Adaptive Technologies
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Absolut Engine is a news publishing system. It features three-layer
access (admin/chief/editor), article posting, editing, and deleting. It
includes a powerful image managing tool, a file manager, and a related
articles manager. Rich text editing is provided via a built-in WYSIWYG
editor that produces XHTML 1.0 Strict-compliant code. Absolut Engine is
easy to extend via module functionality. The provided modules include
Discussions, Surveys, RSS Feed, Search Engine Optimization (static/clean
URLs), and a message system for better communication between users.
Absolut Engine produces Web-standards-compliant valid and accessible XHTML
1.0 Strict and CSS semantically-correct code.

Changes: Imageset can now contain an unlimited number of images. Fileset
can now contain an unlimited number of files. Fully search engine
optimization compliant URLs (clean URLs/static URLs are available).
WYSIWYG editor enhancements. Heavy improvements in module/plugin
functionality. New layout and code (XHTML 1.0 Strict code and valid CSS).
Full documentation has been added.

[002] - AFD 1.2.22
  by Holger Kiehl (http://freshmeat.net/users/hkiehl/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 08:04

Communications
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Systems Administration

About: AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally
or to remote hosts. The files are distributed by using FTP or SMTP, and
can be sent in parallel and with priority. It provides a GUI to monitor
and control the distribution and extensive logging of all activities.

Changes: In the previous version a directory name buffer was released too
early, causing amg to always crash when there were any unfinished jobs
after an unclean shutdown. When initializing variables for bursting,
age_limit was sometimes reset incorrectly, causing files to be deleted due
to age, even though those files actually had no age limit. The speed of the
show_queue dialog was considerably improved.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80. This provides you with shell access to
your machine from almost any Web browser, even when firewalls are in the
way.

Changes: Shared memory is now used within the Apache module, meaning that
the terminal persists beyond the few seconds possible previously. This
version is almost usable.

[004] - ATA over Ethernet driver 2.6-8 (For Linux 2.6)
  by Ed Cashin at Coraid (http://freshmeat.net/users/ecashinCoraid/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 10:33

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: The configuration of allowable network interfaces has been fixed
and improved. A module load option and a corresponding boot option now
allow the interfaces list to be set when driver is initialized. Userland
software has been split out into the separate aoetools package.
Documentation has been updated and improved.

Education
Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the
installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question.
The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when
securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less
likely to compromise the increased security.

Changes: A temporary bug which prevented Bastille from asking most
questions on Fedora Core was fixed. A bug that prevented Bastille from
setting a GRUB password on some distributions was fixed. Questions to
delete extraneous users and groups were added.

[008] - Classic Forum 3.1.1
  by Christian Kruse (http://freshmeat.net/users/ckruse/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 10:39

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: The Classic Forum is a classical threaded forum that consists of a
daemon that holds all data in RAM and client programs that query the
daemon or use shared memory to retrieve the data. It's designed to be very
fast and flexible and has a very well designed plugin interface. The user
interface features 72 configuration options and includes very nifty
filtering options.

Changes: This release fixes several bugs. It also introduces a plugin
called "Gummizelle". "Gummizelle" is the German word for "padded cell",
and is a plugin against spam. You "imprison" someone in this padded cell,
and all posts he writes will be marked as deleted, but will be visible for
the imprisoned user to answer, read, etc. The imprisoned user will think
everything is normal, but no other users will see his posts. This should
avoid situations in which users whose posts have been deleted make
repeated re-posts.

  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 04:15

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Apache Cocoon is an XML publishing framework. Cocoon offers a
flexible environment based on the separation of concerns between content,
logic, and style. A centralized configuration system and sophisticated
caching help you to create, deploy, and maintain rock-solid XML server
applications. Cocoon interacts with most data sources, including
filesystems, RDBMS, LDAP, and native XML databases. It adapts content
delivery to many different formats, such as HTML, WML, PDF, SVG, and
RTF. Cocoon currently runs as a Servlet or from a powerful command-line
interface.

Changes: This release adds some new features, fixes some bugs, and
improves performance and usability. This version also builds and runs
under JDK 5.0.

  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 08:00

Multimedia
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Common C++ RTP is an experimental threadsafe RTP stack for use with
Common C++. It uses a service thread to both schedule outgoing packets and
organize arriving packets. Queued lists of packets are maintained both for
sending and receiving, and packet payloads can be mixed such as for passing
RTP telephony events.

Changes: Multiple destination lists were fixed. Padding for RTP packets
was fixed, and a new padding member function was added to enable or
disable padding. The set of required libraries is now smaller; it now only
depends on libccgnu2, and no longer depends on libccext2.

[011] - Conary 0.50.7
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 19:15

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: This release is all about changes for writing recipes; there are
no changes affecting software installation. It adds the XInetdService()
action, the ability to prohibit groups from containing redirects,
setLabelPath() for group recipes, the ability to specify library flags
when manually providing a soname, and changes to the buildRequires list
so that it now takes items like 'foo=:tag' in preference to items like
'foo=tag'.

About: DBBrowser is a program that can be used to run queries and view
the structure of databases. It was designed to work with as many RDBMS
systems as possible using JDBC. It uses a plugin API and can connect to
any system for which a JDBC driver exists.

Changes: A minimally tested data import feature that allows the import of
data from a CSV file was added. The table can either already exist or be
created during the import process.

  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 10:34

Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management

About: enetman is a network asset management Web application written in
PHP with a MySQL backend. Its intended use is to maintain a structured
list of servers that can be cross referenced by location, manufacturer,
vendor, CPU, and OS. It allows for a user to create and maintain
locations, manufacturers, and vendors along with contact names and phone
numbers to each. It contains a device log that tracks issues that servers
have had, a list of network ports on the server along with IP information
(IP, subnet, gateway, DNS, network card make/model and MAC) for each port
(this includes aliased ports), and a software manager that keeps tabs on
expiration dates of software. It enables the user to create a directory
tree with files that can then be attached to locations, vendors,
manufacturers, software, or servers. It maintains a list of all software
installed on a server and how many licenses are allocated to it. A Perl
script run from cron emails users when a license is about to expire.

Changes: The following are now fully modular: security, network
interfaces, ports, software, device log, links, documents, and -mics.
Security checks, a security report, and an Open Ports module have been
added. Licence allocation is smarter.

About: Fakiir helps a programmer to expose an API with its methods and
properties, generating code for object introspection which can be used by
an object-oriented application to offer external access to its own public
functions. It analyzes an OO header using a Lex/C grammar parser and
generates C++ code from it.

Changes: OSC remote access has been implemented using liblo. XML-RPC
remote access has been implemented using xmlrpc++. Fakiir is now also a
library to be linked by programs using it. It can now read headers and
write code for concurrent object exposure in OSC and XML-RPC at the same
time (including TCP and UDP server code). Important code cleanups and a

  by Draco Roboter (http://freshmeat.net/users/DracoRoboter/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 19:04

About: JNanoScript is a framework for the construction of scripting
languages that can be used to automate tests. For example, it is possible
to write commands for accessing Web services for ensuring that a specific
sequence of commands has a coherent behavior. The built-in functionality
is minimal, including only initialization, assignment, and the callback of
a specific command. There are no loops, which assures the termination of a
script on the condition that every atomic command is completed.

Changes: This release adds some commands, Wait and CurrentTime. The Print
command can now print lists of strings. the logging system was changed to
use an AOP-like design with dynamic proxies. The @include script-filename
metacommand was changed so that infinite loops now are not allowed.

[056] - rsyslog 0.8.2
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 08:12

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for MySQL and fully configurable output formats (including large
timestamps). It has been forked from the standard sysklogd package. The
project's goal is to provide a more configurable and reliable syslog
deamon. "Reliable" in the previous sentence refers to support for reliable
transmission modes like TCP or RFC 3195 (syslog-reliable).

Changes: The man pages have finally been added. rsyslogd no longer
replaces the stock syslogd on installation. Instead, it installs
side-by-side with syslogd. This has the big advantage of removing
uncertainty for the user, but it also means that the user needs to modify
the system startup scripts.

[058] - Seismic Toolkit 0.24
  by Reymond (http://freshmeat.net/users/Reymond/)
  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 04:11

Scientific/Engineering

About: Seismic Toolkit is a tool for processing and displaying seismic
signal data in a graphical interface. It reads seismic signals in SAC
format, and provides a number of user operations, such as zooming,
filtering, spectral analysis, polarisation analysis, time-frequency
representation, Hilbert transform, and singular value decomposition.

Changes: Postscript files can now be generated using the plot_3comp.c,
plot_current_chan.c, and plot_all_chan.c programs. These programs generate
a command_file for GMT (the Generic Mapping Tool software) that is able to
create PostScript output for high quality graphics or printing.
Export_to_ASCII menus were added for NZE_channels, Current_channel, and
ALL_channels, so that the signals can be plotted with other software.

  Thu, Mar 24th 2005 19:20

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: t-prot (TOFU Protection) is a filter which improves the readability
of email messages and Usenet posts by hiding some of their annoying parts.
The annoyances it handles include mailing list footers, signatures, TOFU,
sequences of blank lines, and repeated punctuation. TOFU is an acronym
that stands for "Text oben, Fullquote unten", a German reference to the
practice of adding just a few lines of original text and quoting a
complete message below them.

Changes: A missing range check was added, and the Kammquote condition was
made a little stricter.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Tiny RML2PDF is a tool to create PDF documents. It can be used as a
Python library or as a standalone program. It converts an RML document into
a PDF document. RML is an XML dialect that lets you define the precise
appearance of a printed document. You can use your existing tools to
generate an input file that exactly describes the layout of a printed
document, and Tiny RML2PDF converts it into PDF. RML is a more powerful,
simple, and flexible alternative to XSL:FO.

Changes: This release has bugfixes, pageNumber attributes, named
attributes, TTF support, and better image tag support. It runs perfectly
on Win32.

Text Editors

About: Traditional vi is derived from the 4BSD source and includes support
for modern operating systems, 8-bit input, multi-byte character encodings
like UTF-8, and features demanded by POSIX.2. It contains few additions
beyond this, so it is of interest for those who look for a small but
well-defined vi implementation close to that of most commercial Unix
systems. It also has some features to cope with primitive terminals or
slow connections.

Changes: vi no longer dies with a segmentation fault if a line does not
fit on the screen after an insertion. The 'p' vi command now works
correctly if the buffer contains a partial line with multibyte
characters. Traditional regular expressions that sometimes failed to
operate correctly have now been fixed.
