[001] - abcm2ps 4.8.9 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 07:02

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release fixes two minor bugs and improves the music layout.

[004] - argtable 2.4
  by Stewart Heitmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/sheitman/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 16:42

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Argtable is an ANSI C library for parsing GNU style command line
arguments, as in "foo -abc -o myfile --help --count=7". It enables a
program's command line syntax to be defined in the source code as an array
of argtable structs. The command line is then parsed according to that
specification, and the resulting values are returned in those same structs
where they are accessible to the main program. The default parsing,
validation, and error reporting routines may be replaced by user-defined
callbacks if desired, and new argtable data types may be created to parse
user-defined argument types. The parsing itself is done using GNU getopt
and so is 100% GNU compatible.

Changes: Two new argument data types have been added: arg_date for parsing
date/time arguments, and arg_rex for string arguments against regular
expressions. Error reporting was improved to reduce extraneous error
messages. Bugfixes in the Windows Nmake files were incorporated. Much
additional documentation and example code is also provided.

[011] - CD Input and Control Library 0.72
  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 23:52

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.

Changes: The cdparanoia library and cdparanoia command are now included,
making this the only single-source cdparanoia that works on FreeBSD,
Cygwin, Solaris, BSDI, and GNU/Linux. The manual documentation and API
documentation (via doxygen) were reworked, the internal filesystem
structure was reorganized, and a number of platform-specific bugfixes and
fixes for C++ compilation were made.

[014] - CoaSim 3.0.3 (GUI)
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 14:22

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent process with
recombination and gene conversion under the assumption of exponential
population growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral recombination
graph for a given number of individuals and uses this to simulate samples
of SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The generated sample can
afterwards be separated in cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can accordingly also be used to
construct cases and control data sets for association studies.

Changes: When simulating recombination graphs with exponential growth, the
final coalescence time was drawn from an incorrect waiting time
distribution. This has now been corrected.

About: ComputeMode is a product that allows an organization HPC grid to be
extended through aggregation of unused computing resources. For instance,
ComputeMode allows a virtual cluster to be built using an organization's
employees' PCs while they are not being used. Practically, most PCs in

About: deb-install is a command line tool that can install or show
information about packages and files in several different formats.
Whenever a program is installed using deb-install, it is converted into a
deb package beforehand, and thus can be removed with a simple "apt-get
remove <name>". It currently supports .deb, .rpm, .dsc, and .tar/.zip
(source archives). Compression via gzip or bzip2 is handled automatically.
If a needed tool is missing, deb-install asks whether it should install it.

About: Debugtrace is a tool for printing execution traces that are helpful
for debugging. It can generate instruction or call traces. It shows every
instruction as it is executed, the values of registers that are written,
and the memory that is read and written. It uses instrumentation rather
than the debugging API, so it is much faster than doing the same thing
with gdb. You can customize it to your own debugging needs. The tool works
on Linux ARM, IA32, and EM64T.

Changes: This release adds support for tracing multithreaded programs,
accurate reporting of tailcalls, and many minor bugfixes.

About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web-based control panel for
hosting that can delegate the task of creating subdomains, email, and FTP
accounts to users for the domain names they own. It has support for many
programs, including bind 8 and 9, MySQL, Apache, PHP 4, qmail, Postfix,
Courier, Dovecot, ProFTPD, Webalizer, and mod-log-sql. It can also
generate backup scripts, calculation scripts, and config files using a
single system UID/GID, and monitor all traffic accounting per user and per
service. It is fully skinnable and translated into several languages.

Changes: With this version comes automatic PayPal payment with IPN
(Instant Payment Notification), which makes DTC have IAA (Instant Account
Activation). The email panel is now fully debugged and working. Some
internationalisations have also be made. This release is capable of being
the NS and MX backup server of any another DTC panel. It's now possible to
customize the DTC client session expire time, and have an SSL certificate
generated automatically by the panel's installer.

[083] - Ping Tunnel 0.53
  by Daniel Stodle (http://freshmeat.net/users/stoedle/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 09:50

Internet :: Proxy Servers
System :: Networking

About: Ping Tunnel is a tool for reliably tunneling TCP connections over
ICMP echo request and reply packets (commonly known as ping requests and
replies). It is useful for evading firewalls that, for whatever reason,
prevent outgoing TCP connections, but allow in- and outgoing ICMP packets.
The tunnel works by having a proxy run on a machine ping-able from the
inside of the firewall, with the client running on the local machine from
which TCP access is required.

Changes: This version adds support for timing out existing tunnels and
limiting the maximum number of tunnels. A number of small bugs have also
been fixed, hopefully enhancing stability for running many simultanous
tunnels. An unofficial Windows port is now also available from ptunnel's
homepage.

About: pkt is a universal XML packet archiver. It can manipulate files for
backing up documents, transferring them across networks, emailing them, and
sharing them by other means (p2p etc). It uses plugin filters to do the job
and handles virtually any format available if there is a plugin for it. It
handles encryption, compression, conversion, parity checking, decryption,
decoding, repairing, rebuilding, and other tasks using a universal file
format (XML-based). By default, all pkt output is in 7-bit ASCII which is
UTF encoded and is compatible with XML parsers. pkt files can be
disassembled, reassembled, and repaired by hand if necessary. pkt also
supports the use of 8-bit compressed XML packets for its archives using
one of several compression algorithms. In general, pkt will try to use the
best algorithms available.

Changes: The psuedorandom number generator in mindterm has been changed to
cryptographically secure rng. A problem with spinlock state when errors
were encountered in multithreading has been fixed. Support has been added
for SSH 2 and SSH 2 terminal emulation. A manual spinlock control has been

GNU libtool, and pkg-config. It uses data files instead of scripts to
limit the spreading of trojans in software packages. It's designed to be
easy to use for users and developers. For better portability and
efficiency, all of the components are written in C. Requirements are a
POSIX system, a C compiler, a POSIX shell, and a make tool.

Changes: This is a reliability release that fixes two minor bugs in
pmksetup that were introduced in the previous release.

About: Qolyester is a C++ implementation of the OLSR protocol for mobile
wireless ad hoc networks. It is meant to be enhanced with QoS features
from the QOLSR research group.

Changes: Many changes since the last freshmeat update. Most important is
the fact that now configuration details are taken care of automatically at
startup, making it easier to use. It should route/forward packets properly
out-of-the-box, provided no pre-existing routes that may cause problems
are present (remove any routes using the interfaces used by Qolyester to
be sure).

[089] - Redet 4.11
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 02:47

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) allows
the user to construct regular expressions and test them against input data
by executing any of a variety of search programs, editors, and programming
languages that make use of regular expressions. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. For each
program, a palette showing the available regular expression syntax is
provided. Selections from the palette may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be added to the
palette via an initialization file. As long as the underlying program
supports Unicode, UTF-8 Unicode is allowed in both test data and regular
expressions.

Changes: In this version, icon is now supported. Command line options
providing information, control over the reading of files on startup, and
control over debugging information have been added. On Unix systems
command line arguments will now work properly when the program is executed
directly as a script. The regular expression history is now appended to a
file called .redethist. If this file exists, it is now read by default on
startup and its contents placed in the history list. A bug in which
pressing the History button when the history list was empty triggered an
error has been fixed.

[090] - rlocate 0.2.0
  by Rasto Levrinc (http://freshmeat.net/users/rastol/)
  Mon, Jan 31st 2005 02:55

About: rlocate is an implementation of the "locate" command that is always
up-to-date. The database that the original locate uses is usually updated
only once a day, so newer files cannot be located right away. The behavior
of rlocate is the same as slocate, but it also maintains a diff database
that gets updated whenever a file is created or a directory is moved. The
rlocate kernel module can be compiled only with Linux 2.6 kernels.

Changes: This release moves traversing of directories to the daemon. This
makes searches faster.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that caused star to create incrementals
against the wrong reference level if the dump level sequence was 0, 1, 2,
0, 2, and a bug that caused star to overwrite "star-symtable" when an
empty incremental was restored. The next release will most likely be
star-1.5-final.

to changing the process privileges of client scripts to match their owners,
it goes beyond other wrappers by placing configurable ceilings on script
resource usage, avoiding unintentional and intentional denial of service
attacks. It also optionally allows the Webmaster to place clients' CGI
scripts in a chroot'ed shell restricted to the author's home directories.
