About: Barcode provides a Web interface for generating barcode images
according to well-known barcode formating standards. It supports the
following barcode format standards: Codabar, Code11, Code39, Code93,
Code128, EAN-8, EAN-13, ISBN, Interleaved 2 of 5, Standard 2 of 5, MSI
Plessey, UPC-A, UPC-E, UPC Extension 2, UPC Extension 5, and PostNet. The
output images generated according to most of the standards have been
tested with a barcode reader device to confirm that they are correctly
generated.

  by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
  Sat, Mar 12th 2005 03:05

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid is a 2D mission-based platform game.
Since their world was invaded by an alien race, the Blobs have faced a
lifetime of war. But now they have a chance to win the war once and for
all. In Episode I: Metal Blob Solid, you take on the role of a fearless
Blob agent, Bob. Bob's mission is to infiltrate the various enemy bases
around the Blobs' homeworld and rescue as many POWs as possible. But
standing in his way are many vicious enemies, other Blobs who have been
assimilated, and the evil alien leader, Galdov.

Changes: Minor level tweaks and minor code fixes to aid with porting were
made. The PAK file is now built during the install process. All data files
are now available in the source download.

[006] - deb-install 0.6
  by icekiss (http://freshmeat.net/users/icekiss/)
  Sat, Mar 12th 2005 22:58

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: deb-install is a command line tool that can install or show
information about packages and files in several different formats.
Whenever a program is installed using deb-install, it is converted into a
deb package beforehand, and thus can be removed with a simple "apt-get
remove <name>". It currently supports apt-get, .deb, .rpm, .dsc, and
tar/.zip (source archives). Compression via gzip or bzip2 is handled
automatically. If a needed tool is missing, deb-install asks whether it
should install it.

Changes: This release now recovers from errors, making the prospect of a
compile aborting after two hours because of a missing file much less
frightening. A place to abort can be specified as a command line option,
making human intervention possible in many places. Support has been added
for Slackware, tab-completion has improved, and lots of internal code
improvements will hopefully make bugs rarer.

About: demexp is a client/server system for direct democracies. It makes
it possible to ask questions in the system, add new answers to those
questions, and vote on proposed answers. The voting procedure used is
Condorcet voting. Questions are classified, and a delegation system allows
one's vote for certain questions to be assigned to a chosen delegate. The
software is tailored to the needs of the Democratic Experience project.

Changes: The server and graphical client are working, but are not secured.
Saving in an XML file format, Condorcet voting, and classification were
implemented.

Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: This release adds client/server support capable of servicing
either a thin-client (dspamc) or LMTP connections directly from a mail
server, LMTP delivery, Bayesian Noise Reduction 2.0, many performance and
accuracy enhancements, support for the Streamlined Blackhole List, and an
automated corpus maker.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: Ecasound is a software package designed for multitrack audio
processing. It can be used for simple tasks like audio playback,
recording, and format conversions, as well as for multitrack effect
processing, mixing, recording and signal recycling. It supports a wide
range of audio inputs, outputs, and effect algorithms. Effects and audio
objects can be combined in various ways, and their parameters can be
controlled by operator objects like oscillators and MIDI-CCs. A versatile
console-mode user interface is included in the package.

Changes: An annoying bug with handling filenames with whitespace has been
fixed. Integration with libsamplerate and other resamplers has received a
lot of attention and many bugs have been fixed. Error reporting has been
improved when loading invalid chainsetups. A new sum-mixdown mode has been
added to the engine. Some minor cosmetic changes have been made to the
output produced by the console ecasound interface. A log message history
mechanism has been added to the engine to help ECI app and script
development.

About: The flat assembler is a fast and efficient self-assembling 80x86
assembler for DOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems. It supports all
8086-80486/Pentium instructions with MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, and 3DNow!
extensions and x86-64 (both AMD64 and EM64T) instructions. It can produce
output in binary, MZ, PE, COFF, or ELF format. It includes the powerful
but easy-to-use macroinstruction support, and does multiple passes to
optimize the instruction codes for size. The flat assembler is entirely
written in assembly language.

Changes: This is the first stable release that supports the x86-64
architecture, but these new features generally don't affect any of the
previously existing features. As for the 64-bit output formats, only ELF64
(both executable and object) is available now. The $$ symbol has been added
for a bit of compatibility with NASM, and many performance optimizations
have been applied.

About: IP Blocker is an incident response tool for network admins that
automatically updates access control lists (ACL) on Cisco routers and
other devices. Web and CLI are both supported. Logging, email
notification, and automatic expiration of blocks using policy-based TTL
values are all supported.

Changes: This release provides numerous small bugfixes and minor feature
enhancements primarily to the IOS and Remote modules. You can now deploy
blocking actions across multiple interfaces on the same Cisco IOS device
as one action. A number of examples are now included in the distribution
tarball, including scripts that connect to Cisco devices via SSH and order
a backup of the config via TFTP and other actions.

Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models

About: SHORE (Semantic Hypertext Object Repository) is a hypertext
repository that stores data about documents and data described by
documents. Access to this information is provided as hypertext. The
repository stores objects that appear in documents, together with their
relations in a semantic net. Hypertext navigation follows these relations
in the semantic net. The SHORE server works as an HTTP server, and the
client is a standard Web browser. The repository uses PROLOG as its query
language and the XSB system as its query engine.

Changes: This release adds full team support with simultaneous read and
write access to transaction guarded documents (ACID properties). The
extended memory mapped file persistence layer implements MVCC transactions
with redo log, optimistic write access control, and database page merging.
MVCC (Multiple Version Concurrency Control) transactions allow users to
access consistent document structures while new or updated documents are
imported. The release also enhances support for modern Linux 2.6.x kernels
and fix some minor problems.

System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block- sorting
file compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on
SMP machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2
1.0.2 (ie: anything compressed with PBZIP2 can be decompressed with
bzip2).

Changes: This release adds a major bugfix to handle problems in the
pthreads library. It is recommended that all users of 0.8.3 and higher
upgrade to this version. It also increases the size of the BZIP2 header
match from 56 bits to 72 bits for more accurate detection, modifies some
buffers to use the vector class for easier memory management and speedier
decompression, checks to ensure that the input is a regular file and not a
directory before processing, and deletes the input file only if the output
file exists.

About: The Streamlined Blackhole List Server is a real-time,
machine-automated blackhole server designed to blacklist network addresses
which exceed a threshold of network spread, that is, abuse from an address
which has been reported by a number of participating networks (as opposed
to how most other blacklists function, based on total number of reports).
It blacklists addresses until they have cleared a minimum duration (an
hour by default) without any additional reports. It is designed to
function via automated machine-learning spam filters, such as Bayesian
filters. Each participating network is granted write authentication, to
prevent abuse. A client tool is also provided.

Changes: Support for zone file writing has been added. Two separate
configuration files (one for the client, one for the server) are now used

  Sat, Mar 12th 2005 02:57

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.

Changes: sadf is now able to display the contents of a sar datafile in
XML. Typos were fixed in the formulas used by sadf to display stats on
machines where HZ is not 100. A bug in the stats displayed by sar -d was
fixed, and a problem in the sar -i option which might not have selected
records at the specified interval on machines with multiple processors was
fixed. A bug in the spec file that caused the sa1 and sa2 scripts to point
