SFTP For Business Use
by John K. Norden (mailto:[email protected])
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Mar 26th 2005 00:00

Many months ago, the organization I work for placed a request with our
development department for a secure file transfer system. The file
transfer system needed to be far more secure than FTP and more reliable
than creating an HTTP uploading system. After a few weeks of research and
testing, I suggested that we create an SFTP Server to handle the file
uploads.

[001] - AKFQuiz 3.1.0
  by Andreas K. Foerster (http://freshmeat.net/users/AKFoerster/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 12:23

Education

About: The AKFQuiz package lets you easily make your own quiz games or
learning exercises. These can be used either with crtquiz on the text
console or with diaquiz in a GUI environment. A CGI-variant can be
installed on a Web server to offer exercises via the Web. Or you can use
mkquiz, which generates an HTML file for to use with the JavaScript
akfquiz2.js. Those can then be published with any Web-space provider.

Changes: The new grquiz program was added. This is a quiz-program in
graphics mode (using SVGALib, which does not work in FreeBSD). The new
linequiz program was added. This is usable as a backend for
speech-synthesizers or braille-lines. mkquiz now handles assessment-blocks
better. An assessmentURI can be used for mkquiz and akfquiz.cgi, which can
be used for your own Web pages or scripts. Several bugfixes and minor
enhancements in all parts were made.

[002] - Anatomic P2P 0.1 Beta (Supertracker Backend)
  by kunkie (http://freshmeat.net/users/kunkie/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 11:58

Communications :: File Sharing

About: Anatomic P2P is an implementation of a protocol designed to
decentralize BitTorrent. It is based on a network of "supertrackers" or
"supernodes" that users query and which route users to the correct
tracker(s). A modified tracker and client are used, and "old" clients can
still use the network. The technology is based on the Gnutella GWebCache
system.

Changes: A frontend was added for visitors using a Web browser.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80, or securely using SSL. This provides you
with shell access to your machine from almost any Web browser, even when
firewalls are in the way.

Changes: Screen updates are now sent in the form of differences from one
frame to the next, greatly reducing the required network bandwidth.

[004] - autopackage 1.0
  by Mike Hearn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhearn/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 11:58

System :: Software Distribution
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: autopackage is a package manager for Linux that is intended to sort
out RPM hell by making it much easier to create distribution-neutral
packages that can be downloaded and run, a la InstallShield. It has
several advantages over both the RPM approach and the Windows
installer-stub system. Although the packages are "smart" and can adapt to
the computer on which they are installing, there is minimal overhead
involved on the package itself. Using autopackage, you can create .package
files and link them to the autopackage network for easy installation using
a distributed apt-style system. These packages also have many other
powerful features not found in other systems.

Changes: The GTK and Qt manager applications have been integrated. API
stability is now guaranteed. New artwork has been included. Better
documentation was written. This is the first stable, tested, and
recommended release of autopackage. It's being used by high profile
projects like Gaim, Inkscape, and AbiWord.

[005] - Compact Flash Linux Project 0.1.5
  by krichy (http://freshmeat.net/users/krichy/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 13:12

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Compact Flash Linux Project is a Linux distribution designed to run
on a compact flash card in read-only mode. It is as small as possible, and
currently needs around 14 MB. It includes OpenSSH, quagga, iptables,
hostap, madwifi, wireless-tools, pppoe, tcpdump, bridge-utils, and more.

Changes: New packages include nemesis, grsecurity, and openswan.
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/{tcp,udp}_blackhole was added, which behaves like
FreeBSD's blackhole sysctls. This version has been tested for a long time,
and it compiles with gcc version 2 and version 3. This version is
considered stable.

  by Gavin Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/Jodrell/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 11:52

Software Development
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS

About: Convulsion is a drop-in CVS repository browser for PHP. It makes
use of the libraries developed for the Chora module of the Horde
project, but does not require that Horde be installed and working. You
can browse directories and files, view a file's revision history,
compare two versions, and retrieve its change log. It also supports
automatic obfuscation of e-mail addresses and syntax highlighting for
most common languages.

Changes: The "Powered By..." banner can now be turned off. Convulsion's
output is now more valid. "#cvs.lock" files are no longer shown. When a
file is newly imported, Convulsion no longer shows an invalid revision
date.

[011] - EDIReader 3.2
  by nicanor (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicanor/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 07:22

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: EDIReader is a Java package for parsing business documents
structured according to Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards. It
supports the SAX and JAXP interfaces defined for XML, making it suitable
for use in any XML-based system that allows the configuration of a
custom SAX parser. Therefore EDI interchanges can be easily transformed
with XSLT or accessed with JDOM.

Changes: This release adds a Web interface for viewing EDI files, the XML
generated from those EDI files, and the translation of the EDI data using
XSLT stylesheets. The Open Source version uses the same codebase which was
internally streamlined in this release. A new EDI formatting tool produces
a line-oriented listing of your raw EDI files using indention to reflect
interchange, group, and document structures. With optional document
plugins, the formatted listing also reflects the nested segment grouping
within the documents.

[012] - fallback-reboot 0.999
  by Dan Stromberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/strombrg/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 22:32

About: fallback-reboot is a last resort, when you need to remotely reboot
a computer. It attempts to maximize its ability to get the job done by
completely avoiding touching the hard disk; it opens no files, and it
locks itself into memory to avoid swapping/paging. It also does not fork
or exec. It includes optional cryptography.

Changes: This release was ported to FreeBSD 5.4 Beta 1. The fallback-
reboot-client can not only accept input from a TTY as before, but now
also from a pipe or file.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: The release fixes several small bugs in the conversion of XML to
PDF for printouts, particularly regarding the scaling and alignment of
images and mathematical formulas. It also updates the cluster tables with
new installations at several institutions and companies.

[029] - Redet 5.2
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 12:23

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.

Changes: User-defined named character classes can now be intersected,
which allows for searches on feature matrices. When the color settings are
changed, the new configuration is saved to a file which is read on startup.
There are also miscellaneous improvements and bugfixes.

[037] - UMLGraph 3.1
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Sat, Mar 26th 2005 11:55

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: This release is the first step of the Java 1.5 transition. The
container code in the source was changed to use the Java 1.5 generics.
More importantly, this version will display Java enumerations as a
stereotyped primitive type. Two new options, -enumerations and
-enumconstants, control the corresponding operation.
