Mon, Apr 11th 2005 03:51
Education
About: The AKFQuiz package lets you easily make your own quiz games or
learning exercises. These can be used either with grquiz in a graphical
environment (SVGAlib), with crtquiz on the text console, or with diaquiz
in a GUI environment. There is also a line oriented variant, linequiz,
which can be used as a backend. A CGI-variant can be installed on a Web
server to offer exercises via the Web. A mkquiz tool that generates an
HTML file for to use with the JavaScript akfquiz3.js is also included.
Those can then be published with any Web-space provider.
Changes: Support for UTF-8 (Unicode) in input-files and for UTF-8 displays
was added. The programs can now cope with very long lines (ie. when the
editor doesn't add linebreaks in a paragraph).

About: Album Shaper is a graphical application used to create, maintain,
and share photo albums using open formats like HTML and JPG. Two-layer
albums can be created in a drag-n-drop interface which allows quick and
easy arrangement and categorization of photos. A few simple image
manipulations such as rotation and flipping are provided to help get
photos presentable as quickly as possible. Photos, subalbums, and albums
themselves can be labeled as needed and modified at a later time by saving
and loading from a simple XML format.
Changes: While mainly a bugfix release, this version also adds complete
French and German translations, a new Radiant theme, and a new Mosaic
image manipulation. The compilation and installation process for
Linux/FreeBSD users has seen significant improvements.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes: A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new
EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a
previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe device
is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.

Mon, Apr 11th 2005 16:29
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Slate is a prototype-based object-oriented programming language
based on Self, CLOS, and Smalltalk. Slate syntax is intended to be as
familiar as possible to a Smalltalker, rather than engaging in divergent
experiments in that respect. However, the language semantics, environment,
and run-time design are all much more powerful than in traditional
Smalltalk systems.
Changes: Better REPL features and SmartREPL support, SDL support, improved
macro semantics, more data types, more safety checks, support for
persistent connections to external facilities (files, sockets, and
external libraries) via startup/shutdown hooks, and more intuitive cascade
semantics.

to any Java application through JDBC. It works with any Java application
without code modification and with any database engine. C-JDBC has been
successfully tested with Tomcat, JBoss, JOnAS, WebSphere, MySQL,
PostgreSQL, HSQL, SAP DB, Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL, Firebird, and more.
Changes: This maintenance release includes bugfixes for better
dump/checkpoint management for backup/restore and enable/disable
operations. Shutdown implementations have been refactored and renamed to
better reflect their behavior. JMX management interfaces of controller and
virtual databases have been cleaned up. The user guide and the tutorial

Mon, Apr 11th 2005 01:18
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: CodeWorker is a versatile parsing tool and a universal source code
generator. It interprets a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. The file formats to parse are described in an extended-BNF
syntax. Template-based scripts drive the writing of patterns for
generating code or text. The code generation knows how to preserve
protected areas with hand-typed code and provides code expansion,
source-to-source translation, and program transformation. It provides a
native translation of CodeWorker's scripts in C++.
Changes: Some bugs were fixed in the native C++ translation of scripts.
Some other minor bugs were corrected. Several new functions were added,
notably for code generation, including semi-automatic indenting of output
during generation. The plugins (external packages as dynamic libraries)
must be recompiled as their header file has changed.

Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
About: CRM-CTT allows you to create entities to which you can attach
files, place alerts, prioritize, etc. It is multi-lingual and
customizable. It can be used for any department in which something comes
in, must be handled, and goes out, such as bug tracking, systems

Security
System :: Logging
About: devialog is a behavior/anomaly/signature-based syslog intrusion
detection system which can detect new, unknown attacks. It fits
comfortably in a heterogeneous Unix/Linux/*BSD environment at the core of
a central syslog server. devialog generates its own signatures and acts
upon anomalies as configured by the system administrator. In addition,
devialog can function as a traditional syslog parsing utility in which
known signatures trigger actions.
Changes: Mail queueing was enabled, so in the event that many anomalies
appear, only one email is sent with multiple anomalies per default. A
suggested signature logfile was added, in which devialog continuously (and
optionally) writes suggested signatures during runtime to a pre-defined
location. When combined with devialogsig, it's an easier way to add
signatures. devialog requires the new version of the configuration file.
Do not use the old configuration format, since there are far too many new
options added.

About: Dwarf is a modular Java framework for developing network server
applications based on Internet standards. While focused on building
service-based applications like Web servers, mail servers, and messaging
services, it can also be used for other applications. The core consists of
several packages, which provide a multithreaded kernel, security based on
the standard Java 2 Platform Security architecture and the JAAS, logging,
configuration, and a management system. Modularity and a fine-grained API
allow one to extend the server, to reuse the existing services for a new
application, or even create new services based on the existing ones.
Changes: Preliminary support for non-blocking TCP/IP services based on the
request/response protocol model was added. Console commands may now start

[037] - i18nHTML 0.2.0
by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
Mon, Apr 11th 2005 00:53
Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: i18nHTML is a collection of scripts that can be used to write Web
pages that visitors can translate into their respective native languages.
It uses a database to match sentences from the Web page against
translations and defines a set of PHP functions that generate either the
translated HTML sentences or the original (typically English) text with
decorations that allow users to provide translations. It requires that
internationalized pages be written using the functions but does not
constrain the page design in any way. Internationalized pages can be
updated without losing existing translations for sentences that were not
changed.
Changes: The code was cleaned up. A few additional convenience functions
(TH, TD) were added. Problems with voting for translations and with
escaping quotes were fixed. The format of the database changed slightly.
Additional initial translations for boostrapping the Web page were
included. Existing i18nHTML Web pages should work with the new release
without changes to the code.

[056] - Prefix WhoIs 1.0.2
by oppleman (http://freshmeat.net/users/oppleman/)
Mon, Apr 11th 2005 23:08
About: The Prefix WhoIs Project provides a whois-compatible client and
server framework for disclosing various up-to-date routing information via
a familiar whois interface. Instead of using registrar-originated
information (which is often unspecific or inaccurate), it uses the
Internet's global routing table as gleaned from a number of routing peers
around the network. The software consists of a 'pWhoIsd' server that
responds to queries using a variety of output formats including
pWhoIs-native, Cymru, and RPSL, the 'pWhoIs-updatedb' agent that parses
routing information bases (RIBs) from Internet routers and populates a
relational database, and the 'WhoB' command-line whois client.
Changes: This release fixes some database insertion routines in
pwhois-updatedb. It significantly improves the routeview commands and
some administration features. The documentation was also updated.

[064] - Redet 6.0
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Mon, Apr 11th 2005 00:42
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.
Changes: Substitution is now supported in addition to matching. A variety
of feature tests and palette entries have been added, including those for
substitution backreferences, reluctant quantifiers, and the agrep
metacharacters. A number of layout options were added. Various minor
improvements were made and several minor bugs were fixed.

About: smake is a higly portable make program with automake features.
Changes: The .POSIX: target was documented in the man page. Command
execution now uses /bin/sh -ce again. The $? dyn macro now works correctly
even if the target is in intermediate RECURSETIME state. A workaround was
added for broken Makefiles that contain empty FORCE: targets. Makefile
support for Linux on AMD64 was added.
