  by Mikhael Goikhman (http://freshmeat.net/users/migo1/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 20:57

Software Development
Software Development :: Version Control

About: arch is a modern replacement for CVS, specifically designed for the
distributed development needs of open source projects. It has uniquely good
support for development on branches (especially good merging tools),
distributed repositories (every developer can have branches in their own
repository), changeset-oriented project management (arch commits changes
to multiple files at once), and, of course, file and directory renaming.

Changes: This release contains a number of bugfixes and feature
enhancements. Important changes include reverting the 1k tagline boundary
error to a warning, allowing old archives to continue to be accessed,
fixing a regression in get- changeset, fixing the "one-way" star-merge
bug, and once more recognizing patch logs from archives beginning with a
digit.

  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 08:30

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Systems Administration

About: Bastard is virtual server oriented patchset, containing essential
elements for building virtual server container machines. It includes a
CTX-VS patch, squashfs for creating a small template server, lufs and bme
for easily creating overlayed filesystems on top of the template, and
honeynet- inspired extensions to enhance monitoring of hosted servers. It
also includes VPN extensions like OpenSWAN, MPPE, and CIPE to enable
direct access to hosted virtual servers in situations where IPs are
scarce.

Changes: Openswan 1.x was replaced with 2.3.x. This release is thus
incompatible with previous releases, and requires minor changes in
userspace ipsec configuration files. Colored Kernel Output (CKO) was
introduced.

[018] - Conary 0.12.4
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 21:12

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Troves can have multiple instruction set flavors now, supporting
multilib troves. To make flavor strings work sensibly with multiple
instruction sets, flavor strings have been inverted so that the use:
portion comes first, and all the is: portions follow. More arch flags for
x86 and x86_64 are now set, and the arch flags have a hierarchical
arrangement that facilitates flavor scoring.

  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 00:44

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Conspy allows a (possibly remote) user to see what is displayed on
a Linux virtual console, and to send keystrokes to it. It only known to
work with Linux. It is rather like VNC, but where VNC takes control of a
GUI, conspy takes control of a text-mode virtual console. Unlike VNC,
conspy does not require a server to be installed prior to being used.

Changes: The program now unblocks all signals when exiting when killed by
a signal. The destination tty is now closed and re-opened every time a key
is pressed to fix errors that occasionally occured when the user logged in.
devfs device names (/dev/ttyX -> /dev/vc/X and /dev/vcsaX -> /dev/vcc/aX)
are now supported. A Debian package was created.

About: GNU Aspell is a spell checker designed to eventually replace
Ispell. It can either be used as a library or as an independent spell
checker. Its main feature is that it does a superior job of suggesting
possible replacements for a misspelled word than just about any other
spell checker out there for the English language. Unlike Ispell, Aspell
can also easily check documents in UTF-8 without having to use a special
dictionary. Aspell will also do its best to respect the current locale
setting. Other advantages over Ispell include support for using multiple
dictionaries at once and intelligently handling personal dictionaries when
more than one Aspell process is open at once.

[037] - gpgdir 0.9.2
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 07:58

Security :: Cryptography

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.

Changes: Preservation of file mtime and atime values was added, but may be
disabled with the --no-preserve-times option. Testing encryption and
decryption of a dummy file was added by default for both encrypt and
decrypt modes, and may be disabled with --skip-test. The --test-mode
switch was added to run the encrypt to decrypt test and exit. Unnecessary
compression options were removed. get_homedir() was updated to reference
the HOME environment variable if the /etc/passwd file does not exist (such
as on Mac OS X). The --verbose mode was added.

[051] - Linux Replicated High Availability Manager 0.7.6
  by Simon Edwards (http://freshmeat.net/users/bongo44/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 14:53

  by David Eklund (http://freshmeat.net/users/auknight/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 21:25

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: Luau provides a backbone for disseminating software updates
throughout a software project's userbase. It differs from other
autoupdate solutions (eg. apt, Red Hat Network) in that it works on a
decentralized basis: developers provide a "Luau Repository" file
describing all currently available packages and updates which is then
downloaded and interpreted by the client. It is also more flexible in that
individual developers can distribute not only software updates but messages
throughout the userbase, which can be used to inform users of important
security updates, new software roadmaps, or anything else the developer
thinks is important for users of the software package. Also provided is an
X front-end ('luau-x') and a console-based front-end ('luau') that allow
the user to check for and download or install updates for all supported
software.

Changes: This is an incremental release, with just a few bugfixes and
preliminary support for the coming updates to the XML format.
Specifically, systems without the GNU extension function
get_current_dir_name are now provided a replacement function to support
them. XML comments are now recognized and ignored. Finally, unrecognized
XML tags now result in a debugging message rather than an error message.
The public API has not changed.

yes, that allow users to hide the author in sites with multiple authors,
where the site admin don't want to show author names, or where author
name is irrelevant, as when site is a collection of public information.

[057] - Metabase 2005.01.05
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 00:46

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Metabase consists of a set of PHP classes to access and manage
databases using an API that assures DBMS independence. It supports MySQL,
PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft Access, ODBC,
Interbase, Informix, MiniSQL, and SQLite flat file databases. There is a
function library that interfaces with DBMS specific driver classes, a
parser class that interperts a custom XML format used to describe database
schemas, and a manager class that installs database schema objects (tables,
indexes, sequences) using the Metabase API. The manager class is also able
to upgrade a previously installed database to a new schema without
affecting that data that was stored since the database was installed or
was upgraded for the last time. There is also schema reverse engineering
support to help migrate database-specific applications and start using
Metabase.

Changes: A workaround was added to the MySQL driver class to avoid a bug
in the PHP mysql_query function that under certain circumstances may
return a true value instead of a valid result set handle when executing
SQL SELECT queries that fail.

About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) allows
the user to construct regular expressions and test them against input data
by executing any of a variety of search programs, editors, and programming
languages that make use of regular expressions. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. For each
program, a palette showing the available regular expression syntax is
provided. Selections from the palette may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be added to the
palette via an initialization file. As long as the underlying program
supports Unicode, UTF-8 Unicode is allowed in both test data and regular
expressions.

Changes: This version added support for PHP (ereg, multibyte extensions,

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: SLglade is a S-Lang module that provides S-Lang bindings for the
libglade library. Used in conjunction with SLgtk, it allows users to
design a GUI with Glade (a GTK+ user interface builder), save the
interface description in a Glade XML file, and then generate the S-Lang
script's graphical interface directly from the XML at runtime.

[088] - SmokePing 1.36 (Stable)
  by Tobias Oetiker (http://freshmeat.net/users/oetiker/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 20:49

System :: Benchmark
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: SmokePing is a network latency monitor which works in a way that is
similar to MRTG. It measures network latency to a configurable set of
destinations on the network, and displays its findings in easy-to-read Web
pages. SmokePing has special support for monitoring hosts with dynamic IP
addresses. SmokePing uses RRDtool as its logging and graphing back-end,
making the system very efficient. The presentation of the data on the Web
is done through a CGI which creates graphs on demand.

Changes: This release features better logging capabilities, the ability to
 use the same probe several times with different settings, the ability to
use probe-specific step time, high-level forking code that spawns several
instances of smokeping which then work in parallel for greater performance
and flexibility, a revisited and fixed RemoteFPing probe, and the setting
of random launch time on by default, to make sure that target sites do
not get hit by unreasonable probing intensities if several smokeping
instances monitor the same target.

[094] - The Life of a Geek 1.0stable (Stable)
  by core_dump (http://freshmeat.net/users/core_dump_0/)
  Thu, Jan 6th 2005 10:47

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek)
must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on the
Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your box.
Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to sleep,
you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a month-long
college course and improve your education, but remember that paying
attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack. Find a
quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and grocery
stores, but remember again that time away from your computer leaves it
open to attack. Viruses may also appear on your computer, weakening your
computer's health points regularly until cleaned.

Changes: The previous release wouldn't compile under FreeBSD or older
Linux versions due to a simple error. There are new install instructions
for DOS/DJGPP. Support has been added for DOS/DJGPP, which was used to
compile the PC binaries. Makefile, wininst.sh, and DOSINST.BAT have been
updated to copy documentation. CHANGELOG/CHANGELOG.txt has been renamed
CHANGES/CHANGES.txt and LGFILESYNTAX/LGFILESYNTAX.txt renamed
LGFILES/LGFILES.txt for DOS compatibility.
