[002] - Allegro 4.1.17 (Development)
  by Grzegorz Adam Hankiewicz (http://freshmeat.net/users/gradha/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:08

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Allegro is a multi-platform game library for C/C++ developers that
provides many functions for graphics, sounds, player input (keyboard,
mouse, and joystick), and timers. It also provides fixed and floating
point mathematical functions, 3D functions, file management functions,
compressed datafile, and a GUI.

Changes: This release fixes a few problems with the sprite rotation code,
mouse acceleration in fullscreen modes under Windows, a bug in the Windows
keyboard driver, compilation problems on *BSD and BeOS, and some X11
graphics driver bugs. It addds support for the use of native window
manager cursors, adds is_windowed_mode() and scancode_to_name() functions,
keyboard layout detection code for Windows, an X11 message box for
allegro_message() under X11, and support for a fourth mouse button in the
Windows port. override_config_file() can also be used for writing to the
config file.

[003] - Ansel 2.2
  by Federico David Sacerdoti
(http://freshmeat.net/users/FedericoSacerdoti/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 22:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: Ansel is a picture gallery for web sites. It is a high quality,
information-rich photo gallery, designed to handle large numbers of images
and albums. It stores all its images in a database, making it both fast and
flexible. Ansel is similar in spirit to Shutterfly and Yahoo pictures, but
does not place restrictions on image size.

Changes: This version no longer allows potentially malicious HTML and
control characters into database. It also fixes a bug that prevented
Explorer from correctly sending image files.

About: Apetag is command line tagging tool for multimedia files such as
Monkey's Audio and Musepack that use the APE 2.0 standard. It also comes
with a script, tagdir, that will tag all the tracks in an album by invoking
apetag or other similar tools (e.g. metaflac) for each track. All that is
needed is the album's freedb record.

Changes: This version features improved messages and a new script for
removing id3v1 tags.

About: apt-iselect is a small wrapper for "apt-cache search" and "apt-get
install" which uses iselect to search and install packages. Special care
has been taken to make this tool easy and fast to use. It is generally
several times faster than using aptitude for this task.

Changes: This release adds a quick install option without the need to
view package details.

[006] - Asymptote 0.54
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:03

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: The dvips interface was reworked to make the output
EPS-conformant by avoiding use of the dvips -T option. Figures are
centered on the page by default, to facilitate direct printing of the
encapsulated output. Portrait/Landscape orientations and support for
standard PostScript/PDF viewers were added. Filenames containing ./ or ../
now work correctly. Graph sizing problems were fixed; the deferred drawing
routines now respect the clipping bounds. The installation and the
documentation were improved. Now asymptote.sty is automatically installed
in the system LaTeX directory.

  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 03:36

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: XFCE

About: Chris's Lame File Browser was designed as an alternative to
Nautilus, Rox, Endeavour, and other multi-desktop file managers. It is not
desktop dependent, which means it has very few requirements. It features a
system browser, drag and drop bookmarks, and audio and image previews as
well as popup windows containing ID3 tag information for MP3s.

Changes: A details/list view has been added, DND is up and copy/paste is
working. A host of bugs have been fixed and image previews are on the fly
so no slowdown loading. Also, popup information windows are improved (this
includes the ID3  popups).

[011] - cxxtools 1.2.1
  by Tommi Mäkitalo (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmaek/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:16

Software Development :: Libraries

About: cxxtools is a library of unrelated, but useful C++ classes. It
contains an argument-parser, a base-64 encoder/decoder, a C++ interface to
iconv, md5-stream for easy MD5 calculation, threading classes, socket
classes, a dynamic exception-safe buffer, a wrapper for dlopen/dlsym, a
pool template (e.g., for a connection pool in a multi-threaded
application), query_params, and a class for easy parsing of CGI parameters
(GET and POST) in a CGI program.

Changes: This release uses libtool for loading modules in dl::library for
better portability. It contains some simple logging macros for log4cplus
and a lightweight logging library, if log4cplus is not installed.

  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:13

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office

About: Mailadmin is a little administration interface to the popular Cyrus
mail server daemon. It supports every feature Cyrus provides, and fits in
most MTA configurations. For the sample scripts, Postfix is preferred. A
key feature is the non-standard, generic administration hierarchy which
not only seperates "normal users" from "administrators", but enables the
mailserver-master to create instances between them. You will be able to
let other users create their own sub-users and thus either share a single
mail server between different organizations or project your company's
employee structure.

Changes: Custom sub-folders can be defined to be created with each new
account. There are some new options regarding mailbox lists. Resources can
now be localized. There are a few other options.

[014] - Dovecot 0.99.12
  by Timo Sirainen (http://freshmeat.net/users/aaaaaa/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 02:34

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: Dovecot is an IMAP server whose major goals are security and
extreme reliability. It uses index files to optimally store the mailbox
state, which makes it very fast even with huge mailboxes. Indexes won't
prevent external mailbox updates, so Dovecot is still fully compatible
with standard Maildir and mbox formats. There's also a fully featured POP3
server included.

Changes: This release fixes various interoperability problems with
clients, memory leaks in LDAP and SQL authentication, and problems with
parsing mails with long lines.

[015] - DRBL 1.3.5-5 (Testing)
  by Steven (http://freshmeat.net/users/stevenshiau/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 03:37

About: Diskless Remote Boot in Linux (DRBL) provides a diskless or
systemless environment for client machines. It works on Debian, Mandrake,
Red Hat, and Fedora. Unlike LTSP, it uses distributed hardware resources
and makes it possible for clients to fully access local hardware. It also
includes Clonezilla, a partitioning and disk cloning utility similar to
Symantec Ghost.

Changes: In this release, the client can choose to use powerful-client
mode or thin-client mode. The setting for interactive mode "/
opt/drbl/setup/drblpush -i" is now saved into /etc/sysconfig/
drbl/drblpush.conf, so it can be re-run by calling "drblpush -c /etc/
sysconfig/drbl/drblpush.conf".

About: ebiff is an email notification agent like biff or Xbiff. It is
plugin-based, so its capabilities are only related to the plugins already
written. Currently, there are plugins to access mailboxes in mbox and
maildir format, notify the user by playing a sound, writing an
on-X-display message, broadcasting a message to all users' terminals,
synthesizing a voice that says what you want, or drawing a gbuffy-like

  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:18

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: glibc-audit is a modified version of glibc for application
developers who check their code with an automatic memory access checker
such as Purify, Insure++, or valgrind. glibc-audit has been audited and
cleaned up so that reports from the developer's use of a memory access
checker are more likely to be interesting to the developer, with less
"noise" from the C library itself. Also, the r_debug.r_brk protocol has
been enhanced to co-operate with a co-resident auditor.

Changes: The patches were updated to glibc-2.3.3-74. timer_create() no

Security
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Hardened Debian improves Debian GNU/Linux with high security and
hardening features, hardened kernels and packages, DHKP, and other
security related enhancements. It makes systems more difficult to
compromise using common attacks such as race conditions, chroot jail
escapes, and buffer overflows.

Changes: This is a port of the latest 2.4 released patch of the NSA's
SELinux project to Linux 2.4.28. Since it's not a backport of the 2.6
code, but rather a port of the last 2.4.26 backport of the 2.6 code, many
things are deprecated, outdated, and probably obsolete.

subversion adaptor. The CVS history command is now used to speed up
revision checking. A bug where clearcase adaptor reported an error when
calling "mkview" was fixed, as was a bug where the post-build target was
ignored by luntbuild, a bug where the CVS adaptor log command worked
incorrectly with some versions of CVS, and a bug where the relative
reference to other pages in artifacts directory were not displayed
correctly.

[032] - MoSSHe 1.2.7
  by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 21:15

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.

Changes: This release has beel split into three parts: config, loop, and
single check, which helps when testing setups.

[035] - OSSP cfg 0.9.6
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:01

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System
Text Processing

About: OSSP cfg is a ISO-C library for parsing arbitrary C/C++-style
configuration files. A configuration is sequence of directives, each
directive consists of zero or more tokens, and each token can be either a
string or again a complete sequence. This means the configuration syntax
has a recursive structure and allows you to create configurations with
arbitrarily-nested sections. The configuration syntax also provides
complex single/double/balanced quoting of tokens,
hexadecimal/octal/decimal character encodings, character escaping, C/C++
and shell-style comments, etc. The library API allows importing of a
configuration text into an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), traversing the AST,
and optionally exporting the AST again as a configuration text.

Changes: Remaining memory leaks have been plugged by introducing the usual
LOAN/GIFT/COPY argument passing semantics. Optional DMalloc build support
has been fixed. The fixed-size token buffer in scanner has been replaced
with a dynamic buffer to eliminate the old 1024 size limit on tokens.
Non-printable characters in derived error messages are escaped.

About: Pop 3 scan is a full transparent proxy server for POP3 clients. It
runs on a Linux box with iptables (for port redirection). It can be used
to provide POP3 email scanning from the Internet to any internal network,
and is ideal for helping to protect your "Other OS" LAN from harm,
especially when used in conjunction with a firewall and other Internet
proxy servers. It is designed to enable scanning of incoming email
messages for viruses, worms, trojans, spam, and harmful attachments.
Because viewing HTML email can enable a spammer to validate an email
address (via Web bugs), it can also provide HTML stripping.

  by HyperMusic (http://freshmeat.net/users/HyperMusic/)
  Sun, Dec 5th 2004 15:00

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: ReOrganize4L is a tool for rearranging the files on an MP3 stick.
It is based on ReOrganize! for Windows and supports many devices. The main
idea behind it is that most MP3 sticks sort the tracks by date.
ReOrganize4L first copies the tracks to a temporary directory on your hard
drive, then rearranges the order of the files. After this, it copies the
tracks (with the new order) back to the stick.

Changes: A GUI is added. Alphabetical sorting is deactivated (it will be
reactivated when the beta status of this version ends). The language is
now C and C++.

About: XSH (the XML Editing Shell) is a very powerful command-line shell
designed to allow easy navigation and manipulation of XML documents. XSH
may be used either interactively or for off-line XML processing (like

data model, unified type of variables, better integration with Perl,
return values for commands and user-defined subroutines, command flags and
named-parameters (replacing lots of optional positional arguments of XSH1),
true lexical variables, several new commands (edit, edit-string, canonical,

interface. Each picture can be viewed in many different sizes with
resizing created automatically on the fly. It has complete user selectable
language support, and supports password protected albums, hit counters for
albums and images, album info, image captions, gallery overview, different
themes, and a 'Top 10 images' ranking system for each photo album.

Changes: The major new feature for this release is that users can add
comments to the images. The User Comments feature 'Smilies' (emoticons)
and JavaScript code to just click onto the smilies to integrate them into
the text. Users can even edit their comment before saving. It's very easy
to add more smilies of your own or change existing smilies. All new
features are easy to enable/disable for each album separately with the
help of the Album Admin menu. As Album Admin, you can easily delete
selected comments if they are offensive or just unwanted.
