[018] - CUT 2.4rc1
by Samuel A. Falvo II (http://freshmeat.net/users/kc5tja/)
Thu, Dec 2nd 2004 13:50
Software Development :: Bug Tracking
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: CUT is a unit-testing framework for C, C++, and Objective-C. Unlike
other unit testing tools, CUT doesn't strive to be an SUnit clone. It
automates a lot of the drudge work often encountered when using other unit
testing packages for the C family of programming languages. CUT may also be
used to unit-test assembly language software in some circumstances.
Changes: The directory layout was refactored for future BSD/Slackware
package generation. The Makefile now has "install" and "(un|de)install"
targets (which require root privileges to use). The default installation
locations of cut.h and cutgen-2 binaries are now in system-wide
directories, instead of being replicated across all projects. The tests
were cleaned up to take advantage of system-wide cut.h installation. The
-i option was added to override the default cut.h location.

synchronize the contents of one directory with another. It can compare
files by various attributes, such as size or modified-date. It can

function.
Changes: Bugs have been solved. The command line parameters "/usage",

remember the last filename and directory. Synchronizing a file that is
locked by another process only generates a warning instead of an error.

[046] - MoSSHe 1.2.6
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Thu, Dec 2nd 2004 08:33
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.
Changes: Quite a few bugs in the snmp check were repaired. The snmp.*
parameter files were changed accordingly. MBCheck in localcheck.functions
was improved. Quite a few bugs in localcheck.functions were fixed. The
path to "localcheck.functions" was nailed down. Check result sanitizing
was added within the mosshe script. A missing UNDEF listing was corrected
in the Web interface(s) and mosshe. SMTP check behavior when the service
is completely down was corrected. The HTTP check was improved. Now you can
define expected return values as also OK.

[047] - MPCA 1.0
by Wray Buntine (http://freshmeat.net/users/wbuntine/)
Thu, Dec 2nd 2004 09:15
Scientific/Engineering
About: MPCA is a comprehensive suite of tools for doing discrete principal
components analysis on data sets of size 100Mb or more. Scaling is done
using sparse vectors, multi-threading, memory mapping, and other POSIX
tricks. Reports, file dumping utilities, and other utilities are included.
The general problem of discrete components analysis is variously called
grade of membership, PLSA, non-neg.matrix factorization, multinomial
admixtures, LDA, and multinomial PCA.
Changes: This release incorporates Griffiths and Steyvers with Gibbs
sampling and M matrix compression. It also features topic-specific page
rank built using the components. Major interface changes were made since
the previous version. Some dubious package dependencies were eliminated,
which means easier compilation and more flexible runs. This version also
includes Sami Perttu's YDIN system for general document retrieval and a
Python component viewer. Documentation is still poor.

Thu, Dec 2nd 2004 07:55
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a set of network tools to gather IP traffic information
(bytes counter and number of packets). Aggregation of statistics is done
using simple primitives (VLAN ID, source/destination MAC address, IP
address, network, AS, port, and IP protocol) that can be used alone or
combined together to form complex aggregation methods. It supports
historical counter breakdowns, packet sampling, and packet tagging. Data
can be stored either in a memory table, an SQL database (MySQL or
PostgreSQL), or printed to stdout, and recovery actions are available to
avoid data loss during DB failures. Both the pcap library and NetFlow are
supported.
Changes: The recovery logfile structure has been enhanced with the
introduction of templates. By describing the data structure, they will
allow old logfiles to be read even if changes to internal structures have
occurred. Support for temporary (PPP and maybe PCMCIA cards also) devices
has been introduced. Some extra checks have been added to all link layer
routines. The executable triggering mechanism has been enhanced: status
information and statistics are now passed to the trigger in the form of
environment variables.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Terminal is a modern terminal emulator for the Unix/Linux desktop,

anti-aliasing can now be turned off. Session management support was added.
Multi-screen mode is supported. Right-click now works with terminal
applications that support it. Startup notification data is now passed

flickering when opening a new terminal was fixed. The preferences dialog is
accessible now. The whole user interface was reworked to comply with the
GNOME Human Interface Guidelines. Several other minor enhancements and

About: Traditional vi is derived from the 4BSD source and includes support
for modern operating systems, 8-bit input, multi-byte character encodings
like UTF-8, and features demanded by POSIX.2. It contains few additions

systems. It also has some features to cope with primitive terminals or
slow connections.
Changes: Support for multi-byte character encodings like UTF-8 has been
added. The 'w' visual command now advances beyond blanks at the end of the
current line. The ':s/foo/%/' substitution mechanism is now supported. Some
possible heap overflows have been fixed. The code has been converted to

gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
