[001] - AcpiTool 0.2.7
  by DLeemans (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleemans/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 11:06

System
System :: Systems Administration

About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get/set acpi values. Hence, a computer running a Linux kernel from the
2.4.x or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.

Changes: A bugfix for thermal zone reporting (info for the 2nd thermal
zone, if available, was wrong). A quirk for flaky Dell batteries has been
added (reported things like being charged up to 107%). Battery capacity
loss is only displayed if there really is capacity loss. The configure
script now tries to guess your arch and no longer defaults to -march=i686.
Help text has been adapted for the -F option (toggles the fan on Toshiba
laptops).

[002] - Album Cover Art Downloader 1.5.0
  by Sami Kyöstilä (http://freshmeat.net/users/kamaswami/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 04:23

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping

About: Album Cover Art Downloader will go through your collection of music
albums and for each one download a set of matching cover images for you to
choose from. It makes the selected image usable for programs such as KDE,
Windows Media Player, etc.

Changes: The user interface was reworked to organize music files by
albums instead of directories. The program will no longer hang with large
collections. The startup time was improved dramatically with caching. A
configuration dialog was added for easier customization. The Windows
version now uses the free Qt/Win32 Free Edition.

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: In Armagetron, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can
only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after
you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are
trying to do the same to you. If you are fast enough, you may be able to
trap them, but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close
to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations
followed by action-packed close combat!

Changes: This release includes fixed for security issues that were
uncovered recently, as well as fixes for various annoying bugs and
improvements to the network code.

  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 22:11

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: This release adds several new features, including arbitrary data
markers for graphs, color density images, and palette frames. Four
predefined palettes are included in palette.asy. Bugs in the secondary
axis and tick selection routines were fixed, along with a numerical
precision bug in the extension routine in math.asy. Compound paths are now
deep copied by the drawing routines. Min and max functions for 2d and 3d
real arrays were also added. The "#" format specifier may now be used to
allow trailing zeros. Some minor optimizations were made, and the pstoedit
patch was updated.

[008] - ATA over Ethernet driver for Linux 2.6-6
  by Ed Cashin at Coraid (http://freshmeat.net/users/ecashinCoraid/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 10:15

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: The driver supports multiple devices with the same MAC address,
allowing a host to export multiple vblades. The build system and the
documentation have been updated and improved. Support for udev has been
added. Disk statistics are now maintained. There are minor bugfixes.

About: ByteName is a tool that for each byte of the input prints a line
consisting of the byte offset, the hex value of the byte, the octal value
of the byte, and its ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) name. For values below 0x7F,
this is the same as ASCII. A command line flag suppresses printing of
lines corresponding to ASCII characters, which is useful for locating
stray non-ASCII codes.

[021] - Cowloop 2.14
  by AT Consultancy (http://freshmeat.net/users/atconsultancy/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 04:19

About: The cowloop-driver is a copy-on-write loop driver (block device)
which can be used on top of any other block driver. It shields the lower
driver from any write access. Instead, it diverts all write-accesses to an
arbitrary regular file, called the cowfile. When a modified block is read
again later on, the cowloop-driver obtains the block from the cowfile,
while non-modified blocks are obtained from the original read-only device.
This mechanism allows block-devices to be used in a read-write fashion
without modifying the underlying block-device itself.

Changes: Support for 254 cowdevices to be used in parallel, where every
cowdevice consists of a read-only file and related cowfile. Support for
read-only files and cowfiles larger than 2 Gbytes was added.

[045] - Hilbert II 0.01.06

  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 03:50

Documentation
Education
Internet

About: The Goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. Any proof of a theorem in this "mathematical web" could be
drilled down to the very elementary rules and axioms. To make it more than
a huge number of logical correct formulas, it also contains information in
"common mathematical language". Think of an incredible number of
mathematical textbooks with hyperlinks, and each of its proofs could be
verified by *Hilbert II*. For each theorem, the dependency of other
propositions, definitions, and axioms could be easily derived.

Changes: This release contains a first specification of XML files that
have mathematical content. The main structure of a qedeq XML file looks
like the LaTeX book format. This release can also produce LaTeX files out
of qedeq XML files. Two qedeq samples are included: the project handbook
and a mathematical example. Beside the XSD verification no further
checking is done. The precondition to start the program is a Java Runtime
Environment, at least version  1.4.

  by Dscho (http://freshmeat.net/users/dscho/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 06:43

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: LibVNCServer is a library that makes it easy to make a VNC server.
All you do is provide a frame buffer and some I/O functions, and call a
function each time the frame buffer changes. It supports all encodings
known, including tight, zlib, ZRLE, and cursor encodings. It also includes
the HTTP server from Xvnc, so you can start a java viewer by surfing to
http://my.vnc.server:5801 or similar. It includes a beta version of
LibVNCClient, which makes it easy to make a VNC client. Also included is
LinuxVNC, which is to the Linux console as WinVNC is to the Windows
desktop.

Changes: This release contains the newest x11vnc and bugfixes for the
libraries. The API was affected only in two places: the signature of
rfbSetCursor has changed as a consequence of improved cursor handling, and
a new structure member was introduced (pointerClient), which was
erroneously a static variable before. Most importantly, RPM building was
fixed, and cursor handling was fixed so that both clients with and without
local cursor support can be handled by the same server. An alpha version of
alpha cursor support is available.

[062] - Linux Intrusion Detection System 2.2.1rc1 for kernel 2.6.11 (2.6)
  by Huagang Xie (http://freshmeat.net/users/xhg/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 03:36

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) is a patch which
enhances the kernel's security by implementing a reference monitor and
Mandatory Access Control (MAC). When it is in effect, chosen file
access, all system/network administration operations, any capability use,
raw device, memory, and I/O access can be made impossible even for root.
You can define which programs can access specific files. It uses and
extends the system capabilities bounding set to control the whole system
and adds some network and filesystem security features to the kernel to
enhance the security. You can finely tune the security protections
online, hide sensitive processes, receive security alerts through the
network, and more.

Changes: This release updates the Kconfig to make the LIDS kernel options
configuration easier, and is upgraded to use kernel 2.6.11.

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: NSA Security-enhanced Linux is a set of patches to the Linux kernel
and some utilities to incorporate a strong, flexible mandatory access
control architecture into the major subsystems of the kernel. It provides
a mechanism to enforce the separation of information based on
confidentiality and integrity requirements, which allows threats of
tampering and bypassing of application security mechanisms to be addressed
and enables the confinement of damage that can be caused by malicious or
flawed applications. It includes a set of sample security policy
configuration files designed to meet common, general-purpose security
goals.

Changes: This release is based on Linux 2.6.11. The SELinux kernel patch
for 2.6.11 includes enhanced MLS support, changes to the execute-related
permission checking for legacy binaries, and an extension to the
/proc/pid/attr API to allow use by scripts. Enhanced MLS support has been
merged into the userspace libraries and tools. The libraries and tools
have been modified to allow local customization of file contexts and users
without requiring policy sources, and to preserve certain types that are
marked as being customizable upon relabels.

About: Sajax is a simple toolkit to expose functions in your PHP scripts
as JavaScript stubs which can be called by the browser to do work on the
server without refreshing the page. It utilizes XMLHttpRequest to make the
magic happen. This kind of technology, generally known as remote scripting
or "Ajax," is becoming popular and is used extensively by Google (GMail,
Google Suggests, Google Maps) and others to provide another level of
interactivity within Web pages.

Changes: A Lua backend has been added. A bug in the PHP long tags code has
been fixed.

software. It supports SyncML and provides a J2ME calendar client, an
Atom/RSS blog reader, TV listings, weather schedules, and time sheets.

Changes: This release features more vCal SyncML fixes and workarounds.
There was a fix for duplicate items in SyncML, support for keeping an
unlimited number of cell phones in sync with no duplicates, preliminary
support for Sync4j SIF formats (./sifcalendar and ./siftask) used by the
Sync4j PIM clients for Outlook, Pocket PC, and others, and a new smaller
J2ME version with better error handling and GUI tweaks. This version
should work on any J2ME device that has HTTP capabilities. A new J2ME
HTTP test program is available to test your phone's J2ME capabilities.
Setting base permission fixes were also made.

and adjusts itself accordingly so that it wastes as much of their time as
possible.

Changes: A new CLI monitor was added so that you can keep an eye on the
tarpits over any console, including telnet and ssh or even a teleprinter.
The GUI monitor interface was improved, adding host cross-checking and
abuse mail/address checking on whois. A minor change was made to tarpit

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: In certain cases, IIS violates the HTTP specification by not
specifying a content type or length or a transfer encoding. This latest
build will work correctly in those cases. Two bugs have been fixed in the
error tables where the display of the request/responses were for the wrong
error, and errors in URLs weren't being counted in page or test case

[105] - webbiff 1.1 (1.0)
  by Zhaohui Yang (http://freshmeat.net/users/jyang/)
  Wed, Mar 9th 2005 20:21

Communications :: Email

About: webbiff is a Perl script for checking for new mail in Yahoo! mail.
It connects to cs.yahoo.com:5050 and executes a configurable command
(e.g., mpg123, xsetroot) for every mail message received. This approach is
better than other HTML/login-based approaches because it will not cause
Yahoo! mail to reset the "New Mail" indicator at your my.yahoo.com page.
You need Yahoo! Messenger to figure out your login string. Afterward, you
don't need Yahoo! Messenger to run webbiff.

About: WebGUI is a content management framework built to allow average
business users to build and maintain complex Web sites. It is modular,
pluggable, and platform independent. It was designed to allow the people
who create the content to manage it online, rather than content management
taking up the time of busy IT staff. WebGUI comes with a full discussion
forum with the functionality of phpBB or FUD Forum, plus events
calendaring, a photo gallery, a Web log (blog), FAQ and Link List
management, and a very configurable user privilege and profiling system.

Changes: This release introduces content prototypes, which allow you to
preconfigure assets that you create so that you can default the assets'
settings to whatever makes sense for you. Therefore, if you typically use
the collaboration system as a forum, then you can set up all the templates
and privileges exactly as you like for a forum. From then on, you'll have a
"forum" under the add content menu which will add a collaboration system
that defaults to your forum settings.
