[001] - abcm2ps 4.8.11 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 07:24
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: A few minor bugs were fixed. The definition of informational
fields (like N:, I:, and H:) is now included in the PostScript output.

by Big Faceless Organization (http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 07:30
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

Printing
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.
Changes: Signature verification was fixed for the case where a document
was both signed and encrypted. The spec is silent on what to do in this
case and each handler does it differently, so the
SignatureHandler.isVariableEncrypted method was added to cover all
possibilities. Full support for Lab and calibrated Gray and RGB color
spaces was added. A fix was made for a bug introduced in 2.3.3 which
prevented the encryption of documents that were supposed to be encrypted
with metadata unencrypted but all rights enabled.

Web content without needing to learn HTML. It can also manage multiple Web
sites, RSS news feeds, document uploads, images and pullquotes, unlimited
user accounts with 5 levels of role-based permissions, and more.
Changes: All links that should open in new windows now do so. Occasional
error messages in printer-friendly pages that contained new-window links
were eliminated. Errors which occurred when checking disk space under
certain server configurations were eliminated. Errors which occurred when
publishing or unpublishing document downloads in certain server
configurations were eliminated.

by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 08:00
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Build requirements are now enforced. Pristine configuration files
are stored in the local SQL database so that they are handled within
transactions. Flavor comparison at the command line has been improved, and
you can now specify the flavor to cook the same way you specify a flavor to
update. Many other fixes were made.

by Solar Designer (http://freshmeat.net/users/solardiz/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 07:56
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
System :: Systems Administration
About: crypt_blowfish is an efficient implementation of a modern password
hashing algorithm, based on the Blowfish block cipher, provided via the
crypt(3) and a reentrant interface. It is compatible with bcrypt as used
in OpenBSD. It is adaptable to future processor performance improvements,
allowing you to arbitrarily increase the processing cost of checking a
password while still maintaining compatibility with your older password
hashes. The hashes it produces are several orders of magnitude stronger
than traditional Unix DES-based or FreeBSD-style MD5-based hashes.
Changes: The crypt(3) man page has been enhanced to include Solaris 10 and
NetBSD compatibility notes.

[019] - dsproxy 0.2.17.3
by Christian Wolff (http://freshmeat.net/users/scarabaeus/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 13:47
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
About: dsproxy emulates an OSS device that "virtualizes" itself so each
UID that opens /dev/dsp gets its own private sound device. At this point,
simultaneous reading of /dev/dsp by another process "samples" the data out
of dsproxy. The tagged audio data and ioctls stream may be saved to disk
locally as the example program does, retargeted over a network, pushed
into an effects generator (3-D sound), etc. The virtualization feature is
a stepping stone to adding sound to VNC on a per-desktop basis with each
user appearing to have total control over /dev/dsp. Most OSS ioctls are
implemented, so applications such as xmame and rvplayer7 may be retargeted
through dsproxy.

displays running time.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: The Genetic Algorithm Utility Library (GAUL) is a programming
library for evolutionary algorithms. Both steady-state and
generation-based evolution is supported, together with the island model.
GAUL supports the Darwinian, Lamarckian, and Baldwininan evolutionary
schemes. Standard mutation, crossover, and selection operators are
provided, while code hooks additionally allow custom operators. It
provides data structures and functions for handling and manipulation of
the data required for a genetic algorithm. Additional stochastic
algorithms are provided for comparison to the genetic algorithms. Much of
the functionality is also available through a simple S-Lang interface.
Changes: Numerous additions and improvements were made. Most notably,
island-model genetic algorithms are now available as parallel versions
using either MPI or pthreads. Several new demonstration programs were

Office/Business :: Groupware
Office/Business :: Office Suites
About: ScheduleWorld is an Internet address book and calendar client and
server service that uses open standards to interoperate with most
software. It supports SyncML and provides a J2ME calendar client, an
Atom/RSS blog reader, TV listings, weather schedules, and time sheets.
Changes: Sync4j was upgraded to the latest version. A major SyncML
integration rewrite and performance optimizations were done. Initial vCal
support for SyncML devices was added. The SyncML localTime option was
added to support broken phones. LDIF contacts can be imported from
Mozilla, Thunderbird, Evolution, and similar programs. Mozilla, Evolution,
and Outlook LDAP schemas are almost completely supported. Lots of little
GUI enhancements were made. A much smaller (57KB) J2ME version was

[068] - Sherlock Holmes 3.4
by Robert Spalek (http://freshmeat.net/users/rspalek/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 08:42
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Text Processing :: Indexing
About: Sherlock Holmes is a modular system for gathering and indexing
textual data and searching in it. The most popular application is, of
course, indexing of Web pages ranging from small Web sites to whole
top-level domains, but other data sources, parsers, and user interfaces
can be added easily.
Changes: The license has been changed from proprietary to the GPL, so the
program is no longer limited to 100,000 documents. Support for transparent
compression was added, and the bucket-file and the indices typically shrink
by 30%. The indexer now assigns link texts to the pages and the search
server can search by them. The program has been heavily optimized and
scaled up. Many other minor features have also been added.

as well as edit existing documents using a simple Web interface. Features
include a multi-version workflow system, a forms based editor, WYSIWYG
editor integration (Kupu), sophisticated access management, and image
manipulation. Silva is built on top of the Zope web application platform.

German, and Dutch localizations. A subscription feature was added to
receive email notifications of new publications of content (per document
or per whole branch of the site). Version management was improved,
allowing you to examine older versions, compare them side by side, and
revert to older versions. The documentation was updated. A package was
made available with all extra Silva products you may need. Bugfixes were
made.

[071] - SkProd 2.0.0
by Arnaud de Bossoreille de Ribou (http://freshmeat.net/users/bozo/)
Tue, Feb 22nd 2005 09:44
About: SkProd provides a way of building binary data for applications.
SkProd has been historically developed for publishing tools. However, it
can potentially be used for any application that needs some data to be
compiled. The SkProd language emphasizes data flows. Instead of using
imperative commands like if/for/while, a SkProd program describes how to
produce data streams, and what operations (filters) should be applied on
those data streams. Therefore, a typical SkProd program is not a sequence
of functions, but rather is a tree whose roots are the input data streams,
and whose leaves are the output data streams.
