The past year has seen the rise of a controversial but unavoidable medium,
The Blog. While blogs are not new, and many trace their spirit and much of
their content back to the much-lamented baby-photo-infested personal
homepages of the early Web, this has been the year in which they've gained
wide audiences rivaling those of traditional news sources. I'm not too
proud to say that this has left us at freshmeat feeling a little
inadequate.

About: Bacon is a 'blogging tool in the spirit of Blosxom that aims to be
a small-footprint, lightweight, and flexible system for maintaining
dynamic content on the Web. It is intended for people who wants to start a
'blog without a lot of bells and whistles. Entries and updates are simple
text files in HTML format, and HTML templates with embedded Python are
used to transform them into HTML, PDF, or just about any format on the
fly.
Changes: Many flavours (templates) are included, instead of a separate
download. An Atom template for Atom feeds. PDF support. You will need
pdflatex for this to work. This is a comments plugin and flavours to make
it work. Miscellaneous plugins and metaWebLog support have been added.

[009] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.3.6
by Big Faceless Organization (http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
Fri, Apr 1st 2005 04:32
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business
Printing
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.
Changes: This version adds support for interlaced PNG images. It adds an
AnnotationMarkup class, for highlight/underline etc. annotations. More
robust parsing of CCITT-2D encoded images (including TIFF) should handle
slightly corrupt images more gracefully. There was a very slight
modification to line spacing in multiline FormText elements, so fields
with many lines occupy the same space as in Acrobat.

[012] - Conary 0.50.8

Fri, Apr 1st 2005 07:08
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Conary now gives progress feedback for the update, erase, and
changeset commands. The update --info command now provides version
information and a summary, and sorts its output by trove names. Unresolved
build requirement error output is now easier to understand. Most of conary
has moved into the Python site-packages directory.

[015] - dpkg 1.10.27
by jeff covey (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeffcovey/)
Fri, Apr 1st 2005 01:26
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
About: The `dpkg' suite contains the programs which handle Debian (.deb)
packages. It was developed on Debian GNU/Linux but can be used on all
Linux distributions and most Unix systems. The `dpkg' command can be used
to install, remove and manage .deb binary packages, and it maintains a
package database which gets updated on changes. It is also a front-end to
the low-level `dpkg-deb' tool, which is oriented towards manipulating
archives. However, the primary interface to dpkg is the `dselect' program,
which is used to get and display packages for the user to select for
(de)installation.
Changes: This release adds Indonesian and Norwegian Bokmal translations
and updates the Dutch, Galician, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and
Traditional Chinese translations. Hey, everybody, thanks for checking in.
Well, the observant will see that the last dpkg announcement here was
dated 01-Nov-2003. It's about time I got back to using this page. What's
been happening with you in the past 1.42 years? I've been ok, got the cast
off, as you know. (I'm sorry to everybody who thought the photos were kind
of gross. :-/) The kittens were born. (Sorry again. :-\) There was that
thing with the cement that wasn't the brand I thought it was, and then the
bit with Phil Collins and cosinal wavelets; I think everybody's read about
that on the other page. Thanks for being so supportive. Debian's been like
such a big family to me, and when I ring the gongs each night, it's hard to
keep the emotions back. I love each and every one of you. Not, you know,
sexually, I mean. Now that freshmeat allows blogging, I'll start putting
the news in both places. I'll post announcements for the eight missed
releases with my commentary on them shortly. Trackbacks welcome. Thanks!

[035] - KCachegrind 0.9.11 (Callgrind)
by Josef Weidendorfer (http://freshmeat.net/users/weidendo/)
Fri, Apr 1st 2005 21:22
Software Development
Software Development :: Testing
About: KCachegrind visualizes profiles of program runs in various ways,
including a tree map and call graph visualization, and source and
assembler annotation. It is designed to be fast and to provide a quick
overview of very large programs, such as KDE applications. A source for
profile data is Callgrind, a Valgrind plugin, which produces call graph
and cache simulation events. While this can run unmodified binaries, the
simulation slows down measuring. For other profile tools like OProfile,
format converters are provided.
Changes: Support for Valgrind 2.4.0 was added. Wildcards are now fully
supported in function name patterns on the command line. Cache-Reuse
metrics are now supported by using "--cacheuse=yes" and metric "SLoss" to
locate badly aligned/layed out data structures. This shows the wasted
amount of memory channel bandwidth, as it is the amount of data which was
loaded into cache but never actually used.

About: white_dune is a graphical VRML97 editor, simple NURBS/Superformula
3D modeller and animation tool. VRML97 (Virtual Reality Modeling Language)
is the ISO standard for displaying 3D data over the Web via browser plugins
("HTML for realtime 3D"). It has support for animation, real-time
interaction, and multimedia (images, movies, and sounds). white_dune can
read, create and display VRML97 files and let the user change the
scenegraph/fields. It also has support for stereoscopic view via
"quadbuffer"-capable stereo visuals, and support for 3D input devices like
a joystick, spaceball, or magnetic tracker.

[073] - X-Plane 8.10 (Stable)

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
About: X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of
any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this
via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves
breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the
forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then
converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and
positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available
for personal computers.

Machine Emulator, an arcade (coin-op) video game emulator. The latest
stable release is capable of playing over 2000 arcade games.
Changes: In this release, forcing Xv to use YV12 ("-force-yuv 2") no
longer causes rotated games to segfault. A bug in the OpenGL display
target that could cause the bitmap to be skewed for some games, such as
sfrush, was fixed, the hotkey effect switching now works again for MESS
consoles, the aspect ratio of the MESS SuperVision driver was fixed so
that it's quadratic, and a setting was added to the Makefile to disable
effects.
