[001] - Aegis 4.20
  by Peter Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmiller/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 22:24

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Testing
Software Development :: Version Control

About: Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management
system. It provides a framework within which a team of developers may work
on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis coordinates
integrating these changes back into the master source of the program, with
as little disruption as possible. Aegis supports geographically distributed
development.

Changes: A -loop option was added to the aeintegratq command and
-suggest-limit was added to aet. The history recapitulation code now
tracks file renames even better. A new -replay option was added to aedist.
When used in with an aeget server, it can be used to efficiently
synchronize two repositories. A new optional review_policy_command field
is supported in the project configuration file, which allows complete
customization of review policies for each project. The aeget command is
now the preferred CGI interface. Numerous bugs were fixed.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Office/Business :: Groupware

About: Aeromys is an application that provides extremely fast access to
email through the Web. It accomplishes this by using predictive caching,
which means that information is retrieved from the mail server before it
is requested by the user. It is designed to be highly scalable, vastly
configurable, and extremely fast. The default front-end is written in PHP,
and the back-end engine is written in C.

Changes: This release has improved folder support, adds message index
paging and HTML email support, and has many bugfixes.

  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 15:51

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
System :: Networking

About: amavisd-lite is a high performance, scalable email filter for
Postfix that does virus scanning, spam scanning (SpamAssassin), attachment
filename scanning, and per-user whitelist/blacklists. It is designed for
use by ISPs and large email hosting providers. It is a complete rewrite
based on amavisd-new. It is designed to be more lightweight, with faster
transaction times and a smaller memory footprint, at the expense of a
minor loss of some flexibility. It runs as an LMTP email content filter.
This allows it to accept messages rapidly from Postfix, and ensures that
messages are evaluated on a per-user basis, and that the MTA recieves a
per-user status for each message. All settings are stored in SQL, making
for quick and easy integration and administration.

  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 05:24

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary

About: Armangil's podcatcher is a podcast client for the command line. It
downloads subscribed podcasts and generates M3U or PLS playlists that can
be fed into most MP3 player applications. Subscriptions are defined in
OPML files. The cache directory can be constrained in size, in which case
the oldest audio files from previous podcatching sessions are deleted
first.

About: Arping is an ARP level ping utility. It's good for finding out if
an IP is taken before you have routing to that subnet. It can also ping
MAC addresses directly. A rewrite that supports Libnet 1.1.x is included.

  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 04:43

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in dirtime and improves arc to coincide
exactly with circle. The color gray is now equivalent to black+white.
C-like strings were implemented with full ANSI C character string escape
sequences, which were removed from TeX strings. A new "explicit" keyword
prevents implicit casting of function arguments. Problems with
antialiasing, PDF generation, label bounding boxes, gv watch files, and
xasy alignment were resolved. The configuration now checks for broken xdr
headers. A local copy of GNU getopt is used where lacking. Man pages are
now installed by default.

[012] - darcs 1.0.2rc2
  by David Roundy (http://freshmeat.net/users/droundy/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 04:46

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS
or arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from
other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully
functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful theory
of patches. In spite of its power, darcs is simple to use, in part because
of the symmetry that is restored by making each copy of the repository a
branch.

Changes: Fixes have been made for a few relatively minor bugs. The most
important were two bugs that affected usability in specific (relatively
rare) circumstances and one that, in theory, could lead to repository
corruption. A --set-scripts-executable flag has been added to make darcs
set the executable bit on scripts beginning with a shebang.

  by Simon Josefsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jas4711/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 22:14

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA
are supported.

Changes: The code for converting data between character encodings was
cleaned up. It is now possible to bootstrap with unmodified Automake
installations. Translation improvements were made.

[024] - Grout 1.0
  by Gervase Markham (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerv/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 15:52

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Grout is a program that solves tile-placing, edge-matching puzzles.
It runs under both the Sun JVM and the free Kaffe VM. Puzzles may be of the
sort where an edge matches itself ('red' matches 'red') or where an edge
matches its pair ('front' matches 'back'). It only supports puzzles using
tiles that have either four sides (square) or six sides (hexagonal). The
board is assumed to be symmetrical, with a single central tile. This means
that only puzzles with certain number of tiles are accepted. The package
comes with instructions and several sample puzzles.

[028] - Ikaros Simulation Framework 0.8.0
  by Janne (http://freshmeat.net/users/JanneM2/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 04:42

Education
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Ikaros is a framework for writing and running component-based
simulators. It is presently used for simulations of brain areas and
learning models, but is general enough to be easily used for any
discrete-time simulations. A simulation consists of modules written in C
or C++ that are connected in the simulator, with connections specified in
an XML file. At this time it is a console-based application, but there are
socket-based hooks for adding a GUI. The package contains a number of
modules and complete documentation for working with the framework.

Changes: This release adds a number of bugfixes and internal improvements,
more (and better working) standard modules, and several functional
improvements (and some incompatibilities with previous versions).
Connections can now have delays specified, including zero-time delays if
the topology allows it, real-time synchronization, and many new standard
modules, including a full set of vector operations. The OS X and Linux
versions are now shipped in the same package.

[029] - Java Tree Builder 1.3.2
  by Vidyut Samanta (aka vids) (http://freshmeat.net/users/vids/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 22:18

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: JTB is a syntax tree builder to be used with the Java Compiler
Compiler (JavaCC) parser generator.  It takes a plain JavaCC grammar file
as input and automatically generates a set of syntax tree classes based on
the productions in the grammar, utilizing the Visitor design pattern, two
interfaces, Visitor and GJVisitor, two depth-first visitors,
DepthFirstVisitor and GJDepthFirst, whose default methods simply visit
the children of the current node, and a JavaCC grammar jtb.out.jj with
the proper annotations to build the syntax tree during parsing. New
visitors, which subclass DepthFirstVisitor or GJDepthFirst, can override
the default methods and perform various operations on and manipulate the
generated syntax tree.

Changes: A scoping problem with some of the productions that occurred when
a grammar with embedded Java code was given was fixed. The program was
adding curly braces around declarations, which would prevent them from
being seen at the place where they were being used.

About: JTrigger is a sample player/drum machine intended for use with
hardware trigger pads, but it works fine with any sort of external MIDI
sequencer as well. It supports up to 2048 samples, has velocity
sensitivity, and can load anything supported by libsndfile. It attempts to
keep resource usage low.

Changes: In this release the configuration format has changed to something
not nearly as obfuscated. This version can now detach from the controlling
console and become a daemon. Sample mixing and MIDI control is now
considerably more flexible. The internal code was cleaned up quite a bit.

[052] - peps 2.0 (Stable)
  by G. Adam Stanislav (http://freshmeat.net/users/whizkid/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 23:28

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: Peps converts encapsulated PostScript into bitmaps. It can simply
convert EPS files into bitmap files, or it can work as a Unix filter that
converts EPS from stdin into a bitmap written to stdout. It can be used to
create scripts that create bitmaps dynamically using CGI, and can even send
out the necessary HTTP Content-Type header. It can determine whether the
user's browser accepts gzip encoding, and if so, send out the additional
Content-Encoding header and filter the bitmap through gzip. A companion
utility called xpeps sends the resultant bitmap to the X display, allowing
you to develop and debug your CGI scripts locally.

Changes: This release uses the respective Ghostscript devices directly and
is no longer limited to PNM and PNG formats, working with any
bitmap-producing Ghostscript device. It now accepts input from stdin and
can work as a Unix filter. It can now also produce an HTTP Content-Type
header automatically, read MIME types from a file, detect whether the
user's browser supports gzip compression compress the output, and accept
an input file whose name starts with a dash. The optional xpeps tool was
included, which is useful for debugging CGI scripts.

[054] - php4flicks 0.4.1
  by mr. fox (http://freshmeat.net/users/fuchsd/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 16:03

Database

About: php4flicks is a PHP/MySQL movie database. It features automatic
retrieval of information from IMDB, genre support, user-defined movie
categories, a completely CSS-based layout, a powerful search function, and
the ability to export the movie list as a PDF. A multilingual version as
well as a multi-user version offering db-based user administration, buddy
lists, a communication panel, and much more are also available.

Changes: This release adds genre support, search/browse functionality for
genres, and full-text search for titles. Movies are now stored with their
own (not IMDB) key as the primary key, so the same movie can be inserted
several times. The search function has been rewritten. Searching is more
powerful and much faster for some queries. PDF export also works with the
ezpdf PHP class, which is easier to set up (no compilation needed).

[059] - radmind 1.4.1
  by UMich RSUG (http://freshmeat.net/users/rsug/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 10:48

Security
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

Changes: A build problem on pre-3 gcc (e.g. NetBSD 1.6) because of a C90
vs. C99 issue has been fixed.

page, fixes filename problems that came up under FreeBSD, adds
"addslashes" to some input areas to correct problems with punctuation,
includes index.php to provide a common link between different user level
logins, and converts the logo image from BMP format to JPEG.

You can sync contact names to/from an FTP site. It has context sensitive
help. Additional applets can be downloaded. The GUI interface used is
RubyWebDialogs, which runs through a Web browser. Therefore, it is
completely cross-platform. This is part of the Tinker framework using
Ruby, so applets can be added and removed.

Changes: This release adds some context-sensitive help, editing of the

Changes: This version adds some context sensitive help, edit config file
and reload config variables, and changes to tinker context help script. It
has refactored the month calendar display so that it should be more
readable, and has fixed i10n calls for calendar for Dutch. An archive

  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 01:42

Utilities

About: Sed, the GNU Stream Editor, copies the named files (standard input
default) to the standard output, edited according to a script of commands.

Changes: In this version, \B correctly means "not on a word boundary"
rather than "inside a word", matching sed 3.x and Perl. Regular expression
addresses no longer use leftmost-longest matching: e.g. /.\+/ only looks
for a single character, and does not try to find as many of them as
possible like it used to do. Documentation about the new interpretation of
`s|abc\|def||' in NEWS, and about localization issues, was added. A
--disable-nls build problems on Solaris was fixed, as was `make check' in
non-English locales. Speedups (up to 30-40%) to regular expression

Changes: This release fixed some key bugs and included some new features
like support for halfop, syncing of the MOTD, and tracking channel sync
times. The auto-reconnect and auto-relogin code was implemented. Several
sanity checks were implemented for IRC servers that violate the RFC in
various ways. This release was tested against one such IRC server for

[071] - SquidClamAV Redirector 1.6.2
  by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 04:44

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.

Changes: This release fixes a bug which made it unusable after a certain
amount of time. Python's tempfile.mkstemp function returns a filehandle
and the name, so there was no close for the filehandle returned by
mkstemp(). This release also fixes a minor problem with redirection.

powerful class library for parsing, generating, or editing Internet MIME
and non-MIME messages. It is designed to provide a fast and an easy way to
manipulate Internet mail messages. It is fully object-oriented,
cross-platform, and standards-compliant (with maximum conformance to RFCs
822, 2045, 2046, and 2047). The messaging module allows you to connect to
mail services (such as POP3, IMAP, SMTP, and maildir) in a transparent
manner, with a lot of features supported.

Changes: Fixed bugs in the build system and some code cleanup.

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: Wmconfig is a text-based menu generation tool for various X window
managers for desktops. Toolkits like Qt or Gtk are not required. It uses a
simple configuration layout and the configuration may be edited with a text
editor.

[085] - WorldForge::Eris 1.3.3 (Development)
  by Alistair Riddoch (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajr/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 10:41

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: WorldForge::Eris is designed to simplify client development (and
avoid duplicating effort) by providing a common framework to deal with
server communications for the WorldForge project.

Changes: The internal time-out handler on BaseConnection has been
refactored. The Timeout signal on Connection has been removed, and instead
reports timeouts via the Failure signal. A DeleteLater system has been
added to allow safe clean-up of objects from within slots. The meta-server
code has been updated for the timeout changes. The inheritance of Poll has
been changed to avoid SigC++ related issues; inheriting from a signal is
problematic.

[087] - X-Plane 8.06 Release-Candidate-2 (Beta)
  by Stanislaw Y. Pusep (http://freshmeat.net/users/stanislaughterer/)

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
for personal computers.

Changes: Instrument bugfixes.

[089] - XINS 1.1.0 (Stable)
  by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)
  Fri, Jan 28th 2005 10:46

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: New features include support for floating point and binary types,
structured input, XML-based requests and various other improvements, as
well as bugfixes.
