  by Peter Rodgers (http://freshmeat.net/users/1060/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 03:56

Internet
System :: Operating System

About: 1060 NetKernel Standard Edition is an Application Server that
provides a unique service-oriented abstraction which is a convergence of
the core ideas of the Web and Unix. NKSE is a general purpose modular
infrastructure which comes with powerful and simple XML processing tools.
It may be used for SOAP 1.1, 1.2, and REST Web-Services, JMS MOM, XML
pipeline processing, general systems integration, or as a Web-application
server. The NetKernel abstraction simplifies complexity and thus increases
the scope and potential of the systems built upon it.

Changes: This release was refactored to provide an easy learning curve
with new introductory documentation and hands-on tutorials. A number of
enhancements were made to the management tools.

[004] - AOLserver 4.0.10
  by Dossy Shiobara (http://freshmeat.net/users/dossy/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 19:49

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: AOLserver is a multithreaded, Tcl-enabled, massively scalable and
extensible Web server tuned for large scale, dynamic Web sites. It
includes complete database integration, dynamic page scripting, and an
open, extensible architecture.

Changes: This release adds two enhancements and one API change. The major
enhancement is the adding of configurable transparent gzip compression of
HTTP responses from ADP pages. The minor enhancement is the addition of a
numeric version #define to aid conditional compilation of modules that
require specific AOLserver versions or must be compiled differently
depending on the version. Ns_Compress() has been renamed to
Ns_CompressGzip() in anticipation of other algorithms which will be
supported.

[006] - ARSC Really Simple Chat 3.0
  by Manuel Kiessling (http://freshmeat.net/users/pgod/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 03:54

Communications :: Chat

About: ARSC Really Simple Chat is a Web chat system that uses PHP and
MySQL. It works with every browser in existence, even text-based ones, and
it uses the server push technique or, if possible, its own socket server.
It is very simple to install and use ARSC. It includes some important
features, such as operators, kick-ing, whispering, and more. Multiple
rooms and different languages are available. To run ARSC on your site, you
need a Web server that understands PHP, and can connect to a MySQL
database.

Changes: This release fixed a bug that caused the sha1() wrapper function
to return an incorrect value, rendering the admin interface useless if the
system was used with versions of PHP prior to 4.3.0. A bug that broke the
functionality for adding a new user via the admin interface was also
fixed. A Turkish language file was added.

Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)

About: Electronic Design Automation - Index is a system that can be used
in the electronic world to keep track of your: Schematic, Printed Circuit
Board, Front Plate, and Programmable Logic Unit numbers. This is very
useful when you have drawn many electronic schematics and PCBs in an EDA
program such as Eagle, gEDA, Protel, or Orcad. It's also useful if you've
created a front plate layout in an image editor such as GIMP, Corel Draw,
or Photoshop.

Changes: A delete item / project function has been added, and the
documentation has been updated. There is also a minor PHP cleanup.

[024] - Enchant 1.1.5
  by Sir Logic (http://freshmeat.net/users/danwillett/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 00:08

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Enchant is a cross-platform abstract layer for spell-checking. It
is a meta spell-checking framework. It recognizes that different
languages often require radically different tools and alogrithms to
spell-check and correct. It also takes into account that systems often
have a radical host of spell- checking software installed. It provides a
standard C API/ABI for all of its backends, while allowing multiple
backends to be loaded and used at once.

Changes: This version fixed bugs and added better Mac OS X integration.

[026] - EZFB Linux Frame Buffer API 9.04
  by James Lehman (http://freshmeat.net/users/JamesLehman/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 20:01

Artistic Software
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling

About: EZFB is a polymorphic, object oriented Linux frame buffer API
written in C, designed to adapt at run time to control any properly
configured Linux frame buffer video system. It offers independent,
simultaneous control of multiple video cards within a single system,
exceptional control of colors, the ability to display all or portions of
bitmap files anywhere on the screen, automatic color depth conversion, the
ability to capture to bitmap files, an 8x8 bitmapped font, routines to draw
points, lines, outlined and filled rectangles, signal trapping for
automatic screen clean-up at process termination, and much more. The
demonstration applications include a bitmap viewer, screen capture
utility, screen saver, and a touch screen calibration utility and an
application for generating, viewing, transforming, and saving files
according to The International Laser Display Association's ILDA file
format.

Changes: This release fixes lots of bugs. It cleans up the entire project
namespace by changing the names of many functions, macros, variables, and
even data types. It splits bmp_clone_ezfb function into
bmp_clone_ezfb_virtual and bmp_clone_ezfb_screen, and fixes
ezfb_set_xy_offsets so that it does not corrupt palette display. The name
of the ild2fb project was changed to laserboy, which also had extensive
changes made to it. A global palette selection was added. Recolor effects
were fixed.

[028] - Galapagos 0.1.3
  by Mathias Broxvall (http://freshmeat.net/users/mbrx/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 04:07

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Galapagos is a fairly detail artificial life project in which a
number of creatures are simulated over time. The simulation follows a
number of laws which are inspired by, although not replicating, the
standard laws of nature. By implementing mutations and crossovers and
the implicit natural selection in the simulation, the overall result is
an evolution of the creatures in which new breeds of creatures
fullfilling different ecological niches arise.

Changes: The system works but is not well documented and only a few
features are supported in the current universe.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 11:13

Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Jetrix is a TetriNET server designed for maximum scalability,
extensibility, and ease of use. It features a Web-based administration
console and a simple API to let developers add custom commands or change
the channels' behavior with little knowledge of the server's inner
functioning. The ambitious goal of this project is to create the ideal
platform for TetriNET programmers.

Changes: This release includes many new features. On the player side there
is now a sudden death mode, the ability to create channels, a new channel
with custom settings, support for idle channels, and a better BPM counter.
On the administrator side, the Web administration console is now mostly
functional, changes in the configuration are saved to the disk, ghost
connections are now automatically removed, and the server IP is
automatically published on the server lists at tetrinet.org and tfast.org.
For developers, writing a command is now easier and a new service API
allows you to run background tasks.

Lindenmayer Systems, Iterated Function Systems, Linear Cellular Automata,
Voroni diagrams, and layered textures or isosurfaces rendered by the
Persistence of Vision raytracer.

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: NSA Security-enhanced Linux is a set of patches to the Linux kernel
and some utilities to incorporate a strong, flexible mandatory access
control architecture into the major subsystems of the kernel. It provides
a mechanism to enforce the separation of information based on
confidentiality and integrity requirements, which allows threats of
tampering and bypassing of application security mechanisms to be addressed
and enables the confinement of damage that can be caused by malicious or
flawed applications. It includes a set of sample security policy
configuration files designed to meet common, general-purpose security
goals.

Changes: This release is based on Linux 2.6.10, but the current SELinux
patch for the kernel includes a number of changes merged after 2.6.10 was
released, including the AVC scalability work, AVC API and statistics
support, dynamic context transition support, and enhanced controls over
executable mappings. The checkpolicy policy compiler has been updated to
order node context entries and to support supplementary type attribute
declarations. Several improvements to libselinux, policycoreutils, and

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: OSCache is a high performance J2EE caching solution that can cache
portions of JSP pages, entire HTTP responses (including dynamically
generated images), and arbitrary Java objects. It can provide your J2EE
application with huge performance gains and graceful error tolerance
(e.g., in the event of a DB failure, cached content is served).

Changes: This release updates the jgroups jar and configuration, updates
the documentation, adds a HashDiskPersistenceListner that hashes file
names in order to eliminate nasty characters and overly long names, and
adds a property, cache.persistence.overflow.only, that allows cache

[071] - Plash 1.6
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 09:05

Security

About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.

Changes: The shell now allows processes to be started with existing files
and directories attached to arbitrary points in the filesystem tree. The
new argument syntax is "PATHNAME = EXPR", and the expression "F PATHNAME"
returns the object at the given pathname. For example, you can run gcc
with a different /tmp directory using "gcc args... + /tmp=(F ~/new-tmp)".

[089] - Supybot 0.80.0
  by jamessan (http://freshmeat.net/users/jamessan/)
  Tue, Jan 18th 2005 06:08

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.

Changes: This version adds some more languages to the Babelfish plugin,
fixes a bug in Ebay's auction command, updates RSS.rss to obey
supybot.reply.oneToOne, and fixes a bug in registry.py.
