Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: adesklets is an interactive Imlib2 console for the X Window system.
It provides to scripted languages a clean and simple way to write great
looking, mildly interactive desktop integrated graphic applets (aka
"desklets"). It can also be used as a command line oriented graphics
editor, a bit similar to ImageMagick, but with different functionality.
Changes: Documentation updates that were principally aimed at desklets
authors were made. This included a new appendix on how to submit a desklet
(including scripted support), and a new subsection on system-wide fonts
detection. The FAQ was also expanded to cover this topic.

by teknopaul (http://freshmeat.net/users/teknopaul/)
Tue, Mar 8th 2005 21:28
Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Installation/Setup
About: AntInstaller is a flexible front end for deploying applications
using Ant build files as the engine. It provides a Swing GUI and a
command line alternative for situations (such as server deployment) when X
is not available. The installer is designed by creating an XML config file
that describes the various pages of the installer and the input required
from the user. The input is validated and can be dates, directories,
options selected from a list, or other structured input. Once the
properties are selected, AntInstaller runs and calls the selected targets.
Primarily, it is designed for installing Java apps in a user-friendly way,
but can be used for anything that requires structured input for Ant
scripts.

Tue, Mar 8th 2005 08:39
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: The Bubbling Load Monitor (or "Bubblemon" for short) is a system
load monitor for the GNOME panel. It looks like a vial containing water.
The water level indicates how much (electronic) memory is in use. The
color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used. The amount of
bubbles reflects the system CPU load. A message in a bottle indicates
there is unread mail. A reed-like graph shows network load.
Changes: The Italian translation has been updated. The applet is now
better at locating the mail spool file, and thus at displaying the bottle.
The bottle now stays on the bottom if read mail remains in the spool file.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Screen Capture
About: Web pages look different in other browsers. For Web designers, this
is a major problem because testing a new site in many browsers is quite
time-consuming. The idea is to distribute the work of making browser
screenshots among community members. Everybody can add URLs to the job
queue on a central server. Workers use a small program to automatically
make screenshots of Web pages in their favorite browser and upload the
results to the server.
Changes: The python source code was given the PyLint treatment. This means
docstrings and a much cleaner code feel. A copy of the GNU GPL and a
changelog were added. One major new feature: duplicate submissions will be
rejected from the job queue.

Changes: This release adds the option to configure the question selection
mode. In addition to the old random mode, questions can now be asked in
order (sorted by the last time they were asked), and in an auto-learning
mode based on the Leitner system that gives priority to questions you
haven't learned yet. A few UI improvements have been made, and it is now

thread has its own individual program-counter, run-time stack, signal mask
and errno variable. The scheduling is done in a cooperative way, i.e. the
threads are dispatched based on priority and pending events. The event
facility allows threads to wait until various types of events occur,
including pending I/O on filedescriptors, elapsed timers, pending I/O on
message ports, thread and process termination, and even customized
callback functions.
Changes: Internal determination of the maximum number in a size_t was
fixed in the string formatter engine. The build environment was upgraded
to GNU libtool 1.5.14. The "underquoted definitions" problem in pth.m4 was
fixed. The build system no longer insists on writing to the source
directory on "make install" in order to more closely follow GNU standards.
"*.bak" and "*~" files are now removed under "make distclean" instead of
"make clean".

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
About: Jaikoz is an audio tagger for ID3 and MP3. It has many advanced
automation features, making it quick and easy to correct the meta-data in
your audio tags. It works especially well with large music collections. It
uses a spreadsheet view to allow you to edit information more quickly than
other applications, and provides many autoformatting tasks that do most of
the work for you. For example, it compares your MP3s to each other to help
correct missing information or spelling mistakes.
Changes: This release concentrated on improving the user interface. For
example, View and Edit menus have been added, and columns which are
editable using a combo box are displayed as such before you start editing.
In particular, a lot of work was done for Jaikoz on Mac OS X, such as
introduction of the Quaqua look and feel. The need to provide an email

[040] - Mauve 1.0.1
by Aaron Darling (http://freshmeat.net/users/darling/)
Tue, Mar 8th 2005 21:41
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: Mauve constructs global multiple alignments of rearranged genomes.
It also provides an interactive display of multi-species sequence
conservation and any annotated features in those genomes. It can be
applied to either finished or incomplete genomes in multiple contigs. The
resulting display is useful for identifying functional chromosomal regions
under selective pressure and for performing ortholog assignment based on
conserved gene order. Mauve writes global alignments in eXtended
Multi-FastA (XMFA) format, a phylogenetic guide tree in Newick format, and
the location of genomic islands. It identifies the breakpoints of genomic
rearrangement and can provide a reduction of the genomes to a signed
permutation matrix suitable for inference of rearrangement history.
Changes: This release fixes the ability to align genomes on Mac OS X 10.3
(which was broken due to a missing library). It makes the Linux Mauve
shell script and mauveAligner binary executable. It fixes the ability to
load genome annotations after constructing an alignment when the source
GenBank files reside in a different directory than the alignment output.
It also removes the memory profile.

System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of
primitives (VLAN id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses,
networks, AS numbers, ports, ToS field, and IP protocol are supported)
that may be employed alone or arbitrarily combined with others to form
complex aggregation methods. It supports custom historical breakdown,
packet sampling, filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers.
Both libpcap (and promiscuous mode if required) and NetFlow v1/v5/v9 are
supported.
Changes: In this release, pmacctd is now able to read libpcap savefiles,
pre-tagging capabilities have been extended, packets can be tagged based
on the outcome of a BPF filter, and pre-tag filtering has been enhanced.
In the client, the wildcarding of specific fields and partial matches
have been added, furthermore, it may return multiple results split up or

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking
About: pmping is a script that pings multiple hosts in parallel and gives
audible results depending on host state. The sounds come from the internal
PC speaker, thus not needing a sound card. It beeps when a host OS is
losing many packets, or when it is down. If the host is down, the script
can send an email notification or run a command. All aspects are fully
customisable by the user.
Changes: The program now checks for unknown ping answers, in which case it
prints an error message and terminates.
