Section: Project Reviews
Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 00:00

As anyone working with sensitive data should know, all systems, despite
the OS, are open to malicious attack, whether intentional or accidental.
Whether system harm comes from an exploited hole or an accidental malicious
action that damages all or part of the installation, top-grade security
installed on the machine should be used to prevent it.

[005] - Bitvector Library 3.0.0
  by Wolf Software (http://freshmeat.net/users/offswn/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 00:50

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Bitvector is a C library that allows you to use strings rather than
ints for internal flags. On many platforms, ints are limited to 32 bits and
are thus limited to 32 flags available for a given flag variable. Bitvector
uses a resizing char array for flags, allowing much greater flexibility for
flag management.

Changes: This release features general cleanup and the addition of man
pages, a changelog system, etc. This software has also changed ownership,
and has been re-released under a new version in order to bring it in line
with all other offerings from Wolf Software.

[006] - C++ ResourcePool 0.99.24
  by mws (http://freshmeat.net/users/mws/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 19:34

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: Logging and tracing functionality was added. More precisely, an
event observer framework was implemented along with an example
implementation that logs all observed events. Users have the ability to
integrate with their favorite log framework themselves. A public class was
renamed so that client programs will need a trivial code change to compile
again.

  by Chris (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrislusf/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 06:21

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, configurable result ranking, highlighted search
results (like Google), and categorized result counts (like Amazon).
Scaffolding supports tag cloud, AJAX search suggest, and a spell checker.
It can easily integrate with other languages with XML/JSON/HTML. There is a
UI for all operations, so no Java coding is necessary. Deleted or updated
records in database can be synchronized. Content outside the database can
also be searched.

Changes: Multiple-Choice Partial Scaffolding was added.
Suggest-as-you-type now works for 1 character also. Column-specific partial
scaffolding was added so that it can be applied several times. Scaffolding
now can be applied to subdirectories. Performance for spell checking
dictionary generation was greatly improved for large indexes. Performance
for deletion detection was greatly improved and efficient. Different
versions of the same jdbc drivers can be used. Multiple-Choice Query was
added. Scaffolding for RSS syndication was fixed. A problem in which
jQuery.js was included twice was fixed.

[011] - DenyThem .003
  by MatthewRogers (http://freshmeat.net/users/matthewrogers/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 06:25

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: DenyThem is a program designed to protect your Linux system from
malicious attacks. It is an active response system to disrupt and block
dictionary attacks and DOS attacks. DenyThem by default uses
/var/log/syslog and /var/log/auth.log and searches for hack attempts. When
DenyThem finds enough hack attempts from a single host, it will add a DROP
statement to your system's firewall, thus preventing future attacks.
DenyThem uses iptables, so it will only work on Linux or any other system
that uses iptables. It can also block traffic from specific countries.

Changes: This version adds country blocking support, allowing you to block
complete countries from accessing the system. Multiple log support and
custom flag support were also added. This allows you to add an invalid
access flag and a regular expression to pull the host.

  by Smthng (http://freshmeat.net/users/smthng/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 15:20

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: FetchYahoo is a Perl script that downloads mail from a Yahoo!
account to a local mail spool. It is meant to replace fetchmail for people
using Yahoo! mail since Yahoo!'s POP service is no longer free. It
downloads messages to a local mail spool, including all parts and
attachments. It then deletes messages unless requested not to. It can also
optionally forward messages to a specified email address and repeat with a
given  interval.

Changes: This fixes the downloading of messages with attachments.

[015] - Figaro's Password Manager 2 0.75
  by Aleš Koval (http://freshmeat.net/users/alsik/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 20:09

Information Management
Security :: Cryptography

About: Figaro's Password Manager 2 (FPM2) is a GTK2 port of Figaro's
Password Manager, originally developed by John Conneely. It allows you to
securely store your passwords, which are encrypted with the AES-256
algorithm. It allows you to copy passwords or usernames to the clipboard or
primary selection. If a password is for a Web site, FPM can keep track of
the URLs of your login screens and can automatically launch your browser.
You can also teach FPM to launch other applications. FPM can sort your
passwords into categories. Finally, it has a password generator that can
help you choose good passwords.

Changes: Passwords are now encrypted with the AES-256 (old versions used
Blowfish) algorithm, and the key for encryption is generated with PBKDF2
using HMAC-SHA-256 with 8192 iterations. You can optionally use two-factor
authentication. To decrypt the list of passwords, you must know the master
password and have the key file.

[016] - Fimex 0.12
  by Heiko Klein (http://freshmeat.net/users/heikok/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 15:14

Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
Scientific/Engineering :: Physics

About: Fimex is a the File Interpolation, Manipulation and EXtraction
library for gridded geospatial data. It converts between different,
extensible data formats (currently felt and netcdf). It enables you to
change the projection and interpolation of scalar and vector grids. It
makes it possible subset the gridded data and to extract only parts of the
files. For simple usage, Fimex also comes with the command line program
fimex.

Changes: Fimex is now able to reproject data which is indexed only by
coordinates, such as data coming from GHRSST satellite files. To sustain
the performance of these interpolations, either kdtree or brute-force
search can be done. The brute force search makes use of multiple processors
by using OpenMP. In addition, the build process has been simplified and
smaller bugs have been fixed.

[017] - fsarchiver 0.4.4
  by François Dupoux (http://freshmeat.net/users/fdupoux/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 16:43

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Filesystems
System :: Recovery Tools

About: fsarchiver is a system tool that allows you to save the contents of
a filesystem to a compressed archive file. The filesystem can be restored
on a partition that has a different size, and it can be restored on a
different filesystem. Unlike tar/dar, fsarchiver also creates the
filesystem when it extracts the data to partitions. Everything is
checksummed in the archive in order to protect the data. If the archive is
corrupt, you just lose the current file, not the whole archive.

Changes: The compression ratio has been optimized for filesystems with
many small files. Instead of compressing the data of each file in a
separate block, multiple small files now share the same data block, which
provides a better compression ratio. A bug regarding the unmount which is
done at the end of the operation was fixed. The "-a" option was added,
which allows you to ignore the check for the acl and user_xattr mount
options when the user is doing a backup of a filesystem which is already
mounted.

[023] - goofs 0.7.2
  by Ryan Wynn (http://freshmeat.net/users/bigwynnr/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 21:33

About: goofs is filesystem in userspace (FUSE) that aims to expose Google
services such as Picasa images, contacts, blogs, documents, spreadsheets,
presentations, calendars, etc. It is written using the Java binding for
FUSE, FUSE-J, together with gdata-java-client.

Changes: This release adds more support for Google documents. You could
previously save new documents to the cloud, but could not export existing
document content to the filesystem. This has been fixed. Your documents can
now be exported to the filesystem in all the formats supported by Google
docs. Overriding the default export formats (odt, ods, and ppt) is
supported. You can also re-export a document by renaming it with a
different file extension.

can also input any file as a knowledge fragment. Piggydb enables you to
create highly structural knowledge by providing features such as flexible
relationships between knowledge fragments and hierarchical tagging. It
encourages you to organize your knowledge continuously to discover new
ideas or concepts, and moreover enrich your creativity.

Changes: This release contains two important features: Fragment Bookmark
and Related Tags. Fragment Bookmark was implemented with a special
"bookmark" tag. If a fragment is tagged as "bookmark", it will be added to
the list of bookmarks in the sidebar navigation. Related Tags View is added
to the sidebar of the tag and filter page. Related tags are all other tags
that belong to searched fragments. By clicking on the plus button next to a
related tag, the fragments are filtered with a new set of tags so that
users can drill down to pinpoint exactly what they need.

[055] - Quad-Ren 0.3
  by Hessiess (http://freshmeat.net/users/Hessiess/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 01:54

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Quad-Ren is a resolution independent 2D graphics engine that aims
to ease the development of bitmap-based applications, primarily games. It
will run regardless of screen resolution or aspect ratio, and works
flawlessly with tiling window managers. It rectifies many of the issues
with older methods of 2D game development such as color key transparency
(which inevitably leads to aliasing) and having to draw sprites in a
specific order, which Quad-Ren handles using alpha transparency and layers
respectfully. It is programmed in, and usable from C++, with a simple
object-oriented API and a small, well documented, easy to edit code base.

Changes: The primary highlight of this release is that the API is now
completely documented; see the API Documentation section of the Web site.
There have been some minor feature additions such as an FPS counter. The
QRDD file reader/writer and math functions have been moved into the
qrdd_file_handler and qr_math objects, making the API 100% object oriented.

[056] - rdup 0.9.0
  by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 16:45

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of the
names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also handles
files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups. Auxilary
script that implement a backup strategy are included.

Changes: The outputting of files now happens in a block/chunk based
manner, eliminating a nasty race condition. Pathname encryption and
decryption was added to rdup-tr.

[057] - Remote HellaNZB GUI 0.9.3.1
  by NothernLights (http://freshmeat.net/users/NorthernLights/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 01:39

Communications :: Usenet News

About: Remote HellaNZB GUI is a small GTK+ application to control your
HellaNZB daemon. It's well integrated into your desktop. In a few clicks,
you can manage your remote (or local) queue: add NZB files from your
computer or from their newzbin.com ID, set priorities, see the progress of
your downloads, etc. Unlike other similar projects, this one can truly add
NZB files from your computer to your remote daemon; to do so, it copies
them through SSH. For Remote HellaNZB GUI to work you need a running
HellaNZB daemon; it does not configure it for you.

Changes: This release adds a Spanish translation. It will properly detect
the glade file location on the newest python-distutils installations.

[058] - Scannedonly 0.13
  by Olivier Sessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/olivier/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 01:11

Security
System :: Networking

About: Scannedonly is a samba VFS module that ensures that only files that
have been scanned for viruses are visible and accessible to the end user.
Scannedonly was developed because of scalability problems with samba-vscan.
Scannedonly comes in two parts: a Samba VFS module and (one or more)
daemons. The daemon scans files and marks them when they are known to be
clean. The samba module simply filters out files that aren't marked clean.

Changes: This release fixes some Solaris compile problems, and has several
new features for the ClamAV scanning daemon and for the Samba VFS module.
The scanning daemon has a configurable number of threads to scan large
files, and it can be configured to use a quarantaine directory. The VFS
module is now faster when listing a directory with many non-scanned files,
can show a user that files are being scanned, and has an option to allow
non-scanned files to ease migrations.

configuration files as you need. The schema output and HTML file generation
are started automatically after gathering the schema details. Support was
added for all flags except -sso and -noads. Many other small improvements
were made.

[066] - wview 5.1.1
  by Mark Teel (http://freshmeat.net/users/mteel/)
  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 01:49

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering

About: wview is an application that controls a supported weather station
to retrieve archive records and current conditions. Archive records may
optionally be stored in a relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a
user-defined interval, wview will use the archive history and current
conditions to generate weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages
based on configurable HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data
loggers, as well as connectivity with a terminal server or serial server
via TCP sockets.

Changes: This release adds an out-of-band utility to create the HILOW
database so that limited power platforms like the NSLU2 can create the new
database while the older version continues to archive data and generate
files from templates. See the UPGRADE file for full details on the process.

  Mon, Mar 2nd 2009 15:05

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Filesystems

About: xorriso creates, loads, manipulates, and writes ISO 9660 filesystem
images with Rock Ridge extensions. It can load the management information
of existing ISO images, and it writes the session results to optical media
or to filesystem objects. This is the standalone version that incorporates
the libraries of libburnia-project.org and thus depends only on Linux 2.4
(or later), libc, and libpthread. No mkisofs and no CD/DVD/BD burn program
are needed.

Changes: xorriso now can record ACLs and Extended Attributes in its ISO
images. Current operating systems will ignore them, but xorriso is able to
restore them when copying files from the ISO image to the local filesystem.
