Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 03:58
Multimedia
Multimedia :: Video
Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion
About: ANDREW's Not a DVD Ripping and Encoding Wizard, but an interactive
wrapper to simplify the use of oggenc, mencoder, and mkv/ogmmerge to
create, from a DVD, one or more Matroska or Ogg Media files containing an
ISO MPEG-4 compliant video track, encoded using the FFmpeg libavcodec or
the XviD codec, one or more AC-3 or Vorbis audio tracks, and a chapters
index.
Changes: In this version, the encoding of NTSC DVDs now works. On some
systems, wrong decimal roundings no longer cause various problems, and
current, destination, and DVD source directories containing spaces in
their name no longer cause various problems. Resolution optimization now
starts properly. Chapters' names in the first part of a movie now start
from 1.

[004] - bash programmable completion 20050103 (Stable)
by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 23:53
System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities
About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.
Changes: This release features a complete rewrite of openssl(1)
completion. Completion was implemented for pkg-config, ps2pdf, and
mkinitrd. make completion was enhanced with alternate Makefile paths.
mount completion now functions better under Cygwin. Numerous wireless
tools improvements were made and cvs(1) completion fixes were applied.
Numerous other small improvements were also made.

Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 10:35
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: Berkeley DB (libdb) is a programmatic toolkit that provides
embedded database support for both traditional and client/server
applications. It includes b+tree, queue, extended linear hashing, fixed,
and variable-length record access methods, transactions, locking, logging,
shared memory caching, database recovery, and replication for highly
available systems. DB supports C, C++, Java, PHP, and Perl APIs. It is
available for a wide variety of UNIX platforms as well as Windows XP,
Windows NT, and Windows '95 (MSVC 6 and 7).
Changes: Fixes were made to some areas of replication, and other minor
cleanups and fixes were made. All those using 4.3.21 replication features
should update to the 4.3.27 release.

by Brian Rhodes (http://freshmeat.net/users/bgr/)
Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 03:26
About: BW Acct is a bandwidth accounting and reporting application. It is
implemented as a C daemon which manages accounting rules in an
iptables/netfilter firewall on the Linux 2.4 kernel. Support for multiple
RDBMS is included, and a plugin architecture is provided for extending BW
Acct to support other databases. BW Acct can provide accurate accounting
of just about any firewall rule you can imagine.
Changes: This version adds support to fork and run in the background,
support for connmark match/target and cmd_owner matching from netfilter
patch-o-matic to allow accounting on services which do not have their own
IP address and may use secondary ports for data connections. There is a
new PHP Web interface with improved administration interface for creating
and managing firewall rules. There is also support for the cleanup of
accounting rules in filter table.

[015] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.1.23
by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 13:25
Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.
Changes: This release which fixes two security vulnerabilities. It also
contains other minor bug and documentation fixes that are not security
related.

[016] - Conary 0.12.2
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 13:28
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: For installing, updating, erasing, and querying, the ability to
specify flavors on the command line has been added. For updating, flavor
affinity has been added: when you update a trove, conary will try to pick
from available flavors the best match relative to what you already had
installed. Many smaller fixes, mostly relevant to recent work with
flavors. A 0.12.2 client will require at least 0.12.2 repositories, due to
protocol changes. 0.12.1 and 0.12.0 clients will still work with a 0.12.2
repository.

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than

About: The wmctrl program is a command line tool to interact with an
EWMH/NetWM-compatible X Window Manager. It provides command line access to
almost all the features defined in the EWMH specification. It's possible

The command line access makes it easy to automate these tasks and execute
them from any application that is able to run a command in response to
some event.

by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)
Mon, Jan 3rd 2005 09:40
Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Filesystems
About: The Zero Install system removes the need to install software or
libraries by running all programs from a network filesystem. The
filesystem in question is the Internet as a whole, with an aggressive
caching system to make it as fast as (or faster than) traditional systems
such as Debian's APT repository, and to allow for offline use. It doesn't
require any central authority to maintain it, and allows users to run
software without needing a root password.
