[001] - Another File Integrity Checker 2.6-1
  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 09:09

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: The history file and the archive directory are now created if
they don't exist. The --list option has been rewritten to search the
matching rule and warn if it's not found.

  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 18:40

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: AudioMove is a handy GUI-based batch audio file converter/ copier
program. It can convert various audio file formats to WAV, AIFF, or LCS
format (using libsndfile), and do high- quality sample-rate conversion at
the same time (using libsamplerate). It is multi-threaded for maximum
throughput, can handle thousands of files per batch, does recursive
directory scans, and runs under Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Changes: This release adds some additional output sampling rate options
(11kHz, 88.2kHz, 192kHz, etc.)

[005] - C++ ResourcePool 0.99.07
  by mws (http://freshmeat.net/users/mws/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 09:17

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: "Connect Strings" have been introduced for database resources.
This makes it possible to specify all required logon data with a single
string. Using "Connect Strings" slightly improves portability between
different database vendors.

[012] - Dump/Restore 0.4b38
  by Stelian Pop (http://freshmeat.net/users/spop/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 09:16

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Filesystems

About: The dump package contains both dump and restore. Dump examines
files in a filesystem, determines which ones need to be backed up, and
copies those files to a specified disk, tape or other storage medium. The
restore command performs the inverse function of dump; it can restore a
full backup of a filesystem. Subsequent incremental backups can then be
layered on top of the full backup. Single files and directory subtrees may
also be restored from full or partial backups.

Changes: This release features several small bugfixes and a number of
performance enhancements. The next version of dump/restore will feature
EA/ACL support, and there is already a beta patch implementing this. All
users of EA/ACLs are welcomed to test this patch and report back.

[018] - Gled 1.2.4
  by Matevz Tadel (http://freshmeat.net/users/osschar/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 10:17

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Gled is an implementation of a hierarchic server/client model
written in C++, having an outside form of an object oriented framework.
The master server exposes its object space to its first-level clients,
which in turn provide mirroring facilities to second-level clients and
also export their own object spaces. Each client therefore plays a role of
a client, a proxy, and a server. Infrastructure for propagation and
broadcasting of method invocation requests is provided and is general
enough to allow for an efficient access control. Synchronization of object
spaces is achieved via streaming of object graphs and a time-ordered
delivery of method invocation requests. Objects can acquire their own
threads to perform different tasks such as computation, data acquisition &
analysis or dynamic visualization. The obtained results can be pushed to
other computing nodes or storage devices. As threads are spawned and
controlled by standard method invocation requests, schedulers & job
control mechanisms spawning across a whole Gled cluster can easily be
implemented. On viewer level, Gled features automatically generated GUI
widgets (using FLTK) and a sophisticated 3D rendering infrastructure
(OpenGL).

Changes: Method invocation requests (Gled's RPC) can now execute in a
dedicated thread (excellent for starting longer computations, remote
queries, and/or animations). Some improvements have been introduced in the
class catalogue infrastructure, build system (64-bit compilation), and
auto-generated HTML documentation. Many new features and eye candy have
been added to the GL rendering infrastructure: scaling control across
parent-child boundaries, better texture handling, improved object picking,
and more. A new library-set RootGeo (an interface to ROOT geometry
description) has been introduced.

[019] - GNU ddrescue 0.9 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 09:13

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: Ddrescue is now part of the GNU project. A configure script and
info file have been added. Two small bugs have been corrected. A new
option "binary-prefixes" has been added to show binary multipliers in
numbers (SI prefixes are used by default). Numbers are now accepted with
decimal (SI) or binary multipliers. "badblocks file" has been renamed to
"logfile". The log file is now saved if max_errors is exceeded.

applied to the collection of objects and the matching set returned,
ordered and grouped. It should be used when a RDBMS is either too
heavyweight or too  impractical.

Changes: DISTINCT is now supported on the SELECT clause. Regular
expressions are now supported via functions. New functions provided: rgrep
and regexp. Several filters have been created for use in Log4J,
JFileChooser, and listing files. The manual has been updated with a list

About: Kenosis is a fully-distributed p2p RPC system built on top of
XMLRPC. Nodes are automatically connected to each other via a
Kademlia-style network, and can route RPC requests efficiently to any
online node. It is well-tested and reliable.

Changes: This release fixes the CPU usage during a find nodes operation.
It imports the public API into Kenosis directly so that there is no need
to import address or node now. The doc strings on some pieces of code
were improved. Nodes automatically bootstrap by default. A node now takes

Utilities

About: Krename is a very powerful batch file renamer for KDE3 which can
rename a list of files based on a set of expressions. It can copy/move the
files to another directory or simply rename the input files. Krename
supports many conversion operations, including conversion of a filename to
lowercase or to uppercase, conversion of the first letter of every word to
uppercase, adding numbers to filenames, finding and replacing parts of the
filename, and many more. It can also change access and modification dates,
permissions, and file ownership.

Changes: This release contains updated translations for many languages.
KRename is now more responsive when renaming large numbers of files. The
instant undo function now works more reliably and date formating is now
easier, as you can specify the date format after a semi colon for certain
tokens: [date;yyyy-MM-dd]. Sorting files is now possible by using a number
in the filename.

[031] - LanguageSys 1.0.2
  by Florian Breit (http://freshmeat.net/users/emcee/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 09:19

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: LanguageSys is meant to internationalize your applications. It
handles the access to language files, which are based on an INI style. It
is possible to precompile the language files to increase the speed of
processing. This system is focused on being highly object-oriented, so it
makes the language aliases aviable as member variables of the own class.
It contains a system to fetch a list of all the available languages by a
given directory where the language files are located. A distinction of
languages is drawn as RFC1766 recommends. Examples, documentation, and a
simple script to precompile your language files are included.

Changes: Some changes have been made to the precompiling mechanism of
LanguageSys, so LanguageSys now uses serialized arrays for precompiling to
increase the processing speed. There is now an example file of a
precompiled language file available, and the docs have been updated. If
you are using precompiled language files, please view the section
"Migration" in the docs. Other features such as the precompiling mechanism
are not affected by this release.

[052] - Plash 1.5
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 10:17

Security

About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.

Changes: Recursive read-only directories are now supported, and the shell
can pass objects as read-only. It is now possible for processes to create
their own filesystems, and there are the beginnings of an API for doing
this. As an example, a "chroot" program is provided. (Normally, use of
chroot is restricted to root, because it is insecure in the presence of
the setuid executables. chroot is safe under Plash, however, because it
doesn't provide setuid; another mechanism will be provided instead.)

[073] - Zeus Java Swing Components Library 1.05

  Fri, Jan 7th 2005 05:05

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Zeus Java Swing Components Library provides useful Swing
components for easier GUI development. It uses only standard components to
create widgets, and uses standard patterns wherever possible. The widgets
include JConsole, a console replacement; JSplash, a splash screen
implementation; TableSorter, which provides sorting for JTable using the
table's headers; OutLookToolBar, which provides the mouse over looks of
Microsoft Outlook toolbar buttons on a simple JToolBar; WindowManager,
which provides almost any functionality you need to manage all
JInternalFrames within a JDesktop; and much more.

Changes: This release adds a new component, SingleAppInstance, which
provides a simple solution to the multiple application instances problem.
It creates and locks a file within the startup directory so if anyone is
to execute the application again the second onInit() call fails with a
message. You can also customize the way SingleAppInstance informs the
user, e.g via JOptionPane popup window or stderr. Finally, you can
easily translate the popup messages without modifing any code.
