Internet :: Proxy Servers
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The Antinat SOCKS Server is a multi-threaded, scalable SOCKS
server with a client library for writing proxy-based applications. It
supports SOCKS 4, SOCKS 5, authentication, firewalling, UDP, server
chaining, and name resolution.

Changes: Completely rewritten in C. The LibDS dependency has been removed.
Support for server chaining, local Win32 authentication, and finer-grained
throttling have been added. The client library documentation is complete.
Many client-library related bugs have been fixed, and support has been
added for the library to be compiled as a DLL. The Win32 build process has
been streamlined using AutoWin.

[003] - Asymptote 0.56
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Sun, Jan 9th 2005 19:59

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: This release adds PostScript tiling patterns and axial/radial
shading of filled regions, linecap and linejoin pen specifiers, an
interface to the LaTeX minipage command, secondary linear graph axes, and
a means to extract pen color components. The label subsystem was revamped
to properly account for depth in its alignment and bounding box
calculations. Various scaling and comma-separated input bugs were also
fixed. Diagnostic messages were improved, and the documentation was
updated with new examples.

System :: Benchmark
System :: Boot

About: Bootchart is a tool for performance analysis and visualization of
the GNU/Linux boot process. Resource utilization data and process
information are collected during the boot process, and can later be
displayed in a PNG, SVG, or EPS encoded chart. Analyzing the chart will
help in finding opportunities for optimization.

Changes: This release adds EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) rendering
support. The common package was also refactored, making it easier to
introduce new log file parsers.

[006] - Bubbling Load Monitor Applet 2.0.3 (Gnome 2)
  by Walles (http://freshmeat.net/users/walles/)
  Sun, Jan 9th 2005 05:05

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: The Bubbling Load Monitor (or "Bubblemon" for short) is a system
load monitor for the GNOME panel. It looks like a vial containing water.
The water level indicates how much (electronic) memory is in use. The
color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used. The amount of
bubbles reflects the system CPU load. A message in a bottle indicates
there is unread mail. A reed-like graph shows network load.

Changes: Crashes when system time moves backwards (happens on systems
with an NTP daemon running) have been fixed. The network load graph
doesn't look like a moving blob any more.

[022] - Gourmet Recipe Manager 0.7.0
  by tom (http://freshmeat.net/users/Thomas_Hinkle/)
  Sun, Jan 9th 2005 20:01

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Gourmet Recipe Manager is a simple but powerful recipe managing
application that is intended for the GNOME desktop environment, but

enhancements, including newly added mastercook XML import. When
multiplying recipes, it changes units for readability (so that 1 TBS * 1/2
= 1 1/2 tsp.). The Recipe Card view features a new preferences dialog to
remove elements of the UI (if, for example, you never rate your recipes).
Finally, this release runs on Windows for the first time (though printing
on Windows is not yet supported). The Debian package now installs gourmet
into /usr/share/gourmet instead of site-packages.

[030] - jsgal 0.60
  by Andreas S. Krebs (http://freshmeat.net/users/krebs/)
  Sun, Jan 9th 2005 06:14

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than
generating the gallery pages on a server using scripts, it is implemented
in Javascript and DHTML and generates the pages in the client's browser.
No offline generation of the Web pages is required; only a list of images
has to be maintained, which allows easy updating and extending of
galleries. This allows you to host dynamic galleries on servers without
scripting support, or on local filesystems (e.g. CD-ROMs).

Changes: Support for dynamic calculating rows and columns of galleries was
added. Perl script for adding images to a gallery were added.

[031] - KAlarm 1.2.4 (KDE 3)
  by David Jarvie (http://freshmeat.net/users/djar/)
  Sun, Jan 9th 2005 09:00

About: KAlarm lets you configure personal messages to be displayed,
commands to be executed, or emails to be sent, at scheduled times. It
allows you to choose the message font and color, how often to repeat,
whether to display an advance reminder, whether to play a sound when the
message is displayed, and whether to cancel the alarm if it can't be
triggered on time (e.g. if you are logged out at the time). As well as
using the graphical interface to configure alarms, you can use the command
line, and there is a DCOP interface for other applications.

Changes: Options for command alarms were added to specify a script to
execute rather than a command line, and to execute in a terminal window.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want and use a complex query
language with full boolean syntax and proximity operators, which is much
more elaborate than languages provided by Google, Altavista, etc. It can
be fed any sources, since its abstraction layer manages the search results
and their meta tags in a uniform way. In conjunction with the local process
scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and
replay them later automatically: new results are sent through email in
real time.

Changes: Some testing code has been removed from the engine; it prevented
some accounts from being checked correctly when using Magellan as an

lists. All classes support two methods of handling peak list and spectrum
data: in-memory or stream. The goal of this framework is to support all
the popular MS and MSMS data formats, and to eliminate any time or effort
involved in figuring out how to read and write peak list or spectrum
files.

Changes: Read and write support was added for DTA, PKL, and MGF. Full
support is not yet implemented for all the MGF meta-information. This
release also includes a format FAQ section for the IO framework.

About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
for personal computers.

Changes: New joystick axis selection allows you to look around in the 3D
