Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: adesklets is an interactive Imlib2 console for the X Window system.
It provides to scripted languages a clean and simple way to write great
looking, mildly interactive desktop integrated graphic applets (aka
"desklets"). It can also be used as a command line oriented graphics
editor, a bit similar to ImageMagick, but with different functionality.
Changes: Documentation was added for Python programmers and the FAQ was
expanded slightly.

[004] - ARSC Really Simple Chat 3.0.1
by Manuel Kiessling (http://freshmeat.net/users/pgod/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 08:13
Communications :: Chat
About: ARSC Really Simple Chat is a Web chat system that uses PHP and
MySQL. It works with every browser in existence, even text-based ones, and
it uses the server push technique or, if possible, its own socket server.
It is very simple to install and use ARSC. It includes some important
features, such as operators, kick-ing, whispering, and more. Multiple
rooms and different languages are available. To run ARSC on your site, you
need a Web server that understands PHP, and can connect to a MySQL
database.
Changes: A script was added to avoid the case where the session ID of a
user is sent within the referer when clicking on an external URL posted
into the chatroom. This is done in order to avoid session theft. Rooms may
now contain special characters, and a faster and more compatible color
picker was added. A Bosnian language file is now included, and the
browser_push version uses less bandwith. Registered users can now re-login
quickly, even if their former session did not time out correctly.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: This release adds a C-like atexit function, which is now used to
implicitly add a shipout command on exit if no previous shipout commands
have been executed. The documentation and examples have been updated to
remove any unnecessary shipout() calls. The scaling of errorbars and the
XEquals and YEquals axes (e.g. for logarithmic graphs) was also fixed. The
selection highlighting in the GUI xasy was improved.

kinds of revenue streams for your digital properties.
Changes: Processing efficiency was improved by only converting once from
list data to string. Headers in data files have changed to unify
data-handling and to make the PayPal email data-dependent. The Web log now
cleans up after itself by removing entries for deleted files. The example
data directory and site.html were updated.

[014] - BIRD 1.0.11
by Ondrej Feela Filip (http://freshmeat.net/users/feela/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 04:49
Internet
System :: Networking
About: BIRD is a dynamic routing daemon for UNIX-like systems. It should
support all routing protocols used in the contemporary Internet, such as
BGP, OSPF, RIP, and their IPv6 variants (except for OSPFv3 which is still
under development). It also features a very flexible configuration
mechanism, and a route filtering language.
Changes: In this release, the OSPF code was slightly debugged, and bug in
single-hop virtual links was fixed. OSPF also now works correctly with
stub areas. The intelligent reconfiguration of OSPF is working again.
There were various minor enhancements and bugfixes.

[015] - Brutal File Manager 1.2
by Daniel Forchheimer (upiom) (http://freshmeat.net/users/upiom/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 22:12
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters
About: BFM (Brutal Filemanager) is a mixture between a filemanager and a
3D shoot-'em-up game. In fact, you can't really manage the files yet, just
shoot them up. Be carefull when using BFM! Some weapons, such as the
shotgun, have spread. So files you didn't really aim at might get ...
wasted. Start BFM with the '-s' for safemode and your files shall stay
unhurt. It is written in Java and uses the Java3D API.
Changes: This is the first release in over one year, so it has accumulated
a lot of small changes and bugfixes. The major changes are two new massivly
destructive weapons, a blood splatter effect which occurs when files are
hit, the display of image files as textures in the room, better aiming and
sniper capabilities, and the ability to see the filename of the file you're
aiming at. There is also an teleporter to quickly trevel between
directories.

[016] - BSAX-J 0.8.0
by Gregor N. Purdy (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregor/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 16:24
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: While the author of BSAX-J has not yet come to a final conclusion
about the need for a binary XML format, BSAX is his idea of one possible
encoding that leverages other XML prior art (SAX events and UTF-8, in
particular). It is complete in that it can be used to perform round-trip
conversions from textual XML to SAX events to BSAX binary streams, and
back to SAX events and textual XML. The test code in the distribution does
exactly that for a simple example XML file, and measures the difference in
file size (the file is slightly smaller for the BSAX encoding of the
sample file) and the difference in read time (the read time is
significantly faster for the sample file).
Changes: The streaming encoder included in this distribution is very
simple, and that is on purpose (smarter compliant encoders are possible).
Before a 1.0.0 version is released, one new operation definition is
planned to support pre-arranged bootstrap string tables. Once it reaches
version 1.0.0, it is hoped that it will have encoders and decoders for
other languages such as Perl, Python, and Ruby.

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: BuGLe is a tool for debugging applications that use OpenGL. It
supports the validation of calls, breakpoints on calls or sets of calls,
examination of state, logging of calls, and more.
Changes: This version is a major update. The code generator, state
manager, and object tracker have all been rewritten and work a lot better.
Substantial changes have been made to the call dispatcher to reduce
overhead. Almost all of OpenGL 2.0 is now supported. It should also be
slightly more portable, due to the use of ltdl to load modules.

Information Management
About: Bugzero is a Web-based bug tracking, defect tracking, issue
tracking, and change management system used in a distributed team
environment to track software bugs, hardware defects, test cases, or any
other issues. It can also be used equally well as a helpdesk customer
support, trouble ticketing, or email management system to collect and
manage customer feedbacks, incidents, requests, and issues. It is easy to
use, but still flexible and adaptive, and can be configured to fit to your
organization's unique business process and workflow.
Changes: Automatic assignment based on assignable can now be disabled by
making the Responsible field mandatory so that a responsible must be
explicitly selected. The order of the color key legend in the report
charts was reversed and a typo was corrected. Exception handling in the
email module was improved.

About: Constrict is a Python library for parsing DNS messages using the

Changes: The primary change here is a small Py_None reference count issue
which would corrupt None refcount. Also, the "type" member of DNSFlags
objects will be either "question" or "answer" instead of the old "query"
and "response" since the former pair matches RR section names and is thus
easier to remember.

by Dan Stromberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/strombrg/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 22:01
About: fallback-reboot is a last resort, when you need to remotely reboot
a computer. It attempts to maximize its ability to get the job done by
completely avoiding touching the hard disk; it opens no files, and it
locks itself into memory to avoid swapping/paging. It also does not fork
or exec. It includes optional cryptography.
Changes: A minor DOS attack was fixed. This vulnerability was caused by
writing daemon status to a potentially nonexistent tty. The client now
understands cleartext, SHA-1, and RIPEMD-160, but the daemon by default
only understands RIPEMD-160, or cleartext if you have no libcrypto
available. The daemon should now know how to reread
/.fallback-reboot-passwd if it receives a SIGUSR1 signal.

[042] - ipsvd 0.11.0
by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 11:34
System :: Networking
About: ipsvd is a set of Internet protocol service daemons for TCP/IP and
UDP/IP. A daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket; for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. The daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections; based on the client's
IP address or hostname, they can run different programs, set a different
environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency limit. On
Linux the network connection optionally can be encrypted using SSL3. ipsvd
can be used to run services usually run by inetd or tcpserver. Normally the
daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or daemontools' supervise.
Changes: The sslio program supports server mode as well as client mode on
Mac OS X, not only on Linux; see the installation instructions on how to
enable it in the build and testing process. A check for sslio has been
added to complete the package's self-tests.

[061] - N-View 3.0 beta 3 (Stable)
by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/ullrich/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 14:42
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: N-View is a network monitor for small and medium-sized networks. It
features automatic scanning of subnets for host addresses, monitoring of
ICMP responses from all hosts, signalling of timeouts and delays in the
GUI and by mail, a portscanner, an SNMP client (MIB browser and trap
receiver), a graphical display of network traffic for network interfaces,
connectivity to hosts by telnet, HTTP browser, or an arbitrary external
program (such as ssh), printing of network diagrams, automatic generation
of HTML pages, and more.
Changes: In this beta release, a MIB parser was added. The internal
repository for SNMP OIDs can be completed by parsing additional MIB
definition files, which are provided by network equipment vendors. The
completed OID repository can be stored and restored within the network
settings files. This OID repository can be transferred between several
network settings by parsing those *.nvw files, where network settings with
custom OIDs are stored.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: The number perl script will print the English name of a number. One
can print names of extremely large numbers (e.g. 1e1234567). Number can be
run on the command line, or as a CGI script when run as 'number.cgi'.
Number prints names in both the American and European naming system. It
can also print the decimal expansion of a number in either naming system.
Changes: The extra "t" was removed in numbers from one centillion (10^303)
up until one quadringentillion (10^1201) as well as in all numbers that are
a multiple of 1000 Latin powers beyond those values. Note that the on-line

[067] - ObjectScript 2.6 (Stable)
by Rob Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/robatti/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 04:26
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: ObjectScript is a general purpose object-oriented programming
language. It is designed to be simple to learn, easy to use, and powerful,
combining the convenience of an interactive interpreter with many of the
features of Java: a simple Java-like syntax, javadoc support, a class
system (single inheritance), private vs. public fields and methods,
exceptions, synchronization and threading, regular expressions, etc. Since
it can be interactively interpreted, ObjectScript can be used to debug or
learn Java systems. And since it supports extending Java classes and
interfaces, it can add sophisticated scripting to an existing Java
application.
Changes: This release features a context-sensitive popup menu in the
editor/file-browser. The compiler now generates a single .class per .os
file, rather than one per function (faster startup, reduced .cache size).
The file chooser/browser no longer collapses when a file is added or
removed in the parent directory. The "in-front" view is now preserved
within a dock. There were also many bugfixes.

Mon, Feb 21st 2005 19:22
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) allows
the user to construct regular expressions and test them against input data
by executing any of a variety of search programs, editors, and programming
languages that make use of regular expressions. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. For each
program, a palette showing the available regular expression syntax is
provided. Selections from the palette may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be added to the
palette via an initialization file. As long as the underlying program
supports Unicode, UTF-8 Unicode is allowed in both test data and regular
expressions.
Changes: This release contains numerous small improvements. It is now
possible to mark selected entries in the history list so that they can
easily be found later. A command was added for clearing the history list.
Commands were added for saving the test data and comparison data. Options
controlling details of Perl and Python regular expressions, feature test

[097] - SquidClamAV Redirector 1.6.3
by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 16:09
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.
Changes: This release fixes a mismatched statement which could lead to
recursions when trying to get the protocol and an obsolete workaround from
BufferScan which added a linefeed to the file, causing some viruses not to
be detected by ClamAV (including clam.exe).

System :: Logging
About: Unix Mobile Agents is a generic, flexible, easy to use mobile
agent architecture implemented in a set of bash scripts. This design is
made to be trivial to deploy and setup. Agents can be configured to
traverse the network in sorted order, in user defined order, or as a
random walk. They can also run in a repeated loop, or in a single pass
through the network. Connections are made via public-key SSH
authentication, and the screen utility is used to allow agents to run
without requiring terminals.
Changes: This release added a "beaconing" capability that allows you to
track the agents progress through the network. The beaconing is generic,
and can be used from within agents to send arbitrary messages home. The
method by which agents migrate was modified so that all tasking is pushed
ahead of the final SSH call.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: XDBCMS is a Web-based, multi-user CMS that can manage any number of
Web sites, each site with any number of pages, and each site organised in a
tree-based menu that can be any depth. Where XDBCMS differs from most
content management systems is that it actually generates a stand-alone Web
site, which requires no database to drive it, can be 'released' to any Web
server, and would be able to cope with very large numbers of users. For
the authors, it features a WYSIWYG editor, similar to MS-Word in
appearance, allowing full control over the format (tables, fonts,
graphics, etc.) of each individual page. It allows multiple authors and
features a group-based security system.
Changes: This release brings in major functional updates. Users have the
ability to define cascading style sheets for use in the tinyMCE editor. A
DIV tag encompassing the whole page has been introduced that is
addressable from within the stylesheet to affect borders and background.
The user can specify that a particular page should not appear within the
generated menus to create intro pages. The tinyMCE editor is updated to
version 1.42, which introduces table definitions. A bugfix has been
incorporated that corrects missing HEAD items from generated HTML.
