[001] - abcm2ps 4.8.8 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 23:10

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release increased the number of microtone accidentals,
extended the !deco(! / !deco)! mechanism, and fixed several bugs.

About: The abcMIDI suite consists of programs for turning ABC music files
into MIDI and vice versa, typesetting them as PostScript files, and
manipulate them in several ways.

Changes: A bug that caused abc2midi to crash on !arpeggio! was fixed. A
new '-nogr' option was added to midi2abc.

System :: Operating System
System :: Systems Administration

About: Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is
lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages
are in .tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is
designed to allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined
compared to some other distributions. Things that are relatively unused
are not kept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you
with a solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custom
installation you're looking for. Arch has a package build system that
allows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it very easy to
rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Arch also aims to use
the newer features available to Linux users, such as reiserfs/ext3 and
devfs.

  by Jay Beale (http://freshmeat.net/users/armitage/)
  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 03:49

Security

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the
installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question.
The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when
securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less
likely to compromise the increased security.

Changes: This version adds support for Fedora Core 3.

About: CCux Linux is a Linux distribution especially optimized for i686
and higher processor architectures. For package management it uses the
RPM format in connection with the apt tools, which give it automatic
dependency resolving when installing new software and therefore makes the
 installation of new software much easier.

Changes: This release included kernel 2.6.10 (including ipw2100, ipw2200,
Supermount, Bootsplash, wlan-ng, acerhk, and performance patches), NVidia
1.0.6629, X.org 6.8.1, KDE 3.3.2, and Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0. Many

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: CodeWorker is a versatile parsing tool and a universal source code
generator. It interprets a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. The file formats to parse are described in an extended-BNF
syntax. Template-based scripts drive the writing of patterns for
generating code or text. The code generation knows how to preserve
protected areas with hand-typed code and provides code expansion,
source-to-source translation, and program transformation. It provides a
native translation of CodeWorker's scripts in C++.

Changes: Some bugs were fixed in the BNF-parser interpreter and in the
native C++ translation of CW's scripts. It is now possible to ignore
Ada-like comments in a BNF grammar. A new function was added for inserting
a new element at a given position of a nodes list.

Desktop Environment :: Application Themes :: Shells

About: cw is a non-intrusive real-time ANSI color wrapper for common
Unix-based commands. It is designed to simulate the environment of the
commands being executed, so that if a person types 'du', 'df', 'ping',
etc. in their shell it will automatically color the output in real-time
according to a definition file containing the color format desired. It
has support for wildcard match coloring, tokenized coloring,
headers/footers, case scenario coloring, command-line- dependent
definition coloring, and includes over 50 pre- made definition files.

Changes: Checks were added for the "CW_HEADER" and "CW_FOOTER" environment
variables, to set a header or footer if there is not one specified in the
definition file. The "remap" definition instruction and the "CW_REMAP"
environment variable check were added to remap colors to special ANSI
(code) colors or other internal colors. The "clear" definition instruction
and the "CW_CLEAR" environmental variable check were added, to clear the
screen before the program starts. The "nocolor" definition instruction was
added, to disable all coloring via a definition file. Pre-made headers and
footers were added. Several bugs were fixed.

[021] - Conary 0.13.2

  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 14:49

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: This release properly takes flavor into account when resolving
dependencies; it used to be possible to get very misleading error
messages. On the build side, the Use/Flags code was rewritten and tied
more closely to flavors, and groups now use flavor-style strings instead
of "flagsets" to specify flavors. The flavor configuration is now stored
on the system instead of being hard-coded into Conary, which requires that
the distro-release package (which contains the default system flavor
definition) be updated synchronously.

About: Cyphesis is a fantasy MMORPG server (and NPC engine for servers)
using AI/A-Life techniques which doesn't have a predefined story. It is
the Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life server/client used by the
WorldForge project.

Changes: The database code has been modified so that the server can be run
entirely without connecting to the database in demo mode, loading rule data
from files instead. Support has been added to the AI code to allow NPCs to
answer questions based on their Knowledge. The natural language processor
has been modified to be more tolerant of differences in sentence
structure. Reference counting has been implemented for all entities, and
used to massively improve the efficiency of broadcast operations. Support
has been added to configure to link most of the libraries statically to

  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 11:40

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: DBMEdit is a web-based DBM database editor (in Perl 5). If you use
DBM files and don't have a simple way to edit them, you'll want this. It
treats each element in the DBM as several fields joined by a delimiter, in
effect supporting multiple columns within the single-column DBM format.
DBMEdit displays your DBM database as a table, and provides auto-sized
forms to add or edit records. Multi- user access is safe.

Changes: Five DBM formats are now supported. You can display fields as
select menus. Non-English text is handled better. A couple of bugs were
fixed.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: GNU polyxmass features an integrated mass spectrometry framework
where users are able to define brand new polymer chemistries (within the
polyxdef module), and use these definitions in order to make simple mass
calculations (within the polyxcalc module) or perform complex simulations
of polymer chemistry with related mass data computations (within the
polyxedit module). The framework allows full customization of every aspect
of the polymer chemistry being defined, and of the way the polymer
sequences are graphically displayed. This program was formerly called
"polyXmass".

Changes: A m/z ratio calculator that can be called either from the
polyxcalc module or from the polyxedit module was added. The atom
definition that is used for the m/z ratio computations is the one used in
each module. Some small bugs were corrected. The pI calculation window was

[053] - JSON-RPC-Java 0.6
  by Michael Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/metaparadigm/)
  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 06:55

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JSON-RPC-Java provides an RPC implementation that allows JavaScript
DHTML Web applications to call remote methods in a Java Application Server
(remote scripting) without the need for page reloading. It is an enabler
for the next generation of fast and highly dynamic enterprise Java Web
applications. Minimal changes (if any) are necessary to existing
server-side Java code to allow calling from JavaScript (such as the
marshalling and unmarshalling of special types), as JSON-RPC-Java
dynamically maps JavaScript objects to and from Java objects using Java
reflection.

Changes: This now works in Opera 8 Beta and Konqueror 3.3 (with a patch to
KHTML). A new lightweight JavaScript JSON-RPC client was added. The browser
support documentation was updated. A new mailing list was added.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Hardware
System :: Recovery Tools

About: The Linbox Rescue Server (LRS) is a tool to centralize hard disk
images, file backups, hardware inventory, Windows PCs software inventory,
and remote access on a single server. The LRS can be managed from any PC
through a Web-based administration interface. A bootable installation CD
or DVD can also be generated from any hard disk image. It supports Ext2/3,
ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, NTFS, and FAT filesystems (including Windows' dynamic
disks).

Changes: Disk images can now be restored using three protocols: Multicast
TFTP, NFS, and TFTP. An improved Web interface allows you to manage
clients by groups and profiles, and to view their current status (last
restored image, backup in progress, etc). Support was added for some new
SATA and RAID disk controllers. Background images can be displayed in
the PXE boot loader menu. Lots of bugs were fixed in the inventory, files
backup, and bootable CD modules.

Home Automation

About: x10dev provides a /dev interface to an X10 network through a
combination of Linux kernel modules and daemons. It is intended to provide
a standard interface and syntax to shell script utilities (such as cat and
echo), Perl scripts, C programs, or Java programs so that everything from
a quick hack to a more advanced program can manipulate the X10 devices in
an automated home regardless of the transceiver used. Its simplest use is
with shell scripts (examples of which are provided in the package).
Currently the project supports the 3 X10 transceivers (PowerLinc Serial,
PowerLinc USB, and CM11A).

Changes: This version has a fix for a bug with the driver for the CM11A
which caused X10 housecodes to be incorrectly displayed in the logs. It
also introduces a better method to build and install the drivers so that
the user does not have to have kernel source code to use the drivers.

  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 16:18

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: The Network Security Policy Compiler (NetSPoC) is a tool for
security management of large computer networks with different security
domains. It generates configuration files for packet filters controlling
the borders of security domains. It provides its own language for
describing security policy and the topology of a network. The security
policy is a set of rules that state which packets are allowed to pass the
network and which are not. NetSPoC is topology aware; a rule for traffic
from A to B is automatically applied to all managed packet filters on the
path from A to B.

Changes: "chains" of iptables and "object-groups" of Cisco PIX are
supported now. NAT code for PIX ("static" and "global") is supported for
both directions. Handling of NAT has been generally enhanced to support
dynamic translation of multiple networks to a single address range.
Optimization of generated access control lists has been augmented by a
local optimization step for each router. Handling of subnets is improved
to get better results from optimization. Code for "any" rules is now
inserted at top of ACLs, following deny rules.

[073] - OSSP cfg 0.9.8
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Mon, Jan 24th 2005 07:46

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System
Text Processing

About: OSSP cfg is a ISO-C library for parsing arbitrary C/C++-style
configuration files. A configuration is sequence of directives, each
directive consists of zero or more tokens, and each token can be either a
string or again a complete sequence. This means the configuration syntax
has a recursive structure and allows you to create configurations with
arbitrarily-nested sections. The configuration syntax also provides
complex single/double/balanced quoting of tokens,
hexadecimal/octal/decimal character encodings, character escaping, C/C++
and shell-style comments, etc. The library API allows importing of a
configuration text into an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), traversing the AST,
and optionally exporting the AST again as a configuration text.

Changes: A fix was made for "va_list" variable passing in "cfg_fmt_xxx"
functions. Autoconf support for va_copy() detection and usage was added.
The new GNU Bison 2.0 parser generator is now also accepted in the build
environment.

It provides the following key features: address abstraction (local, IPv4,
and IPv6), type abstraction, I/O timeouts, I/O stream buffering, and
convenience I/O functions.

Changes: This release adds casts to NULL pointers passed to variadic
functions because NULL is not guaranteed to be a pointer.
SA_SYSCALL_GETHOSTBYNAME has been added for supporting the overloading of
gethostbyname(2) system calls. The build environment has been upgraded to

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Pin is an ATOM-like instrumentation tool for Linux executables. It
allows arbitrary code (written in C or C++) to be injected at arbitrary
places in an executable. Unlike Atom, Pin does not perform the
instrumentation statically by rewriting the executable, but rather
dynamically by adding instrumentation while the executable is running.
Currently supported platforms include IA-32, Intel Xscale, and Itanium
processors.

Changes: This update features numerous bugfixes, improved memory handling,
and a preview of multi-threading support (c.f. ToolUnitTests/mt.C). It has
been successfully tested on RH 7.2, 9.0, EL3, and FC2. Problems with SuSE
and Mandrake are being worked on.

About: CorporateTime is a proprietary calendar server system produced by
Steltor. Ruby/CorporateTime is a Ruby language extension that serves as an
interface to the CorporateTime Calendar API (CAPI). Its purpose is to allow
interaction with CorporateTime servers via the Ruby programming language.

Changes: The CTime::Agenda#get_event is now implemented for Oracle CAPI
v9. The code that handled RECURRENCE-ID was removed, as this seemed to
result in the inability to update existing events using their UID and
CTime::Agenda#set_event. Event objects that defined @attendees now have
those attendees set when creating an event using CAPI v9.
CTime::Agenda::Event#duration_str was fixed to emit a more clearly defined

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: XML Encoded Source is a tool that encodes source code in XML form
to allow conversion to other languages, the generation of documentation
such as UML, and to provide an intermediate format for code generators
that allows code to be more quickly compiled on the fly. It also provides
language independence in code distribution and could provide a much
better way to mix scripting code in with XML data.

Changes: This version now imports Java and C# source code and exports
Java, C#, C++ header, and definition source code.

Software Development

About: YourKit Java Profiler is a CPU and memory profiler that makes it
easy to solve wide range of CPU- and memory-related performance problems.
It features automatic leak detection, powerful tools for the analysis of
memory distribution, an object heap browser, comprehensive memory tests as
part of your JUnit testing process, extremely low profiling overhead,
transparent deobfuscation support, and integration with Eclipse, JBuilder,
IntelliJ IDEA, and JDeveloper IDEs.

Changes: Own method times (i.e. not including the time spent in subcalls)
are now shown in the 'Invocation tree'. Own number and the size of created
objects are shown in the "Garbage" and "Allocation Call Tree" views. The
'View | Method' action was split into two separate actions: 'View | Method
Merged Callees' and 'View | Method Back Traces'. Realistic progress
percentages are shown when snapshots are re-loaded on startup. Actions now
work from menus under Mac OS X. The NetBeans integration wizard was fixed
under Linux.
