[003] - alcatel_readserial 0.5
  by Jason Balicki (http://freshmeat.net/users/kodak_frontier/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 09:39

About: alcatel_readserial is a Perl script that reads data from the serial
port of an Alcatel Omni PCX PBX system. The Alcatel Omni PCX has a
management serial port, used to log in to the system, but you can also
print "call tickets" to that port. These tickets are a formatted record of
terminated calls in the system. This script will read the port, filter out
the junk, process the ticket, and print it to a CSV file for further
processing later.

[005] - Apache Portable Runtime 1.1.0
  by Graham Leggett (http://freshmeat.net/users/minfrin/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 05:31

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The mission of the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) project is to
create and maintain software libraries that provide a predictable and
consistent interface to underlying platform- specific implementations. The
primary goal is to provide an API to which software developers may code
and be assured of predictable if not identical behaviour regardless of
the platform on which their software is built, relieving them of the need
to code special-case conditions to work around or take advantage of
platform-specific deficiencies or features.

Changes: Changes include the addition of a multicast API, extensions to
build against a number of LDAP toolkits, support for LDAP SSL/TLS and
client certificates, the addition of Solaris 10 "Event Ports" as a backend
for APR Pollset, and various fixes.

  by Sebien (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sebien/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 23:22

About: BasKet is a desktop organization tool inspired by DropDrawers (from
www.sigsoftware.com). It uses baskets and drawers for organizing various
objects, such as text, URLs, images, sounds, or other documents. Objects
in a basket can be edited, copied, moved, dragged, and so on. This allows
you to stay organized and free your desktop, or to take notes with various
types of content (not only text) in an easy way.

and Website), and baskets now get a 'search as you type' feature,
scrollbars, inline editing of text items, exportation to HTML, and
enhanced keyboard navigation. Data from other software now can be
imported. This release also features a new folder mirroring and an
enhanced stack system. There were also some bugfixes and usability

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the

[016] - Conary 0.13.3
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 14:46

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Tag handling was significantly reworked; the description-specific
actions went away, and were replaced by handler actions that get called for
handler or description changes. In addition, a bug that caused file tags
not to be considered on updates was fixed. All source files are now
committed to the repository, not just the ones that have been added with
the cvc add command. The repository now has the capability to log the
files added to the contents store.

About: Housekeeper is an application for managing household issues. It is
able to keep a list of food items, inlcuding their expiry dates, so you
always have an overview of what is going to be needed soon.

Changes: This release's main feature is the separation of convenience
foods from other food. This introduction of categories makes it a bit
easier to decide your next meal while not forgetting "supporting" food's

[027] - Howl 0.9.9
  by Scott Herscher (http://freshmeat.net/users/sculi2000/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 14:51

System :: Networking

About: Howl is a cross platform implementation of the Zeroconf zero
configuration networking standard. It includes daemons and a client side
SDK for registering, browsing, and resolving network services, and
assigning link local IP addresses without a DHCP server. On Windows
2000/XP, it includes a sidebar in Internet Explorer that allows users to
browse zeroconf-enabled Web and FTP servers.

Changes: This release fixes a bug where the build directory was not the
source directory, and fixes memory leaks on cleanup. Patches have been
added to make porting to operating systems other than Linux easier for
autoipd.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Database

About: IMAPEngine is an IMAP server that uses a tdbengine database
structure to store all accounts, messages, and mailboxes. This means it
has nearly no limits in numbers, sizes, and performance, and it uses
indexes to sort/find its data. IMAPEngine is IMAP4Rev1 compatible and also
has built-in support for the ACL, ID, IDLE, and UIDPLUS extensions. It is
not (yet) an MTA, but it retrieves incoming messages from different POP3
servers. An simple integrated Web interface makes account configuration
easy.

Changes: This release fixed a database handling bug that caused Mozilla
Thunderbird 1.0+ and probably several other IMAP clients to always receive
the very first message body in combination with email headers from other
messages. Another annoying bug that caused the server to hang when clients
sent the APPEND command too often in a row was aksi fixed.

[040] - mcache 1.1.0
  by John McCaskey (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmccaskey/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 15:07

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: mcache is a PHP extension providing an easy to use object- oriented
API for caching data to memcache-based servers. The extension is based on
the libmemcache C API, and is extremely fast. It has full support for
multiple servers as well. As such the extension is both faster, and more
feature full than the PECL standard memcache extension.

Changes: A bug was fixed where storing a value of the PHP type long,
double, or bool would result in the value being returned formatted as a
string on the get() call. Support was added for persistent memcache
objects/connections. This can significantly enhance performance in the
event of something like a server dying, as previously a TCP connection
would be attempted and wait for the connection timeout every page load.
The set(), replace(), and add() methods have been changed to not accept a
flags value.

About: The PHP JavaScript interpreter is intended to be embedded into
CMS/Wiki engines to allow users to inject server-side executable code as
Web site extensions. This is possible because scripts run safely in a

About: Pre Make Kit (PMK) aims to be a BSD alternative to GNU autoconf,

easy to use for users and developers. For better portability and
efficiency, all of the components are written in C. Requirements are a
POSIX system, a C compiler, a POSIX shell, and a make tool.

Changes: This release includes privilege separation for pmksetup when used
with root privileges. CPU detection support for IA64 and Alpha processors

[074] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.6.1

  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 09:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: A new slider widget (for Swing and Web/HTML clients) has been
added. Some minor bugs were corrected.

[075] - Wiclear 0.7-beta4
  by David Jobet (http://freshmeat.net/users/djobet/)
  Thu, Jan 27th 2005 03:36

About: Wiclear aims to provide a simple, small, and accessible wiki. It
supports the XHTML and CSS W3C specifications. There is a simple install
program and an admin panel. All content is classified via a tree-like
structure. The wiki in itself is easily themeable (same capabilities as
dotclear), is multilingual, commentable, and supports history, diffs, and
editions. There are several types of users: admins, moderators, and simple
users. Moderators and admins can edit ACLs to reduce the number of people
allowed to modify a particular page. They can remove comments or
particular version of the content. Admins can edit/delete users, create
groups, edit them, set global rights (anonymous post, anonymous comments,
etc.), change themes, etc.

Changes: This release added content deletion, a reworked language removal
system, and the ability to restore current content to the latest entry of
history. Preview is now optional and is configurable in admin panel. Fixes
were made to language management and UTF-8 support.
