[026] - eGenix mxODBC Zope Database Adapter 1.0.8
  by Marc-Andre Lemburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/lemburg/)
  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 14:07

Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet

About: The eGenix mxODBC Zope Database Adapter (Zope DA) allows you to
easily connect your Zope installation to just about any database
backend. Unlike Zope's ZODBC Zope DA, the mxODBC Zope DA works on
Windows, Linux, and Solaris using the same interface. It implements
thread-safe connection pooling and multiple physical connects per logical
 Zope connection. You can safely run Z SQL Methods in parallel, achieving
much better performance than ZODBC Zope DA or similar database adapters
under heavy load. This makes it ideal for deployment in clusters and
hosting environments where stability and high performance are a priority.

Changes: Zope 2.7.0 and Python 2.3 are fully supported on all platforms:
Windows, Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. You can let the mxODBC Zope DA
return empty strings instead of None for SQL NULL values. This should
simplify porting existing applications to the mxODBC Zope DA. The included
mxODBC 2.1 provides full Unicode support if accessed directly. Using e.g.
the EasySoft ODBC-ODBC bridge, this allows you to connect to any remote
Unicode-aware ODBC backend from any of the supported platforms.

[051] - ipsvd 0.9.7

  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 17:17

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of Internet protocol service daemons for TCP/IP and
UDP/IP. A daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket; for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. The daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections; based on the client's
IP address or hostname, they can run different programs, set a different
environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency limit. On
Linux the network connection optionally can be encrypted using SSL3. ipsvd
can be used to run services usually run by inetd or tcpserver. Normally the
daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or daemontools' supervise.

Changes: This version fixes some minor bugs in the DNS lookup code, the
tcpsvd program, and the code to match peers against a constant database
with check hostname instructions.

Security :: Cryptography

About: OpenSC consists of a SmartCard library that uses any common
transport API (e.g. PC/SC, CT-API, OpenCT) as its backend and applications
that use the library. It has been tested extensively on Finnish Electronic
Identity (FINEID) cards, but a number of other PKCS #15 and ISO 7816
compatible cards work too. Also implemented are a PKCS #11 module (e.g.
for Mozilla Web/email usage), a PAM module, somewhat working OpenSSH
support, an OpenSSL engine, a few basic tools, and a PKCS #15 structure
generation tool for supported cards.

Changes: This release has many bugfixes, and is considered stable.
sslengine has been fixed, and is linked dynamically with libcrypto for
OpenSSL 0.9.7d and later. A small bug in pkcs11-tool is fixed. pkcs11-toll
and pkcs15-crypt are linked with -lcrypto. There is a new driver for the
Estonian ID card. A new card is supported: Oberthur AuthentIC v5. The EID
PAM module now checks permissions, and supports several certificates in
~/.eid/authorized_certificates. Several pkcs15 profiles have been merged
into one with different options.

[085] - Pin Dynamic Instrumentation Tool 2.0.9
  by muth (http://freshmeat.net/users/muth/)
  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 09:25

Software Development
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Pin is an ATOM-like instrumentation tool for Linux executables. It
allows arbitrary code (written in C or C++) to be injected at arbitrary
places in an executable. Unlike Atom, Pin does not perform the
instrumentation statically by rewriting the executable, but rather
dynamically by adding instrumentation while the executable is running.
Currently supported platforms include IA-32, Intel Xscale, and Itanium
processors.

Changes: Many bugs have been fixed, and performance for IA32 and IA32e
kits (a.k.a. EM64T) has been dramatically improved. A new sample tool,
Pinpoints, has been included which produces output compatible with UCSD
Simpoint to find representative slices of program execution for
performance modeling.

[109] - Stunnix Perl Web Server 1.2
  by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 13:47

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server for serving
browser-based applications. It's positioned as a platform for
"cross-platform GUI apps", since it uses a lot of tricks to make
browser-based apps feel like native apps in responsivness: supporting a
FastCGI-like framework for Perl scripts; non-blocking I/O and serving
several requests simultaneously; and advanced caching support. It has
support for PATH_INFO, SSI, CGI, GET/POST; the ability to pack Perl, the
Web server, and the site into an executable file that starts the server
and opens the site in the browser when run; and a toolkit to create
multi-platform autorun CD-ROMs with server, site and Perl on them. It can
be used as a UI for Stunnix obfuscators, e.g. Perl-Obfus.

Changes: Now HTML::Mason-based sites can run unmodifed in a mod_perl
manner (performance-wise). Samples of CD-ROMs with applications
implemented as sites that run locally on Windows/Mac OS X/Linux boxes
without requiring Perl to be installed in the system are provided. Support
for Apache-like <LocationMatch></LocationMatch> sections and support for
Apache-like "actions" (functionality found in mod_actions) and directives
that have same effect as Apache's Action/SetHandler/AddHandler directives
was added.

About: Sylpheed is a GTK+ based, lightweight, and fast email client.
Almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard. It also has many
features such as multiple accounts, POP3/APOP support, thread display, and

internationalized. The messages are managed in the MH format, so you'll be
able to use it together with another mailer that uses the MH format.

Changes: All GnuPG functionality is now handled by the PGP/MIME plugin.
Message encryption is now performed at sending. Encrypted messages can be
saved as clear text. 'Empty trash' has been added to the folder context
menu. The Quotation template's name recognition has been enhanced. The
SIZE parameter has been added to the MAIL command for ESMTP servers. The
TrayIcon plugin indicates when there are new or unread answers to marked
email mesages. The Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Korean, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Slovak, and Spanish

  by Vipul Ved Prakash (http://freshmeat.net/users/hackworth/)
  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 19:08

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Vipul's Razor is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and
filtering network that exploits the broadcast characteristic of spam
distribution to limit its propagation. The primary focus of the system is
to identify and disable an email spam before its injection and processing
is complete. Razor establishes a distributed and constantly updating
catalogue of spam in propagation. This catalogue is used by clients to
filter out known spam.

Changes: Support for country domain canonicalization has been introduced
in the Whiplash signature scheme, promoting correct parsing of domains
like foo.co.uk. This change affords a considerable improvement in
accuracy. Revocation logic has been modified to do signature-only
communications with the server. This is a privacy enhancement. A bug in
"se" computation and a bug in "report by message" have been fixed.
Everyone running Razor should consider upgrading immediately.

[120] - xdesktopwaves 1.2
  by Oliver Hamann (http://freshmeat.net/users/olha/)
  Mon, Dec 6th 2004 13:50

Desktop Environment
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: xdesktopwaves is a cellular automata which sets the background of
an X11 desktop as if it were under water. Window and mouse movements cause
ripples on the desktop like ships on the sea. You can also simulate rain or
a storm stirring up the water.

Changes: This release is more customizable. There is a new option for
increasing the time resolution of event processing. This allows you to
have nicer trails from fast-moved objects. Other new options are available
for positioning the source of light and for adjusting the intensities of
light and sky reflections. Optional support has been added for the window
property _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY. Its purpose is to enable alpha blending
on systems that are running xcompmgr and a suitable window manager, but
this topic still seems to be very experimental.
