About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.
Changes: The review of the common library was finished. Minor refactoring
was done. The first pass of the library's internal Python documentation

[006] - Backup Manager 0.5.4
by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 10:16
About: Backup Manager is a small and basic tool for generating archives.
It is designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for making
tarballs. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and zip archives. It can be run
in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Archives are kept
for a given number of days. Its upload system can use ftp or scp to
transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts. The
configuration file is very simple and basic.
Changes: The program can now burn archives to CDR and CDRW media
automatically. The burning system is based on mkisofs and cdrecord, and
will do the job with a pipe instead of creating the image on disk before
burning time. MD5 sums are now generated for each archive, and an MD5
checkup is performed when burning data in order to inform the user if an
archive is corrupted. This release aslo provides some minor bugfixes.

Sat, Dec 4th 2004 01:02
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Text Processing :: Filters
About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.
Changes: This version uses one transaction for all reads, to ensure proper
atomicity and isolation. It can also be compiled for Berkeley DB support
without transactions. It adds a username formatting option, and a "remove
environment" parameter.

About: CRM-CTT allows you to create entities to which you can attach
files, place alerts, prioritize, etc. It is multi-lingual and
customizable. It can be used for any department in which something comes
in, must be handled, and goes out, such as bug tracking, systems
management (including assets) or helpdesk call tracking. It creates
management information in PDF and Excel. Installation is done using a
simple script, and a clear manual is included.
Changes: This release now supports invoicing and mail merging based on
RTF templates. This enables users to rely totally on CRM- CTT as a primary
business application. With this version, a way to insert entities via
email was also added, enabling customers to email directly to CRM-CTT. A
database-cleanup function was added to (physically) delete entities which
were (logically) deleted before a given date. Admins can add links to the

[016] - DynChap 0.22
by wvw (http://freshmeat.net/users/wvw/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 13:48
Security
About: DynChap provides an additional pseudo hardware token based
authentication layer for PoPToP virtual private networks. The
authentication uses the user's mobile phone to generate a hash that needs
to be entered along with the user's password in a custom connection
dialogue. Upon connecting, the VPN verifies the authenticity of the hash.
The hash is generated from a serial (by default 32 printable characters)
stored in the J2ME based mobile phone and the current time; the VPN
server compares this hash against the serial and current time, minus or
plus a small deviation (by default 2 minutes). If the username, password,
and hash match, access is granted and the custom dialer is closed, the
connection can now be controlled like an ordinary VPN connection.

[017] - fairly fast packet filter 1.3.4
by Willem de Bruijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdebruij/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 19:59
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: The fairly fast packet filter (FFPF) is an approach to network
packet processing that adds many new features to existing filtering
solutions like BPF. It is designed for high speed by pushing
computationally intensive tasks to the kernel or even network processors
and by minimising packet copying. By providing both a richer programming
language and explicit extensibility, it is also considerably more
flexible than existing approaches. It provides a complete solution for
network monitoring that caters to all applications available today. Using
its extensibility, the language can even be used as a meta- filter to
"script" together filters from other approaches, such as BPF.

build process improvements.

Text Processing :: Filters
Text Processing :: General
About: glark offers grep-like searching of text files, with very powerful,
complex regular expressions (e.g., "/foo\w+/ and /bar[^\d]*baz$/ within 4
lines of each other"). It also highlights the matches, displays context
(preceding and succeeding lines), does case-insensitive matches, and
automatic exclusion of non-text files. It supports most options from the
GNU version of grep.
Changes: Input and output are now unbuffered. The --or expression now
matches the closest (most immediate) region, not the largest one. The

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA

[021] - GNU Pth 2.0.3
by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 11:24
Software Development :: Libraries
About: GNU Portable Threads (Pth) is a very portable POSIX/ANSI-C based
library for Unix platforms providing non-preemptive priority-based
scheduling for multiple threads of execution ("multithreading") inside
server applications. All threads run in the same address space, but each
thread has its own individual program-counter, run-time stack, signal mask
and errno variable. The scheduling is done in a cooperative way, i.e. the
threads are dispatched based on priority and pending events. The event
facility allows threads to wait until various types of events occur,
including pending I/O on filedescriptors, elapsed timers, pending I/O on
message ports, thread and process termination, and even customized
callback functions.
Changes: The "make striptease" command was resurrected. The
pth_uctx_save() and pth_uctx_restore() API functions were removed, since
they were broken by design. The internal pth_mctx_save() function was
enhanced if getcontext(3) is used for the machine context saving. Better
error checking in pth_key_xxx() functions was added. A new
PTH_CTRL_FAVOURNEW control was added for disabling the favouring of new
threads on scheduling.

Database :: Front-Ends
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
About: Knoda is a KDE database-frontend for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and
ODBC. Besides tables and queries, it also handles forms and reports, which
are scriptable via Python.
Changes: View support and a driver for SQLite3 were added. SQLite drivers
support indices. Database files in locations other than the ~/.hk_classes
directory can now be opened. The Postgres and the ODBC driver allow the
preselection of a database. Boolean fields are now tri-state
(TRUE,FALSE,NULL). Comboboxes can be set to an non-editable state. The new
command line option, --strongruntime, shows knoda without the object
selection window. The SQL editor supports the default functions CUT,
PASTE, FIND, and REPLACE, and is configurable now.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: NuFW is a authentication firewall suite: the gateway authorizes a
packet depending on which remote user has sent it. It can also set quality
of service on a per-user basis and log user activities into a SQL database.
Furthermore, the server architecture uses an external authentication source
such as an LDAP directory.
Changes: This release fixes bugs related to dropped packets: logging has
been fixed for the syslog module, and nufw is now sent a correct message
when no ACL is found for a packet.

[035] - nut 10.12
by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 13:43
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.
Changes: The function that guesses the recipes of packaged foods based on
the nutrition and ingredient statements has been rewritten. A much faster
implementation is achieved by quantizing all the values. This algorithm is
a search through all possible recipes because simultaneous equations do not
work for this problem.

[036] - OpenCSG 1.0.2
by Florian Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/FlorianKirsch/)
Sat, Dec 4th 2004 13:40
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: OpenCSG is a library that does image-based CSG rendering using
OpenGL. CSG is short for "constructive solid geometry" and represents a
modeling technique for composing shapes with 3D-primitives which are
combined using volumetric boolean operations. Image-based CSG rendering
means rendering CSG shapes without calculating their surface in
object-space. Instead, the image of a CSG shape is composed directly in
the frame-buffer of the graphics hardware by rather sophisticated
stenciling and z- buffer operations.
Changes: OpenCSG now comes with a workspace for Dev-C++ 5. A small bug has
been resolved that, in some cases, caused slower performance than with the
new version.

About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
