About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.

Changes: A fix was included to handle a change to Applet ClassLoader in
Sun Java 1.6r12. Some synchronization fixes should now reliably allow a PDF
to be saved while it is being displayed in another thread. The
AnnotationMarkup class was fixed to correctly highlight rotated text and to
allow multiple lines of text to be marked-up in one annotation. A problem
with fields in some PDFs overflowing on flatten() was fixed. Big
improvements were made to text extraction when a PDF contains differently
sized fonts or overlapping rows (such as newspapers or magazines).

  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 06:21

Software Development :: Testing

About: crpcut is the Compartmented Robust Posix C++ Unit Test system.
crpcut (pronounced "Crap Cut") runs all test cases in their own process and
their own working directory, which makes it perfectly normal to test that
asserts do trap, and the test suite continues even in the event of an
unexpected SIGSEGV. By using the C99 preprocessor, and a few other C++0x
features long available in GCC, the tests are extremely easy to write.

Changes: crpcut now accesses all standard library functions directly
through dlopen()/dlsym(), and provides macros that makes it easy to
redefine the library functions you need for your tests, while still having
the original functions reachable in the crpcut::wrapped namespace.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: Fire.fm is a Firefox extension to access the extensive music
library on Last.fm. It lets you listen to music related to your favorite
artist and discover new artists and music in the process. It can also be
used to listen to your friend's favorite music and to find Last.fm users
with musical taste similar to your own. Your favorite stations can be
accessed quickly by typing a few letters into the location bar. The
auto-play feature begins playing the last station you played when you
closed Firefox.

Changes: This release uses the Last.fm 2.0 API, which gives the user more
control, and avoids having to store the Last.fm password in order to use
Scrobble. Tagging tracks, artists, and albums is now possible. The status
bar controls now allow a 'Full' version that shows track information. Easy
access to the 'My Library' station has been added. The volume button can
now be used to toggle between sound and mute, through a setting.

System :: Recovery Tools

About: fsarchiver is a system tool that allows you to save the contents of
a filesystem to a compressed archive file. The filesystem can be restored
on a partition that has a different size, and it can be restored on a
different filesystem. Unlike tar/dar, fsarchiver also creates the
filesystem when it extracts the data to partitions. Everything is
checksummed in the archive in order to protect the data. If the archive is
corrupt, you just lose the current file, not the whole archive.

Changes: The management of filesystem features for ext2/ext3/ext4 has been
rewritten so that it works in all cases (such as with old e2fsprogs
versions or when doing a filesystem conversion). Also, compilation errors
were fixed on rhel-5.x and fedora-11-alpha. Filesystem detection was

About: get_iplayer allows a user to download or stream any BBC iPlayer TV
program (H.264/Quicktime), ITVplayer TV programs (ASF/WMV), Hulu TV
programs (FLV/AVI), iPlayer radio programs (MP3/AAC/RealAudio), and BBC
podcasts (MP3/AAC). It downloads Hulu and iPlayer subtitles. It supports
Flash iPlayer and Hulu downloads. It has full PVR functionality for
automatic searching, queuing, and downloading.

Changes: The BBC iPlayer get_metadata method no longer assumes that every
program has an episode name. --info now displays all collected metadata.
iphone download now uses a 12-digit random number (probably not significant
though). XML output for Freevo and MythTV has been cleaned up, and some
matching bugs fixed. Program metadata is automatically fetched if required,

  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 07:33

Text Editors

About: GNU nano (Nano's ANOther editor, or Not ANOther editor) is an
enhanced clone of the Pico text editor.

Changes: Issues with the new sped-up syntax highlighting code were
corrected. Other fixes include configure-time detection of groff HTML
support before attempting to generate the HTML version of man pages. Using
~ or ~username syntax in .nanorc should now work again. Also, nano will now
only ask for one acknowledgment of errors it encounters when parsing nanorc
files, and a new -q (--quiet) flag will silence these messages altogether.

[025] - I'm Cross! 20090215
  by Ron Burkey (http://freshmeat.net/users/rburkey/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 05:37

About: I'm Cross! is a script that installs cross-compiler toolchains that
target Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X on a developer's Linux workstation.
Additionally, it installs cross-compiled versions of various libraries,
such as wxWidgets, GTK+, FLTK, Allegro, PCRE, libxml2, zlib, and
pthreads-w32, as well as installer (setup.exe) creation tools. This
provides an easy way to set up a Linux workstation to simultaneously build
Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X executables from the same source tree, and
then to create installer programs for those executables.

Changes: Both PPC and Intel architectures on Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 are
thought to be functional. XCode 3 is supported. gcc "darwin8" was upgraded
to "darwin9". GTK+ is now supported (Intel 10.5 only). On both Mac OS X and
Win32, bugs preventing builds on many platforms were fixed. wxWidgets and
GTK+ versions were upgraded. By default, to speed installation, only tools
and libraries being used natively are built for cross-platform development.
The default installation location has been changed to the user's home
directory (rather than system directories needing administrative
permissions).

  by Hidde (http://freshmeat.net/users/hidde/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 05:41

Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks

About: Interleave is a Web-enabled business process automation
application. It enables you to model your business process like purchasing,
project management, and contract management and make it available online.
It's meant to replace processes which currently rely on paper, email, or
spreadsheets and it has a very good workflow engine. You can create
invoices, export to RTF and PDF based on templates, export to MS Excel,
interpret incoming email, and publish your data to the Web.

Changes: This version brings Ajax-enabled auto-save of all form elements.
A new PDF engine was implemented and the default PDF report was replaced
with a nicer one. FlexTable support was vastly improved and the MS Excel
export now supports the 2007 format. With the new auto-escalation engine
you can escalate your entities based on your SLA to the minute.

[028] - Inverse SOGo Integrator for Thunderbird 0.91
  by Extra (http://freshmeat.net/users/extrafu/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 05:38

Office/Business :: Groupware

About: Inverse SOGo Integrator for Thunderbird is an extension that
transforms Thunderbird into a pure "heavy" client for SOGo. Whereas the
SOGo Connector is meant for portability, the SOGo Integrator provides
"vertical" integration with the SOGo groupware server by making use of the
specific features it provides. The general features provided are: remote
administration of folder subscriptions, an automatic replication of user
folders and subscriptions, propagation of updates to chosen extensions from
a local update server, and propagation of default settings and integrated
GUI elements.

Changes: The ability to force user preferences and remove extensions was
added. The "home" calendar is now removed if it contains no items. The
search of users was accelerated by resolving their shares only when the
corresponding user entry is unfolded. It is now possible to show only the
selected calendar or all of them. The creation of cached CalDAV calendars
is now forced immediately, and the full name and email address of the
subscribed calendar/address book is shown immediately.

[030] - Jaikoz 2.8.4
  by paul taylor (http://freshmeat.net/users/paultaylor1/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 15:32

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors

About: Jaikoz is a powerful tag editor that allows you to organize, edit,
and correct thousands of audio tags with ease. Jaikoz has powerful
automation features. Jaikoz uses MusicBrainz and MusicIP, online databases
of over 5 million songs, which can match your songs automtically based on
the actual music as well as the metadata. Jaikoz uses a convenient
spreadsheet view to allow you to edit information very quickly and provides
many autoformatting tasks which do most of the work for you.

Changes: The .m4b (Audio Book) format is now supported. When updating
images from Discogs, the primary image should always be favored over the
secondary image. When updating Musicbrainz and receiving a 503 error,
Jaikoz does not request that queries are not cached, so a customer's
Internet connection could just return a cached query when a retry is
attempted. An error updating iTunes was fixed.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Manent is an algorithmically strong backup and archival program. It
features efficient backup to anything that looks like storage. Currently it
supports plain filesystems ("directories"), FTP, and SFTP. Planned are
Amazon S3, optical disks, and email (SMTP and IMAP). It can work (making
progress towards finishing a backup) over a slow and unreliable network. It
can offer online access to the contents of the backup. Backed up storage is
completely encrypted. Backup is incremental, including changed parts of
large files. Moved, renamed, and duplicate files will not require
additional storage. Several computers can use the same storage for backup,
automatically sharing data. Both very large and very small files are
supported efficiently. Manent does not rely on timestamps of the remote
system to detect changes.

Changes: The database of intermediate committed nodes is now stored in
memory. This drastically reduces the number of write accesses during scan,
and gives a 20% speedup.

[059] - Tor-ramdisk 20090217
  by Anthony G. Basile (http://freshmeat.net/users/blueness/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 16:03

Communications
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Tor-ramdisk is an i686 uClibc-based micro Linux distribution whose
only purpose is to host a Tor server in an environment that maximizes
security and privacy. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows
people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet.
Security is enhanced in tor-ramdisk by employing a monolithically compiled
GRSEC/PAX patched kernel and hardened system tools. Privacy is enhanced by
turning off logging at all levels so that even the Tor operator only has
access to minimal information. Finally, since everything runs in ephemeral
memory, no information survives a reboot, except for the Tor configuration
file and the private RSA key, which may be exported/imported by FTP.

Changes: This release includes minor feature enhancements and incorporates
security fixes from upstream. Tor was updated to version 0.2.0.34. The UI
was enhanced, so now users can check or set the system time via rdate as a
fallback if ntpd should fail, and top information is included when querying
the system resources. The scripts to build tor-ramdisk from scratch were
cleaned up. As with all releases, this one has been tested "in the wild".

[061] - Virtualmin 3.66
  by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 05:42

System :: Systems Administration

About: Virtualmin is a Webmin module that simplifies the process of
setting up and managing virtual servers. It can create Apache virtual
hosts, BIND DNS domains, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and set up
Sendmail or Postfix to accept email for a domain. It can also manage
mailboxes and mail aliases within a domain.

Changes: The major change in this update is support for plans, which are
sets of quota, bandwidth, domain, and other limits. These can be applied to
new or existing virtual servers. Previously this functionality was combined
with templates, which made it too complex for the average user. Also in
this version is a far more extensive command-line and remote API, pre- and
post-backup commands, a default DNS TTL option, fixes for restores on
systems with a different log directory, support for editing per-domain
SpamAssassin config files, and more.

[062] - Web Performance Suite 3.5 Release 12
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Tue, Feb 17th 2009 18:48

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: The Web Performance Suite is a suite of testing tools for Web
servers, including load testing, Web page performance analysis, and
operating system tuning. The statistical analysis in the Load Testing
Module takes your site's performance criteria, and determines the number of
users your Web site can handle. Because data is collected at the URL level,
it not only identifies slow Web pages, but identifies the particular part
of the Web page that caused the problem. It includes hard-to-find features
such as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, AJAX
support, SOAP support, and more.

Changes: This release fixes two bugs that only affected a small number of
users, one where the Advanced Statement Management logic took hours to run
(WPA-1284), and another where one particular site was causing the reports
to not be generated (WPL-925). If you're using the program and aren't
having either of these problems, it's recommended that you skip this update
for now.
