[017] - Electric Fence 2.4.11
by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
Tue, Jan 4th 2005 05:38
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: Electric Fence (efence) stops your program on the exact instruction
that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer. GDB will then
display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works by using the
virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of each buffer
- touch that, and your program stops. Catch all of those formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs that have been bothering you for years.
Changes: Broken signal handling was fixed in the confidence test program
eftest. The second SIGSEGV signal stopped getting caught from the signal
handler. setjmp/longjmp was changed to sigsetjmp/siglongjmp, and calls to
sigprocmask were added to unblock further signals.

sent to the server until you call the display() method. It attempts to
fully support HTML 4.x and XHTML. Helper methods are provided to do
cookies, URI encoding, etc. There is a Form processing module which will
generate the form, gather the input, and then validate the input,
re-displaying the form if errors are encountered with the invalid entries
marked as such.

About: The HTMLObject is a set of Perl modules that provides the ability
to create Dynamic HTML documents (Framesets, DHTML, etc.). You can
generate your code without having to do cookies first, then JavaScript,
then the body. As long as the content is output in the correct order, you
can generate JavaScript or cookies at any point since the output is not
sent to the server until you call the display() method.
Changes: Updated to cover the HTMLObject 2.25 release. An onbeforeunload
handler has been added to the main frameset to allow users to see it in
action and to know if their browser supports that feature.

[030] - i18nHTML 0.0.2
by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
Tue, Jan 4th 2005 10:55
Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: i18nHTML is a collection of scripts that can be used to write Web
pages that visitors can translate into their respective native languages.
It uses a database to match sentences from the Web page against
translations and defines a set of PHP functions that generate either the
translated HTML sentences or the original (typically English) text with
decorations that allow users to provide translations. It requires that
internationalized pages be written using the functions but does not
constrain the page design in any way. Internationalized pages can be
updated without losing existing translations for sentences that were not
changed.
Changes: This release comes with data to set up an initial database that
contains translations for the i18nHTML pages themselves, making it easier
to bootstrap the system. This version also works without register_globals.
More convenience functions were added. The HTML was cleaned up and the
documentation was expanded.

About: VisMon provides a framework for graphical application monitoring,

network from any location. This is achieved by installing a single VisMon
Agent on each server node, which can be controlled and monitored by one or
more VisMon Explorer GUIs from the local LAN or Internet.

[057] - Plash 1.4
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Tue, Jan 4th 2005 04:26
Security
About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.
Changes: An object-capability protocol was implemented for use over
sockets. This is now used as an additional layer in the communication
between client and server. In future it will provide a way for
applications to construct filesystems on the server.

the colour of a pixel, reading in a whole PNG file (great for image
analysis), plotting and reading in HSV colourspace, and many others that
might come in handy.

About: Seismic Toolkit is a tool for processing and displaying seismic
signal data in a graphical interface. It reads seismic signals in SAC
format, and provides a number of user operations, such as zooming,
filtering, spectral analysis, polarisation analysis, time-frequency
representation, Hilbert transform, and singular value decomposition.
Changes: This version adds instantaneous azimuth and incidence
computation (useful for non-centered variables), an export to ASCII
function in current signal and time-frequency menu, and functions in
utilities programs (GMT_plot) for plotting signal with GMT (Generic
Mapping Tool). The utilities use now the same environment variables as
STK, which have also been renamed to have a prefix (STK).

[070] - sysstat 5.1.4
by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
Tue, Jan 4th 2005 14:27
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.
Changes: NFS client and server statistics added to sar. sar -d now only
reads stats for devices (and not partitions). Display routines from sadf
have been merged, so that -ppc and -db always output the same values. sadf
has been updated (handles NFS stats and prints a data file header).
MAX_BLKDEV is defined in ioconf.h if it is non-existent in linux/major.h.
