[001] - 1060 NetKernel Standard Edition 2.0.1
by Peter Rodgers (http://freshmeat.net/users/1060/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 03:31
Internet
System :: Operating System
About: 1060 NetKernel Standard Edition is an XML Application Server. It
provides a service-oriented operating environment upon which Web
applications and Web services may be built. NKSE is neutral with respect
to Web service technology and provides SOAP 1.1, 1.2, and REST service
hosting. It is based on the 1060 NetKernel modular REST microkernel
architecture. As well as hosting services, applications include
modularized CMS, XML pipeline processing, and XML systems integration.
Changes: This release features the addition of the JMS connection module
which allows NetKernel to be scaled out as a full- featured peer on any
JMS enterprise service bus. A JMS Transport allows the development of
Message-Driven- Services whilst a JMS Accessor allows applications to be
the primary source of JMS messages. Also new in this release are a new
plug-in tool for dynamically configuring the cache settings, and a new
module visualization tool to graphically explore a module's
public/private URI address space. This release also ships some minor
patches and updates.

Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The
related modules are completely independent and require only access to
Python 1.5.2 in your cgi-bin.
Changes: This release adds missing string import to AC_IPN.py.

[004] - Bid Monkey 2.5.1 (Stable)
by pedram (http://freshmeat.net/users/pedram/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 21:44
Internet
Utilities
About: Bid Monkey is a command line and GUI tool that automatically bids
on eBay auctions at the last possible moment ("sniping"). It will run in
the foreground or background, and only requires basic information from the
user, such as username, password, item number, and the maximum bid to
place. Among its more unique features, Bid Monkey abstracts the URL scheme
and regular expressions into a separate "patterns" database, allowing for
easy Web-based updates.
Changes: The custom error handling class 'mx' was renamed to 'monkeyx'
because it was causing a namespace conflict with the popular eGenix mx
libraries and generating errors for some users.

by Jan-Åke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 08:03
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: dvipng makes PNG or GIF graphics from DVI files obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it uses very fast
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. On a fairly low-end laptop, it takes
less than a second to generate 270 one-formula images. Furthermore, it
does not read the postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It
supports PK, VF, PostScript Type1 (via FreeType or t1lib), and TrueType
fonts (via FreeType), color specials, and more.
Changes: This release restores interactive mode, which unfortunately was
unusable in 1.2-1.3, and resolves a few portability problems. dvipng now
builds on ULTRIX and a few other oldish systems.

Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: i18nHTML is a collection of scripts that can be used to write Web
pages that visitors can translate into their respective native languages.
It uses a database to match sentences from the Web page against
translations and defines a set of PHP functions that generate either the
translated HTML sentences or the original (typically English) text with
decorations that allow users to provide translations. It requires that
internationalized pages be written using the functions but does not
constrain the page design in any way. Internationalized pages can be
updated without losing existing translations for sentences that were not
changed.
Changes: The script now automatically creates the required SQL tables. The
code was cleaned up and organized in a way that makes it easier to
integrate into new pages. There were also some minor bugfixes.

Changes: Fluids can now cover objects and interact with them. For exampls,
water rusts iron and slime traps creatures. Weather effects, day and night,
and new NPCs make cities more realistic. Several new monsters and magical
items were added. The player can now issue specific commands to pets, run,
panic, become exhausted, or suffer from nasty diseases like leprosy.
Bodyparts of creatures can become unusable in certain situations. Lists of

[047] - Plash 1.1
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 21:46
Security
About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. This is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run as the user 'nobody' in a chroot jail. No kernel
modifications are required.

Software Development :: Compilers
About: Stunnix VBS-Obfus protects your VBScript code from potential
analysis, study, or reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the VBScript code. It converts the VBScript in raw .vbs
files, or in ASP or HTML pages into a highly obfuscated form, making it
extremely difficult to study, analyse, or reuse, while fully retaining
functionality of the original source code. It optionally adds expiration
and hostname checking. It has a lot of options to control all aspects of
code hiding, and has full support for all syntax constructs. It is
designed to be multi-module aware.
Changes: This release adds support for obfuscating dynamic VBScript inside
string constants that are arguments of "print-like" method calls in
client-side VBScript or in any server-side language. Support for
protecting projects containing an arbitrarily large number of files has
been added. Exceptions for WMI have been added. Support for JSP files has
been improved. Support for undocumented VBScript constructshas been
improved. A lot of other improvements have been introduced.

[067] - Supybot 0.80.0pre3
by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 03:29
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.
Changes: In this release, there were many bugfixes. Numerous
configuration variables were added, FunDB was deprecated (it now has two
individual replacements, Lart and Praise), Quotes was deprecated, and
Infobot was deprecated (in expectation of rewrite for 0.80.0). Several
commands were added, too.

About: uml2svg is an XSLT-based tool for converting XMI-compliant UML
diagrams into SVG.
Changes: This new version is much faster. It also includes an all-in- one
version of the tools, which has the same features. The OutOfMemory
problem should now be solved. All the recursive searches '//*' were
replaced with 'key() ' calls. Memory usage was reduced, as was processing
time. A small bug was fixed in CompartmentSeparator.xsl. There were also
minor text edits.

Games/Entertainment
About: Xconq is a general strategy game system. It is a complete system
that includes all the components: a portable engine, graphical interfaces
for several platforms, multiple AIs, networking for multi-player games,
and an extensive game library. The games in the library range from ancient
civilizations to the far future, from simple to very complicated. Xconq's
forte is turn-based strategy with overhead map views, using a
hexagonally-tiled world. It includes a game design language GDL, which is
a declarative language that lets you define the units, terrain, etc, then
fill in tables defining their interaction. Literally hundreds of different
properties and tables are available to the game designer.
Changes: This release solved some CPU hogging issues, improved the terrain
display and interface, and made a few game updates.

[075] - yagg 1.20
by David Coppit (http://freshmeat.net/users/coppit/)
Fri, Dec 10th 2004 09:46
Software Development
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing
About: yagg, given YACC-like and LEX-like input files, generates a C++
program that generates all strings of a user-specified length. The
YACC-like language grammar file provides the grammar productions for
string generation, along with optional action blocks that can perform
context-sensitive checks in order to limit the generated strings. The
LEX-like terminal generator file provides specifications that instruct the
program how to generate strings for terminals in the grammar. If the
programmer already has a YACC or Bison parser file, he or she only needs
to add "unaction" blocks to allow the recursive generator to undo the side
effects of the action blocks. If the programmer already has a LEX or FLEX
lexer input file, he or she only needs to remove extraneous code and
replace any regular expressions with one of the terminal generator
specifications.
