[001] - bigFORTH/MINOS 2.0.13
by Bernd Paysan (http://freshmeat.net/users/forthy/)
Sun, Jan 16th 2005 15:04
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries
About: bigFORTH is a native code Forth. It was originally developed on the
Atari ST for the Motorola 68k processor and was recently ported to Intel
386, running under a DOS extender (GO32). bigFORTH is available for Linux
and Windows 95/98/NT in pre-beta-test. This version is available under
GPL. The most striking new feature is the graphical user interface MINOS
and the form editor Theseus. MINOS is a graphic user interface (GUI) for
X, written for bigFORTH-Linux and bigFORTH-Win32. It includes a rapid GUI
developement editor (Theseus).
Changes: This release fixes the bugs left over from 2.0.12. Scroll wheel
support has been added. Unicode support (UTF-8 format) has been added.
This is a significant change, so take care. The Unicode code only comes
into effect when your language environment variable (like LANG, LC_ALL, or
LC_CTYPE) contains the substring UTF-8. To display Unicode properly, an Xft
font is used for rendering, and a second font inserted for CJK rendering.

[002] - ByteName 1.1
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Sun, Jan 16th 2005 00:05
Text Processing
About: ByteName is a tool that for each byte of the input prints a line
consisting of the byte offset, the hex value of the byte, the octal value
of the byte, and its ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) name. For values below 0x7F,
this is the same as ASCII. A command line flag suppresses printing of
lines corresponding to ASCII characters, which is useful for locating
stray non-ASCII codes.
Changes: This version added Latin-1 information.

[003] - C++ ResourcePool 0.99.08
by mws (http://freshmeat.net/users/mws/)
Sun, Jan 16th 2005 14:49
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.
Changes: The Doxygen documentation has been improved. flex++ has been
added to the list of requirements (the configure script will complain if
it is missing), and a refactoring of an internal template class has been
done.

by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
Sun, Jan 16th 2005 15:12
Text Processing
About: cdlabelgen is a Perl script that generates printouts suitable for
use as CD/DVD jewel case inserts or CD/DVD envelopes. Both normal sized
cases and slim cases are handled. cdlabelgen can be used to create table
of contents for music CDs, archival CDs, DVDs, etc., with customizable
logos or background images, and it generates PostScript files as output.
The package also includes a Perl CGI Web script which accepts JPEG images
as logos or backgrounds, and can also create PDF output files.
Changes: Now supports directly printing a label on a CD or DVD.

[008] - fallback-reboot 0.9
by Dan Stromberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/strombrg/)
Sun, Jan 16th 2005 22:36
About: fallback-reboot is a last resort, when you need to remotely reboot
a computer. It attempts to maximize its ability to get the job done by
completely avoiding touching the hard disk; it opens no files, and it
locks itself into memory to avoid swapping/paging. It also does not fork
or exec. It currently lacks any cryptography.
Changes: This release adds cryptography based on libssl, autoconf, and a
client program in Python (you can still just use telnet if you want,
though).

About: Kenosis is a fully-distributed p2p RPC system built on top of
XMLRPC. Nodes are automatically connected to each other via a
Kademlia-style network, and can route RPC requests efficiently to any
online node. It is well-tested and reliable.
Changes: Kenosis now supports the concept of services. These are "subnets"
that allow nodes to route requests only among nodes that support the same
RPC services. This release also includes the example app "kweb" that
demonstrates using Kenosis to create an anonymizing WWW proxy, similar to
Coral P2P. This release maintains protocol compatibility with 0.92.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Libxml2 is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)

a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Rails is a Web application framework for Ruby modeled after the MVC
pattern. It uses Action Pack for the Controller and View, Active Record for
the Model.
Changes: This release introduces an extensive caching module that offers
three levels of granularity (page, action, fragment) and a variety of
stores (file, memory, DRb, MemCached). Additionally, it's now possible to
limit the actions that a given filter will apply to within a controller
using either :only or :except. Associations between unsaved objects make
it much easier to build big graphs that only make sense to be saved
together. Support for SQLite3 and MySQL 4.1.1+ has been added. Rails has
also added the possibility for expressions like 45.kilobytes +
2.3.megabytes and 45.minutes + 2.hours.

Sun, Jan 16th 2005 14:52
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: Rasqal is a C library for querying RDF, supporting the RDQL and
SPARQL languages. It provides APIs for creating a query and parsing query
syntax. It features pluggable triple-store source and matching interfaces,
an engine for executing the queries and an API for manipulating results as
bindings. It uses the Raptor RDF parser to return triples from RDF content
and can alternatively work with the Redland RDF library's persistent triple
stores. It is portable across many POSIX systems.

support graph patterns and optional graph patterns. Formatting of query
results in SPARQL Results XML format was added. The SPARQL query language
was updated to match the latest syntax changes, and many other bugfixes
and improvements were made.
