many small bugs inside the desklets submission process scripts, makes
portability changes to the autoconf structure, adds a new demo scripts in
test (widget.py), corrects the xwindow_move_window routine for a small
placement bugs on the screen, and finally add a new appendix containing a
handy online version of Imlib2 documentation.

  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 07:43

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The mission of the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) project is to
create and maintain software libraries that provide a predictable and
consistent interface to underlying platform- specific implementations. The
primary goal is to provide an API to which software developers may code
and be assured of predictable if not identical behaviour regardless of
the platform on which their software is built, relieving them of the need
to code special-case conditions to work around or take advantage of
platform-specific  deficiencies or features.

About: Advanced Web Statistics (AWStats) is a free powerful Web server
logfile analyzer (Perl script) that shows you all your Web statistics
including visits, unique visitors, pages, hits, rush hours, search
engines, keywords used to find your site, robots, broken links, and more.
It works with both IIS 5.0+ and Apache Web server log files as a CGI
and/or from the command line. It also supports multiple languages
including English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, and
Greek.

Changes: A security hole that allowed a user to read log file content even
when plugin rawlog was not enabled has been fixed. A possible use of
AWStats for a DoS attack has been fixed. The configdir option was broken
on Windows servers (Pb on the Sanitize function on Windows local use).
Other minor fixes. The option ShowSummary has been added. If the Geoip
plugin is enabled, a column is added to the Host report. There is now a
way to set ArchiveLogRecords with same tags as LogFile to add a suffix to
archived log files.

Security

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the
installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question.
The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when
securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less
likely to compromise the increased security.

[016] - Dazuko 2.0.6
  by John Ogness (http://freshmeat.net/users/jogness/)
  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 13:16

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: Dazuko provides a device driver allowing 3rd-party (userland)
applications to execute file access control. It was originally developed
by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH to allow on-access virus scanning. Other uses
include a file-access monitor/logger or external security implementations.
It operates by intercepting file access calls and passing the file
information to a 3rd-party application. The 3rd-party application then has
the opportunity to tell the device driver to allow or deny the file access.
The 3rd-party application also receives information about the access event,
such as accessed file, type of access, process id, and user id.

Changes: A minor problem with the Linux 2.6 LSM stacking code has been
fixed. Support for the Linux 2.6.11 and 2.6.12-rc1 kernels has been added.

[022] - fwknop 0.5.0
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 07:18

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop is a flexible port knocking implementation that is based
around iptables. Both shared knock sequences and encrypted knock sequences
are supported. In addition, fwknop makes use of passive OS fingerprinting
signatures derived from p0f to ensure the OS that initiates a knock
sequence conforms to a specific type. This makes it possible to allow,
say, only Linux systems to connect to your SSH daemon. Both the knock
sequences and OS fingerprinting are completely implemented around iptables
log messages, and so a separate packet capture library is not required.

Changes: IPTables::ChainMgr was added. Fwknop uses this module to maintain
dedicated chains to which access rules are added. IPTables::Parse was
added, which is used internally by IPTables::ChainMgr. ALERTING_METHOD was
added to allow syslog and/or email reporting to be disabled.
install_perl_module() was added in install.pl from psad to provide a
consistent installation interface. Only Perl modules that are not already
installed are now installed. The --last-cmd option was added to allow
fwknop to be executed with command line arguments from the previous
execution.

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 13:17

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

Changes: Updated to not attempt to download Snort rules from snort.org
because the rules are no longer available for automatic downloads. The
install.pl script and the --update-rules mode for fwsnort have been
changed to download the latest signature set from
http://www.bleedingsnort.com/. (Snort.org is now offering pay service
around their rule sets). A signature test for the "flowbits" keyword has
been added.

  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 11:34

Artistic Software
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Gnofract 4D is a Gnome-based program to draw fractals. What sets it
apart from other fractal programs (and makes it "4D") is the way that it
treats the Mandelbrot and Julia sets as different views of the same
four-dimensional fractal object. It contains a Fractint-compatible formula
compiler, allowing it to draw an unlimited number of fractal types, using
numerous coloring options.

Changes: This release provides significantly better UltraFractal
compatibility, including preprocessor directives and integer, enumerated,
and boolean parameters. This is sufficient to use most UF coloring
algorithms; a copy of the standard ones is included by kind permission.
There are also new features for changing the color scheme: a gradient
editor and a unique "painting" feature. Support for GIMP gradient files
has been added.

with the rest of the system (by using the Unix rules for printf verbs and
Unix system headers, for example), this port tries to reproduce the Plan 9
build environment as faithfully as possible, providing u.h and libc.h, and
blithely redefining tokens such as open, dup, and accept in order to
provide implementations that better mimic the Plan 9 semantics. The result
is a more complicated and less Unix-friendly environment, but Plan 9
programs can typically be compiled with little or no changes.

Changes: The layout of the Alt struct in thread.h was changed to match the
Plan 9 one. This means that all libraries and object files compiled with
the old thread.h are now poisonous.

[061] - ReleaseForge 0.5
  by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 02:39

About: ReleaseForge is a GUI application designed for project
administrators and release engineers of projects that are hosted at
SourceForge. It is intended to make it easier and faster to create a new
release rather than using the SourceForge Web interface. It streamlines
the release effort by prompting you for information regarding your new
release (version info, change log, release notes, files to include, etc).
It then seamlessly negotiates with the SourceForge Web server, creating
your release, posting your release notes/change log, uploading your files
to the SourceForge FTP server, selecting the files for your release on
the SourceForge Web server, selecting these files for inclusion in your
release, updating the file attributes of each of the files and then, if
appropriate, notifying monitoring users of the new release.

[062] - rpm2html/rpmfind 1.8.3
  by Hany (http://freshmeat.net/users/hany/)
  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 02:42

System :: Software Distribution
System :: Systems Administration

About: rpm2html automatically generates Web pages describing a set of RPM
packages. The goal of rpm2html is also to identify the dependancies
between various packages, and being able to find the packages providing
the ressources needed to install another package. Rpmfind tries to solve
the big problem of finding appropriate RPM packages on the net. It
analyzes the current state of the system, checks a remote database using
HTTP to lookup the packages providing the best affinity with your current
software base and also lists the extra packages that you need to install
to solve the missing dependencies.

Changes: In this version GIF images were replaced with PNG images and
fixes were made for bugs in configure.in affecting usage of 'configure
--with-gpg'.

  Sun, Mar 20th 2005 11:31

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration

About: Tentakel is a program that executes the same command on many hosts
in parallel using SSH or other remote methods. It is designed to be easily
extendable. The output of the remote command can be controlled by means of
format strings.

Changes: This release comes with two new features: a plugin mechanism
allowing users to easily create their own remote methods, and the new
"maxparallel" parameter, which allows one to restrict the number of
concurrently running threads to avoid too much load on download servers,
etc.. The maxparallel feature can make tentakel a lot faster under certain
circumstances. The rsh plugin is now much more useful, as it is now able to
return the exit status of the remote command.
