About: Access Point Utilities for Unix is a set of utilities that
configure and monitor a Wireless Access Point under Unix. It is known to
compile (with GCC and the IBM C compiler) and run under Linux, FreeBSD,
OpenBSD, MacOS X, AIX, and QNX.
Changes: A huge number of bugs and bad assumptions were fixed in all of
the utilities. New functionality was introduced for AP client-side RSSI
statistics and AP link info, AP-side RSSI (and LQ if available)
information, 802.1X (ATMEL12350 MIB with EZYNET ext.), RADIUS
authentication (ATMEL410 MIB with SBRIDGES ext.), and AP MIB type
autodetection for ap-mrtg, ap-auth, and ap-trapd. An ap-tftp utility for
upgrading firmware and an ap-rrd utility for storing stats from an AP into
an RRDtools database were included.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
About: Autopano-SIFT is a helper program for panorama image generation. It
automatically generates control point information for a number of image
files for use with the hugin panorama generation software. To do this, it
utilizes the SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm, a
sophisticated image feature matching algorithm.
Changes: Best quality refinement of control point matches was added. The
found matches are now refined by using a small part of the original images
at high resolution. This leads to even more exact coordinate matches.

Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: BOTEC is a simple but useful calculator that assists with
astrophysical, orbital mechanics, and space navigation calculations. It
is a "back-of-the-envelope calculator" rather than an
industrial-strength calculator, although this may change in the future.
It is primarily intended for people familiar with physics and Python,
and as such is unlikely to be useful to the average end user. It includes
solar system data, and all values are strictly in SI units.
Changes: This version separated transfers from maneuvers and added support
for Oberth maneuvers.

About: BUSH (Business Shell) combines the capabilities of BASH, PHP, GCC,
and PostgreSQL into a uniform design for rapidly designing secure,
reliable Web templates. Based on an ISO standard, it promotes code reuse:
scripts and templates can be compiled with GCC or ported to JVM or .Net
using third party tools with only minor changes. It can also replace BASH
as an interactive command shell with SQL support, and is a general purpose
scripting language.
Changes: FreeBSD support, a new Web template debugging mode, new
documentation with more tutorials and better navigation, and a new online

Sat, Jan 15th 2005 23:05
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
About: Dolda Webmail (or d-mail for short) is a Webmail system written in
PHP and interfacing with a back-end IMAP server. Advantages over most
other projects of a similar sort are that it uses a persistant connection
to the IMAP server (which increases performance on the Web server, reduces
load on the network and on the IMAP server, and doesn't force the Web
server to store the user's password in-core), and that it makes full use
of XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.
Changes: This release featured per-user preferences, the ability to save
sent messages, a modular stylesheet system, and better navigation.

[012] - g-jutils 1.2
by Gertjan (http://freshmeat.net/users/gertjanvanzwieten/)
Sat, Jan 15th 2005 07:21
Utilities
About: The g-jutils are a collection of small command line utilities that
use the GJutils Python module for common things like color output and
command line parsing. The collection currently consists of four utilities:
a utility to monitor URLs for changes, a tool for renaming files using
regular expressions, a modular reminder service, and a (geography)
training tool.
Changes: The training utility now offers the possibility of entering all
relevant answers at once instead of one at a time. This should make the
training a bit less sensitive to cheating. The line wrapper has been
removed from the core and can now be found in the unofficial repository,
and all utilities have been modified to make use of the latest addition to
the GJutils module, the "options" object.

Sat, Jan 15th 2005 22:55
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
System :: Networking
About: Galeon is a GNOME Web browser based on Gecko (the Mozilla rendering
engine). It is fast, has a light interface, and is fully
standards-compliant.
Changes: This version works with Mozilla 1.7 -> 1.7.5, 1.8a3 -> 1.8a6, and
trunk (a bug in 1.8a6 prevents it from working with Galeon if Mozilla is
compiled by FC3's GCC or CVS GCC). This release stops the page from
stealing focus and jumps to tabs that open JavaScript dialogs, resolving a
Secunia advisory. A yellow location bar is now displayed for secure sites.
Myportal was overhauled, cookie preferences were fixed, and the JavaScript
console was improved. Compilation against FireFox and Thunderbird libraries
is now allowed (requires a custom build with extra components). Better
smart bookmarks encoding was implemented, and the iso-codes package is now
used if available for language names.

About: gfeed is an RSS feed reader for Linux and Gtk+ 2.0. It is designed
to be a simple yet highly customizable reader, not an aggregator, which
means it is designed for easy integration into a desktop. Its features
include: customizable "feed" files that describe a feed; full support for
transparency (native to the app) under X.org 6.8 and higher; and automatic
updating of feeds based on an interval defined in the feed file.
Changes: This release added support for specifying link color in the

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: Gmerlin is a set of multimedia libraries which comes with several
applications. Applications include a full featured media player with Gtk-2
GUI, an audio/video transcoder, a webcam application, and an ALSA mixer.
The libraries provide many low-level functions like handling of
uncompressed A/V streams or decoding a wide range of multimedia formats.
All libraries were written with good reusability in mind, so you can
easily write your own applications based on gmerlin libraries.
Changes: Lots of crashes, hangs, and compilation errors were fixed. A new
transcoding application that converts all supported input files into
Quicktime, AVI, WAV, or single images was added. Lots of new formats and
codecs were added. AAC streams over HTTP are now supported. Initial
LCDproc support was implemented along with high quality audio resampling,
a volume control for the player, and recursive importing of directory
trees into the media tree.

[018] - GXPARSE 1.6
by Ian E. Gorman (http://freshmeat.net/users/iegorman/)
Sat, Jan 15th 2005 23:08
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: GXPARSE is not a new parser, but is an additional processing layer
that makes it much easier to use event-based parsers like the SAX parser.
It supports both direct sequential output and a random access mode (the
Resequencer interface). The random access mode delays output until the end
of the input, but makes it much easier to handle ID/IDREF attributes.
GXPARSE maintains most advantages of the event-based parser. Application
development and maintenance is considerably easier, but processing is a
little slower.
Changes: This program was refactored, the beginning of a user guide was
written. Programming examples and the docbook-to-HTML translator that
produced the Web version of the user guide were included.

About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
for personal computers.

About: XFPROT is a graphical frontend for the F-Prot Antivirus for Linux
Small Business Edition. It was based upon the XSTEP-3.5.1 library.
Starting from version 0.20beta, it is based on the GTK+ 1.2 libraries.
>From version 1.0-rc2, it is also possible to use GTK+ 2.x libraries.
Changes: The TextViewWindow and TextEditWindow widgets were improved, and
the code was optimized. A nasty random crash in main_loop() related to
gtk_widget_destroy() was fixed. A check for su or sudo was added to the
configure script, as this is needed to make the update button work in
systems that use sudo rather than su (such as Ubuntu Linux). The option
--with-install-dir (prefix) was added to the configure script. A bug in
the close button of the AboutWindow widget with Gtk+2.x libs was fixed.
Support for f-prot 4.5.3 was added.

About: xmcd2make is a set of Perl scripts which support users of the
gramofile recording, track splitting, and signal processing package. It
consists of 3 userland tools: findtracks.pl (a command line interface to
gramofile track detection), signalproc.pl (a command line interface to
gramofile track splitting and signal processing), and xmcd2make.pl (a
script that takes an xmcd file of song names and track timing files and
creates a makefile). When the makefile is run, it splits the tracks,
performs gramofile signal processing, and encodes the resulting tracks to
Ogg Vorbis format with the correct song names and good tags.
Changes: A bug in findtracks that prohibited proper command line options
processing was fixed. A Makefile problem with the default installation
path was also fixed.

[053] - zsync 0.1.6
by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
Sat, Jan 15th 2005 07:20
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.
Changes: This release handles HTTP proxies and unusual server responses
better. It also fixes some problems with compressed downloads.
