with multiple vendors and costs and other information. Ah3 is the
successor to Autohouse II.

Changes: A Lookup Parts button was added to the Ah3xs Parts tab. The
system was modified to iterate through all of the tabs on startup to fix
geometry issues. It was also modified to enable and disable the Lookup
Parts button at the appropriate times. The libraries were changed to the
appropriate versions for the binary installations.

About: Artha is a handy cross-platform thesaurus based on WordNet with
distinct features like hot key pop-up, notification, dual modes, and more.
Artha may be used as a replacement or clone for WordWeb on Unix-like
operating systems.

Changes: The thesaurus/dictionary lookups are local. Artha, when summoned
by its hotkey, brings up better results now. Balloon tip notifications are
made better. A toolbar button has been added for toggling notifications.
The dependency on GLib has been reduced from 2.16 to 2.10 by writing custom
wrappers wherever needed.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: The aim of auch (audio-checker) is to visualize harmonics in
musical recordings. Many tools show the spectrum, but this tool focuses on
one or two specific octaves, with an indication of the tonica,
sub-dominant(IV), and dominant(V). This way, notes, chords, and harmonics
in a musical piece become clearer. It also supports other types of
transformation (like wavelets, surface waves, strings, resampling, etc).
Another feature is that this tool can compare incoming and outgoing audio
to test external filters.

Changes: Origami was used as an inspiration to create a moving 3D object
that 'dances' to music.

[006] - BeanKeeper 2.6.0
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 22:21

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: BeanKeeper (formerly Simple Persistence for Java) is a full
featured, powerful object/relational persistence and query library. It has
a unique philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require
config files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind
of tools to be used. It handles simple Java beans (or POJOs) and its query
service returns lists. Despite its simpleness, under the hood the library
takes care of all the necessary logic: transaction visibility, result list
paging, keys and ids, table creation/modification, class relations,
inheritance/polymorphism, case sensitiveness, and much more. It currently
supports: Oracle, HSQLDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Changes: Java-cup was replaced with JavaCC for parser generation. JUnit
was replaced with TestNG. Ant was replaced by Maven2. One memory leak bug
was fixed. The code was cleaned up to pass the checkstyle audit.

  by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 14:35

System :: Diagnostics
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap which
could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had happened
between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify where to
search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is found.

Changes: Native support for the Windows EventLog was added (which requires
the Win32-Perl-Module). Multiline-output was added. Pathnames can now
contain blanks.

supports generic phone system features like call forwarding, hunt groups
and call distribution, call coverage and ring groups, holding, and call
transfer, as well as offering SIP specific capabilities such as presence
and messaging. It supports secure telephone extensions for making calls
over the Internet, and intercept/decrypt-free peer-to-peer audio and video
extensions. It is not a SIP proxy, a multi-protocol telephone server, or an
IP-PBX, and does not try to emulate Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, or Yate.

Changes: New SWIGs for Perl, C#, and Java and a new CDR processing
subsystem have been introduced. More functionality has been exposed to
plugins.

About: gtkaml is an XML syntax and an XML parser that extends the
Vala.Parser and transforms all your XML tags into a valid Gtk+ UI class. It
features a compact XML syntax for describing the way Gtk widgets are laid
out in a (new) custom widget you're creating. Code "islands" (written in
Vala) are used for widget signal handling and other
methods/signals/properties that you're introducing. It doesn't depend on an
external library at run-time, and it is much more readable than the usual
UI boilerplate.

About: Piggydb is an easy-to-use Web application for building a personal
knowledge repository. The knowledge in the repository is composed of
knowledge fragments which you input in a manner similar to blogging. You
can also input any file as a knowledge fragment. Piggydb enables you to
create highly structural knowledge by providing features such as flexible
relationships between knowledge fragments and hierarchical tagging. It
encourages you to organize your knowledge continuously to discover new
ideas or concepts, and moreover enrich your creativity.

Changes: This release contains one trivial feature and usability
improvements. The new feature is support for special tags, which are "pre"
and "code". If a knowledge fragment is tagged as "pre", it will be
displayed as pre-formatted text, which means the wiki formatting will not
be applied to the content. If a fragment is tagged as "pre" and "code", it
will be displayed as pre-formatted text with syntax highlighting that is
realized by google-code-prettify.

  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 18:14

Software Development
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: relman is a tool that takes your source code, runs the build, and
distributes the packages. A configuration file allows you to define
application-wide defaults in addition to information particular to
individual projects such as the source directory, package name, and the
like. Once set up, you just have to call relman with the name given to the
project plus the version to release. It calls pkgmake to build .tar.gz,
deb, and .rpm files, and then distributes them using FTP and/or SCP all in
one run.

Changes: Some problems with "tar only" projects have been fixed. New
features include the distribution of PKGBUILD files (which then include the
md5sum of the tar file as well) and the ability to use the variables $PRG
and $version (the first two args passed to relman) in the configuration
files.

[052] - rsyslog 3.21.10 (Beta)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 14:36

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text
files to syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to
work with the same configuration file syntax.

Changes: This is a bug-fixing release. Most importantly, a race that could
result in a segfault in specific scenarios has been addressed. Also, some
command-line switches were incorrectly processed and a debug string was
accidentally written to stdout on daemon termination. This is a recommended
update for all users of the beta branch.

Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting

About: SAFE stands for Service and Administration Front End. It is a basic
Web-based application that allows small companies to perform invoicing
tasks, both one-off invoices and recurring services (subscriptions).
Subscriptions can be entered with a price per month, per quarter, or per
year. Invoice lines can be joined together by your company administrator
into an invoice. That invoice can then be downloaded in PDF format,
printed, and sent to the customer. SAFE is meant to allow non-techical
people to work with the invoicing system, so simplicity is key.

[055] - Seed7 2009-02-01
  by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 00:31

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements and
operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: A new saving phase was added to the savehd7.sd7 example program.
Savehd7 can be used to save a potentially damaged hard disk partition to an
image file. A new chapter about class methods was added to the manual. The
chapter about the type 'type' in the manual, was improved. A check for NULL
pointers was added to the function raise_with_arguments.

[057] - Shed Skin 0.1
  by srepmub (http://freshmeat.net/users/srepmub/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 05:44

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Shed Skin is an experimental (restricted-)Python-to-C++ compiler.
It accepts pure but implicitly statically typed Python programs and
generates optimized C++ code. The result can be further compiled to
stand-alone programs or extension modules. For a set of 16 non-trivial test
programs, measurements show a typical speedup of 2-40 over Psyco, about 10
on average, and 2-220 over CPython, about 35 on average. Not all Python
features are supported, and only a subset of about 17 library modules, such
as re and random.

Changes: Improved support for 'os' (UNIX). The addition of a JPEG decoder
(1200 lines) and some other programs to the set of example programs.
Extension module fixes. Improved compiler flags under OS X. An important
type inference fix. Improved variable overloading. Casting improvements.
Fixes for setslice and delslice corner cases. xrange returns an xrange
object, not iterator. There are several minor bugfixes.

[059] - Streamline 1.8.0.1
  by Willem de Bruijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdebruij/)
  Mon, Feb 2nd 2009 10:22

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Streamline is a pipelined I/O subsystem for both kernel and
application processing on Linux, with 40+ filters for pattern matching,
stream reassembly, compression, etc. It exports the pipes, sockets, and
pcap interfaces and uses shared memory to reduce I/O copy and context
switch cost. Logical uses are rapid application development of intrusion
detection systems and similar complex network processing tasks.

Changes: This version updates the stream language to be a superset of Unix
shell pipelines and improves support for hybrid pipelines consisting of
streamline filters (e.g., in the network stack) and full Unix processes.
Because of the extensive interface changes, this version is less mature
than 1.7.4.5 and has little documentation (other than the mailing list).
