[001] - /etc/net 0.0.1 (Configurator)
  by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 07:38

System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: This is a first draft, and it does not actually configure
anything.

About: BulkWatch is a utility that monitors sendmail's logs and takes a
specified action when an IP has exceeded your configured maximum settings.
You can specify that users may send X messages in X number of seconds.
Email in excess of that would trigger an action, which can be any of the
following: display an alert to the screen in foreground mode; log an alert
to syslog; email an alert to a predefined email address; or run an external
command with the IP and number of messages as arguments.

Changes: All configuration was moved to a separate file. The ability to
create multiple queues was added, each with its own configuration and its
own CIDR blocks to watch. with separate ignore, thresholds, and actions.

[007] - Cyber Socket Server 1.1
  by Cyberlot (http://freshmeat.net/users/cyberlot/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 10:16

Communications :: Chat

About: Cyber Socket Server is a PHP-based socket server supporting a
module expansion API. Out of the box, it acts as a generic XML socket
server that should work with any program that needs a socket server for
operation. A fully functional chatroom module is included as a true
example of what can be done with this server. Supporting features like
login/password, guest logins, banning, ignoring, and most recently
multi-room support, it provides a good framework for understanding flash
and PHP interaction.

Changes: The documentation has been improved slightly. Changed from
explode to regex handling of input for future growth/features.

[011] - DictEm 0.0.4
  by Aleksey Cheusov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vle/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 13:39

About: DictEm is a dict client for GNU Emacs. It uses a console dict
client and implements all functions of the client part of tje DICT
protocol (RFC-2229), e.g. looking up words and definitions, obtaining a
list of available strategies etc. Unlike dictionary.el, it widely uses
autocompletion that is used for selecting a dictionary and search
strategy. It provides several hooks that may be used for buffer
postprocessing. Built-in hyperlinking and a highlighting mechanism are
based on this ability. It supports accessing virtual dictionaries. With
DictEm functions, a user can easily extend its functionality.

Changes: This release uses the default query as an initial input, which
may be very useful. To disable this behaviour, set
'dictem-empty-initial-input' to 't'. See (describe-variable
'dictem-empty-initial-input) and REAME example #11.
dictem-default-database (dictem-default-strategy) variables override the
value of the dictem-last-database (dictem-last-strategy) variable, i.e.
when dictem-default-xxx is set to non-nil, this database (strategy) is
always used by default, otherwise the last used database (strategy) is
used. Some minor bugs have been fixed.

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Distributed Multiplatform Framework is a component-based
programming framework using XML (or currently a hardcoded variant) as the
repository. The samples are implemented either in console or wxWidgets.
This shows the independence of the GUI or UI.

Changes: This release includes the first steps for porting to Mac OS X.
The source compiles partially under Mac OS X. The GUI and UI samples and
the database module have not yet been tested. Bugfixes were made.

[013] - DOLFIN 0.5.3
  by Dolfin Code Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/dolfin/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 18:42

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: DOLFIN is the C++ interface of the FEniCS project for the
Automation of Computational Mathematical Modeling (ACMM). It includes
tools for the solution of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and
partial differential equations (PDE). It is developed at the Toyota
Technological Institute at Chicago and the Chalmers University of
Technology.

Changes: The new system based on FFC and PETSc is now in place:
variational forms are evaluated through FFC and the linear algebra is
handled by a new set of easy-to-use C++ wrappers for PETSc (but far from
complete). Only the Poisson module has been moved to the new system, but
more modules will follow. Other important changes include the addition of
mono-adaptive cG(q) and dG(q) ODE-solvers that can also handle implicit
and complex ODEs. A homotopy solver that automatically generates the
homotopy for a given (polynomial) nonlinear system has also been added.

  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 02:47

Communications
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: GeboGebo is a wiki system written for tdbengine. It stores all data
in a local database structure and thus provides an indexed fulltext search.
It uses a simple syntax, and has user lists, pages history, a missing pages
list, and a recent changes list. Image and file upload are possible, but
can be disabled. This allows it to work as a small document management
system. A blacklist allows you to lock existing pages from being edited or
new pages from being created. It can also be run in static mode, where all
pages are additionally held as static HTML pages.

Changes: RSS feeds can now be set up for certain pages as well as on the
whole wiki. Macros and plugins can now also be embedded in the templates,
causing them to be executed on all pages instead of only certain ones. An
export interface allows a format-independent export of either a single
page or the whole wiki's content. If the complete content is exported, it
is packed into one file for easy download. Raw and a MediaWiki-formatted
exports are currently supported. ModRewrite is now explicitly supported,
so wiki links can become shorter if desired.

[029] - libextractor 0.4.2
  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 01:22

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), StarOffice, OpenOffice, MAN, DVI, MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2), OGG, WAV,
JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, DEB, RPM, TAR(.GZ), ZIP, Real, QT, MPEG, RIFF (AVI),
ASF, and ELF. Various additional MIME types are detected. libextractor can
also be used to compute hash functions (SHA-1, MD5, ripemd160). A Java
binding (JNI) is available.

Changes: This release fixes some bugs in the ID3, PDF, PNG, and REAL
extractors. The REAL extractor now also handles the new Helix formats.
libextractor can now also be used to extract thumbnails from images.

  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 07:35

Software Development :: Debuggers
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: ngrep strives to provide most of GNU grep's common features,
applying them to the network layer. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will
allow you to specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions to match
against data payloads of packets. It currently recognizes TCP, UDP, ICMP,
IGMP, and Raw protocols across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP, FDDI, Token Ring,
802.11 and null interfaces, and understands bpf filter logic in the same
fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop.

Changes: ngrep now builds from the same source tree for all platforms,
including Win32. New drop_privs logic was introduced after problems were
reported with the SPC version. An off-by-one bug which caused ngrep to
exit one packet early with "-A" was fixed. A problematic cfgtest for an
old broken-redhat-glibc UDP header was fixed. ngrep now sets a pcap filter
"ip" by default if one is not specified. A header offset fix was made for
802.11 processing. Support for IGMP and Raw type packets was added.
Support for the latest versions of libpcap, winpcap, and PCRE was added.
autoconf was updated to 2.59, and config.guess and config.sub were updated
to the latest versions.

[042] - Off-the-Record Messaging 2.0.1

  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 18:37

Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
Security :: Cryptography

About: Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging is a gaim plugin which allows you to
have private conversations over the instant messaging system of your
choice. It provides encryption, which prevents someone who intercepts your
instant messages from reading them; authentication, which ensures that the
correspondent is who you think it is; and perfect forward secrecy, which
ensures that no previous conversation is compromised if you lose control
of your private keys.

Changes: This release adds default and per-buddy policy selection: never
use OTR, OTR only if manually requested, automatically start OTR if
possible, or refuse to not use OTR. It now resends the last message if it
caused a re-keying. OTR control messages are no longer displayed as if
they were received as IM messages. There is a new multi-page UI. Users
can send a control message to a buddy if a private conversation is
terminated. It now removes people without fingerprints from the Known
Fingerprints list. The column heads in the Known Fingerprints list now
sort properly.

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Open RObot COntrol Software (Orocos) framework applies
software patterns in C++ to achieve real-time execution of software
components and provides an infrastructure to quickly integrate them in a
real-time operating system such as RTAI or RTLinux, although it can be
tested on normal Linux systems. It is designed to appeal to roboticists.
See the Orocos project homepage for an automated download script.

Changes: The PeriodicThread (re-)configuration for RTAI/LXRT was fixed. A
code review was undertaken for the time conversion algorithms, and an

  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 09:03

About: OpenPKG is a flexible and powerful software packaging facility that
eases installation and administration of Unix software across several
platforms. Consolidating different vendor approaches into a unified
architecture, it assists in administration of large networks previously
complicated by nonconformant systems. It uses RPM to provide an additional
system layer on top of the operating system. It is fully self-contained (no
RPM pre-installation is required), installs itself by means of a tricky
bootstrapping procedure with minimal operating system intrusion, and
supports multiple installation instances.

Changes: This release consists of 545 packages selected from a pool of
over 850. The major technical efforts for this release were spent on the
porting of all packages to the now officially supported Unix platform Sun
Solaris 10 on both Intel and SPARC architectures.

System

About: PyKota is a full featured, internationalized, centralized, and
extensible print quota system for CUPS and LPRng. It supports both
PostgreSQL and OpenLDAP as the quota database backend. This software
features most of what you might expect from a modern print quota and
accounting solution. Its flexibility and configurability greatly eases its
integration into your own computing environment.

Changes: Many improvements and new features were added. The most notable
are an integrated and customizable bannering system for CUPS, a
Web-enabled data dumper which exports the database in a consistent way
independently of the database backend being used, TLS and automated
reconnections support for LDAP, automated rejection of duplicate print
jobs, an email gateway, and an overcharging (or undercharging) factor for
users. Turkish and Traditional Chinese translations are now included.

About: rfs is a shell script for creating and updating a local spare
system disk. The main goal is to recover a working system after a crash
quickly. In this case, "quickly" means the time it takes to reboot the
machine. rfs stands for "replication of filesystems". Like rsyncbackup,
rfs is built on top of rsync.

Changes: This release is less sophisticated and more robust than 1.x
versions: if a crash occurs, put the cloned disk in place of the source
disk and reboot.

About: Safe Strings is a small C library that handles C strings in a safe
way. The functions of this library look at the necessary space for the
operations and try to reserve that space (with malloc or realloc). The
functions only begin working with their tasks when the memory allocation
is successful.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Social Networks Visualiser (SocNetV) reads network data from a file
(pajek or sociomatrix) and displays the network on screen. It lets the user
interact with network actors (nodes) and their relations (edges/arcs). It
can calculate rudimentary network statistics such as density, diameter,
etc, as well as network and actor properties such as centralities,
distance, and components.

Changes: Uniform random network is now really a random process. Bugfixes
were made. Changing a node label is now an "on the fly" process. Filtering
edges by their weights is now supported. Layout by centrality is now more
comprehensive: a background circle is drawn for every centrality value.
Arcs/Edges calculation is now correct.

  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 18:42

Text Editors
Utilities

About: Traditional vi is derived from the 4BSD source and includes support
for modern operating systems, 8-bit input, multi-byte character encodings
like UTF-8, and features demanded by POSIX.2. It contains few additions
beyond this, so it is of interest for those who look for a small but
well-defined vi implementation close to that of most commercial Unix
systems. It also has some features to cope with primitive terminals or
slow connections.

Changes: Many East Asian multibyte encodings are now supported.
Traditional regular expressions can now be used with multi- byte
characters. When the 'ignorecase' option is toggled, saved regular
expressions are now updated accordingly again. The display is now updated
correctly again when a tabulator is inserted at the beginning of a line. A
lot of minor issues concerning multibyte character support and POSIX
conformance have been fixed.

Internet
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Networking

About: webCDwriter can be used to make the CD- and DVD-writer(s) connected
to a Linux box available to all users in your network. It consists of the
server CDWserver and the clients webCDcreator and rcdrecord. CDWserver
stores the files transmitted by the clients, reserves the CD-writer and
controls the CD-writer using cdrecord. webCDcreator is a Java applet that
runs within your browser or by Java Web Start, assists you when putting
together a CD, and transmits the files. Finally rcdrecord is a command
line client that tries to offer the functionality of cdrecord over the
network with full multi-user support.

Changes: This is a bugfix release that fixes a serious bug concerning the
selection of writers in multi-writer systems. In addition, it contains
some small backports from the development branch.

  by Karl Runge (http://freshmeat.net/users/runge/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 07:56

Communications :: Conferencing
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: x11vnc is a program that allows one to remotely view and interact
with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical
monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is similar to
WinVNC and is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and
depend on a very small set of standard libraries. It supports a growing
number of command line options, such as -nofb for dual- headed mode with
Win2VNC. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.

Changes: The algorithm for handling XFIXES cursors with alpha channel
transparency has been greatly improved, eliminating ugly black fuzz for
translucent cursors. Exact cursor alpha blending is now available for
certain usage modes. The "-solid" option improves performance by setting
the background to a solid color when VNC clients are connected. The
effective user can be switched with the "-users" option when started as
root. The "-input" option enables fine-tuning of the allowed types of user
input for VNC clients. A less daunting GUI is presented when launched with
"-gui ez".

[073] - Yeemp Encrypted Messaging Program 0.9.13
  by Deekoo L. (http://freshmeat.net/users/deekoo/)
  Thu, Feb 24th 2005 01:17

Communications :: Chat

About: Yeemp is a decentralized instant messaging system. It uses GPG over
SSL for encryption, and UTF-8 to enable non-Latin text to be transferred.
The X client can request and receive webcam feeds. The clients include
support for Japanese, Cyrillic, and Ogham input, as well as direct UTF-8.
Yeemp includes a command-line client, an X client, a server, and a simple
Web-based client. The clients can also use the AIM and ICQ protocols.

Changes: A bug that would crash the X client when it attempted to
word-wrap messages containing especially long lines was fixed. The console
contact editor now behaves better. Some cosmetic bugs were fixed in the
contact status display. A contact's status is now marked as unknown if the
plugin for their protocol is disabled. Some other minor bugs were fixed.
