[001] - abcm2ps 4.8.7 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 02:19
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: Several improvements in tune layout were implemented. The PS
function 'gcshow' (for guitar chords) can be changed without altering text
annotations.

[004] - Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module 1.10
by Nuclear Elephant (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 15:20
Security
About: The Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module is a module for both Apache
1.3 and 2.0 that provides functionality for detecting and fighting off DoS
attacks and brute force attacks. It does this by adding addresses to a
10-second '403 List' and rejecting rapidly repeated requests for the same
URL from the same addresses, using an internal hash table, on a per-child
basis. This module can be configured to talk to ipchains, ipfilter, or any
other tool designed to push the attack out to the network layer, and
provides email notification in the event of an attack.
Changes: This release adds an alternative tempdir path option to prevent
an empty file race condition.

[008] - Ascii2Binary 2.1
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 17:23
Utilities
About: Ascii2Binary reads input consisting of textual representations of
numbers separated by whitespace and produces as output the binary
equivalents. The type and size/precision of the binary output is selected
using command line flags. It is useful for generating test data and
linking programs that generate textual output to programs that require
binary input.
Changes: This release adds binary2ascii, which converts from binary to
textual representation. It fixes a bug in version 2.0 of ascii2binary that
prevented it from handling doubles correctly.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: This release fixes bugs in the 2D axis routines. Two new axis
types, XEquals and YEquals, have been added. The perpendicular symbol
routine in math.asy has been improved. The default linetype, linewidth,
fontsize, color, linecap, linejoin, and overwrite mode can now be changed
with the routine defaultpen(pen). A configure option has been added to
detect xdr header files.

About: AudienceConnect is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution for
independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. Demo site content is plain text, but AudienceConnect can be
extended to deliver any digital content: sound files, image files, etc.
Installation is very simple; no database technologies are used. The

[025] - Conary 0.12.5
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 13:21
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: This release adds an implementation of rpm2cpio to facilitate
migration. Server changes sped up dependency resolution considerably. When
building, the destdir has moved from /tmp to under the builddir. Within
recipes, many of the actions now interpret relative paths to be relative
to the maindir (or other directory specified by an argument) and absolute
paths to be relative to the destdir, and more commands can take an
alternative directory as an argument.

Mon, Jan 17th 2005 07:41
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
About: The DBMAIL package replaces the normal UNIX mailing system. All
email and user data is stored in a database. You can create an unlimited
number of email accounts, which can be checked using the POP3 or IMAP
protocol. Users can maintain their own set of email addresses. It is more
scalable, more secure, and faster than traditional mail systems. DBMAIL
has storage drivers for PostgreSQL and MySQL, and it has authentication
drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and LDAP.
Changes: One major bug was fixed. The authentication code (used for POP3
and IMAP) did not check the database connection before using it. A dropped
database connection resulted in a crash. This has been fixed by checking
the connection, and reconnecting in case of a dropped connection.

by Radu Corlan (http://freshmeat.net/users/rcorlan/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 13:22
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
About: GCX provides a complete set of data-reduction functions for CCD
photometry, with frame WCS fitting, automatic target identification,
aperture photometry of target and standard stars, single-frame ensemble
photometry data reduction, multi-frame color coefficient fitting,
extinction coefficient fitting, and all-sky photometry. It also controls
CCD cameras and telescopes, and implements automatic observation
scripting. Cameras are controlled through a hardware-specific server, to
which gcx connects through a TCP socket. The program can control
telescopes which use the LX200 protocol, and refine pointing by matching
images to the GSC catalog position of stars. It generates FITS files with
comprehensive header information.
Changes: A problem when compiling with gcc 3.4.2 has been fixed. Changes
were added for a clean compile on Cygwin. The sky estimation algorithm now
supports region growing for better rejection of spurious stars. The sky
histogram for a given star can be plotted. This release supports running

[043] - ipsvd 0.10.1
by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 11:04
System :: Networking
About: ipsvd is a set of Internet protocol service daemons for TCP/IP and
UDP/IP. A daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket; for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. The daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections; based on the client's
IP address or hostname, they can run different programs, set a different
environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency limit. On
Linux the network connection optionally can be encrypted using SSL3. ipsvd
can be used to run services usually run by inetd or tcpserver. Normally the
daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or daemontools' supervise.
Changes: This version introduces client support to the sslio program to
have it run under tcpclient. The logging of sslio, especially for SSL
warnings and errors, has been improved, and the documentation updated.

Mon, Jan 17th 2005 13:20
Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: LanguageSys is meant to internationalize your applications. It
handles the access to language files, which are based on an INI style. It
is possible to precompile the language files to increase the speed of
processing. This system is focused on being highly object-oriented, so it
makes the language aliases aviable as member variables of the own class.
It contains a system to fetch a list of all the available languages by a
given directory where the language files are located. A distinction of
languages is drawn as RFC1766 recommends. Examples, documentation, and a
simple script to precompile your language files are included.
Changes: Some important bugfixes have been made. It is strongly
recommended to update to this version as soon as possible, because there
were some critical errors in the parsing mechanism that allowed the
language file author to manipulate the class member variables. There was
also overall code cleanup.

[058] - Luau 0.1.9
by David Eklund (http://freshmeat.net/users/auknight/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 17:22
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution
About: Luau provides a backbone for disseminating software updates
throughout a software project's userbase. It differs from other
autoupdate solutions (eg. apt, Red Hat Network) in that it works on a
decentralized basis: developers provide a "Luau Repository" file
describing all currently available packages and updates which is then
downloaded and interpreted by the client. It is also more flexible in that
individual developers can distribute not only software updates but messages
throughout the userbase, which can be used to inform users of important
security updates, new software roadmaps, or anything else the developer
thinks is important for users of the software package. Also provided is an
X front-end ('luau-x') and a console-based front-end ('luau') that allow
the user to check for and download or install updates for all supported
software.
Changes: The Luau repository file now supports pre-definition of mirrors
through the use of the <mirror-list> tag, so that one no longer needs to
relist every mirror a file release is available on whenever a new software
version is released. Mirror URLs can also be specified for a group of
packages using the new "mirror-url" attribute with the new <package-group>
tag. Other attributes, such as size, filename, package type, and MD5 sum
can also be specified for several files at once using the <package-group>
tag. In addition, many memory leaks and other minor bugs were fixed.

[073] - radmind 1.4.0
by UMich RSUG (http://freshmeat.net/users/rsug/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 10:58
Security
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

About: Rails is a Web application framework for Ruby modeled after the MVC

Changes: This release introduces an extensive caching module that offers
three levels of granularity (page, action, fragment) and a variety of
stores (file, memory, DRb, MemCached). Additionally, it's now possible to
limit the actions that a given filter will apply to within a controller
using either :only or : except. Associations between unsaved objects make
it much easier to build big graphs that only make sense to be saved
together. Support for SQLite3 and MySQL 4.1.1+ has been added. Rails has
also added support for expressions such as 45.kilobytes + 2.3.megabytes

[077] - RRD Poller 1.3.0
by Olivier Poitrey (http://freshmeat.net/users/rs/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 11:00
Database :: API
System :: Monitoring
About: RRD poller allows you to poll RRD files and get the current value
of a given data source. Additionally, it implements some advanced checks
which can use past values to decide if the current one is out of threshold
or not. The main purpose of this tool is to form the interface between an
existing monitoring system like BigBrother, Nagios, or Mon and a set of
RRD graphs generated by some specialized data collectors like rrdcollect,
Cricket, and such. Thus, you can build a very modular monitoring/trend
architecture without the need of double polling.

About: rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt,
modified to store text in Unicode (either UCS-2 or UCS-4) and to use
locale-correct input and output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at
the same time, including Xft fonts.
Changes: This release made the keyboard fully configurable. Keys can be
assigned escape sequences both as terminal input and output (eg. change
locales on keypress, or assign Ctrl-1..9 for changing terminals in screen,
etc.). The X11 core font search algorithm was changed to avoid fonts that
lie about their actual size, which could have lead to large fonts being
selected, resulting in pixel droppings. -lsp was fixed, portability to
Cygwin and BSD was improved, the IUTF8 termios flag is now set when
available, and a number of crash bugs and tiny memory leaks were fixed.

[084] - TabLaunch 0.2
by dlam (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnlam/)
Mon, Jan 17th 2005 02:45

About: TabLaunch is a simple but cool-looking X application launch bar
based on YeahLaunch. It displays a user-specified list of applications as
tabs along the top of the screen. The user can specify an x coordinate
offset to position the launch bar or right-align it. The launch bar
becomes hidden after a specified delay. Each tab can be displayed as text
or an icon. Tabs are "enlarged" or zoomed-in when the mouse is over a tab.
Imlib is used to show and enlarge icons.
Changes: This release allows a different icon to be used as the zoomed-in
icon (rather than enlarging the icon, which may look pixellated), includes
optimizations to reduce CPU usage, fixes a text label that doesn't
completely show due to icon masking (by adding captions under icons), and

About: Xconq is a general strategy game system. It is a complete system
that includes all the components: a portable engine, graphical interfaces
for several platforms, multiple AIs, networking for multi-player games,
and an extensive game library. The games in the library range from ancient

a declarative language that lets you define the units, terrain, etc, then
fill in tables defining their interaction. Literally hundreds of different
properties and tables are available to the game designer.
Changes: Several significant improvements were made. A bug that prevented
units from being seen when all unit see chances were the default was fixed
along with a bug that prevented units from being seen in designer mode,
unit display bugs in the SDL interface, some network sync bugs, a bug that
prevented more than one player from successfully joining some network games
