[001] - 4Suite 1.0b1 (Development)
  by Mike Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjbrown/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 13:44

Database
Text Processing :: Markup

About: 4Suite is a Python-based toolkit for XML and RDF application
development. It features a library of integrated tools for XML processing,
implementing open technologies such as DOM, RDF, XSLT, XInclude, XPointer,
XLink, XPath, XUpdate, RELAX NG, and XML/SGML Catalogs. Layered upon this
is an XML and RDF data repository and server, which supports multiple
methods of data access, query, indexing, transformation, rich linking, and
rule processing, and provides the data infrastructure of a full database
system, including transactions, concurrency, access control, and
management tools. It also supports HTTP, RPC, SOAP, and FTP, plus APIs in
Python and XSLT.

Changes: This release features minor to huge performance increases
throughout the core libraries (XML parsing, XSLT stylesheet reading, and
XPath evaluation are remarkably faster). All dependencies on PyExpat are
gone. XML_CATALOG_FILES env var support was added. Security risk XPath
extension functions are now disabled by default. XLink, XUpdate, and RDFS
support was improved. Berkeley DB (bsddb) drivers were added. MySQL
drivers were optimized. There are many more bugfixes and enhancements.

[007] - basE91 0.3.0
  by Joachim Henke (http://freshmeat.net/users/johe/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 13:18

Communications :: Email
Internet
System :: Archiving

About: basE91 is an advanced method for converting binary data to ASCII
text. It is similar to UUencode or base64, but is much more efficient. The
overhead produced by basE91 amounts at most to 23% (compare to 33% with
base64). Under some rare circumstances (for example, on 0-byte blocks), it
does a real 8-bit to 7-bit conversion, resulting in an overhead of only
14%. This makes it very useful for sending larger files over binary
insecure connections like email or terminal lines.

Changes: The code was restructured to allow a more universal use of the
basE91 backend, b91enc.java is a bit more similar to the C version now,
and an implementation in PHP was added.

  by Bulb (http://freshmeat.net/users/bulbjh/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 19:32

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Config::Maker takes a file with data in simple hierarchical format
(similar to BIND and DHCP configuration files) and several templates, and
produces the text by filling in the values. It is mainly useful for
creating related configuration files. It can be used to generate firewall
configuration scripts, DNS zone files, DHCP configuration files, a
reference from a single file with all users and machines, etc. It's useful
when you are not satisfied with keeping information synchronized in several
places, but don't want something as complex as cfengine. Snippets of Perl
can be used if all else fails.

[012] - Domain Technologie Control 0.17.0-R3
  by Thomas Goirand (http://freshmeat.net/users/zigo/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 00:58

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web-based control panel for
hosting that can delegate the task of creating subdomains, email, and FTP
accounts to users for the domain names they own. It has support for many
programs, including bind 8 and 9, MySQL, Apache, PHP 4, qmail, Postfix,
Courier, Dovecot, ProFTPD, Webalizer, and mod-log-sql. It can also
generate backup scripts, calculation scripts, and config files using a
single system UID/GID, and monitor all traffic accounting per user and per
service. It is fully skinnable and translated into several languages.

Changes: A lot of code cleanup was done because error_reporting was
switched to E_ALL. The installer now works on Red Hat and Mac OS X, and a
new FreeBSD port was added. Backup NS and MX are now intelligently cached
in files, and "lynx -s" is used if fopen() with HTTPS is not available
(prior PHP 4.3). Apache restart checking was improved. The installer
restarts all daemons after configuration. The panel can now handle CNAME
and TXT records.

[013] - Enblend 2.3
  by Andrew Mihal (http://freshmeat.net/users/mihal/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 19:23

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Enblend is a postprocessing tool for creating panoramic images.
After you align image features using a program like Hugin, there are often
photometric problems that lead to ugly seams in the final composite.
Enblend blends away these seams using a multiresolution spline. This
technique gives good results on both low spatial frequency objects (sky
and clouds) and high spatial frequency objects (trees and houses).

Changes: This release fixes bugs in the 2.2 release. The number of levels
you can specify with the -l parameter has been reduced from 30 to 29 to
avoid an arithmetic overflow. On the Windows version, improved handling of
temporary files should fix the "unable to open temporary file" bug.

  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 00:39

Software Development
Utilities

About: The Erwin library is a data structure template library for C and
C++. To avoid the C++ template mechanism, a Perl script generates C files
that are compiled into a library. It can be included in other libraries or
in applications. The implemented data types are vectors (dynamic arrays)
and lists, both of arbitrary element types, and hash tables (maps) of
arbitrary key and value types. The implementation is very efficient and
also provides a sophisticated, easy-to-learn interface with a lot of
useful functions.

server responses (HTTP headers) instead of the NTP protocol. If you are
behind a corporate firewall or proxy server, HTP will still be able to
synchronize the time. For high precision time synchronization, use ntpd.

Changes: The polling mechanism has been improved once more. As of this
version, polls are also spread within the polling cycle. This way, a time
offset will be detected earlier, without increasing the polling frequency.
Sleep time isn't written to syslog anymore; only time adjustments. Previous
versions tried to close a already closed HTTP/1.0 session.

[029] - IP Tables State 1.4
  by Phil (http://freshmeat.net/users/JaymzH/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 01:14

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: IP Tables State implements the "state top" feature from IP Filter
for IP Tables. "State top" displays the states held by your stateful
firewall in a "top"-like manner. Since IP Tables doesn't have a built-in
way to easily display this information once, an option was added to
iptstate to do this.

Changes: This version introduces the ability to filter what gets shown by
the source and/or destination IP address. It also has new features which
allow you to mark entries where hostnames have been truncated and to
supress the display of DNS entries to make name-resolution mode more
useful. A lot of code and documentation cleanups were also made.

Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: kdetv is a KDE application to watch TV on the desktop. Features
include deinterlacing (DScaler algorithms), three view modes, a channel
scanner, the ability to import the channel files of three other TV
programs, teletext and closed caption decoding, and an easy-to-use

About: ksb26 (Kernel Socks Bouncer for 2.6.x) is a patch for the Linux
2.6.x kernel that redirects full TCP connections through socks 4/5 chains.
ksb26 uses a character device to pass socks 4/5 and the target IP addresses
to the Linux kernel. This is obviously quite useful if you want to

Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: MQS (Minimalist Queue Services) is a minimalist queueing system
that provides a set of basic methods in order to offer asynchronous
messaging for program/application. Applications can use this type of
services in order to store and retrieve messages to a dedicated queue in
the queue services. This allows you to avoid direct connection between
applications and provides a simple asynchronous communication system. It
provides a simple set of XML-RPC methods for pushing and getting messages
in a specific queue (so you can use the system with any application that
can talk XML-RPC). The queues are stored in a database (e.g., MySQL) or in
dedicated db files (e.g. QDBM).

About: MPlayer is a movie and animation player that supports a wide range
of codecs and file formats, including MPEG 1/2/4, DivX 3/4/5, Windows
Media 7/8/9, RealAudio/Video up to 9, Quicktime 5/6, and Vivo 1/2. It has
many MMX/SSE(2)/3Dnow(Ex) optimized native audio and video codecs, but
allows using XAnim's and RealPlayer's binary codec plugins, and Win32
codec DLLs. It has basic VCD/DVD playback functionality, including DVD
subtitles, but supports many text-based subtitle formats too. For video
output, nearly every existing interface is supported. It's also able to
convert any supported files to raw/divx/mpeg4 AVI (pcm/mp3 audio), and
even video grabbing from V4L devices.

Changes: Two security bugs in the MMST and RTSP code were fixed. MPEG
output file support for easy VCD and DVD creation was added to MEncoder,
along with multiple file encoding. The encoding documentation was greatly
improved. Quite a few audio and video codecs were added, most notably
snow, a next generation, wavelet-based video codec. Lots of bugfixes were

About: psmon is a Perl script which can be run as a stand-alone program or

daemonizing uses syslog with PERROR, so errors are also logged to the
connected terminal. Once it's been daemonized or started to do an actual
process check, it reopens the syslog connection without PERROR so that log
entries only end up in syslog. A psmon-config utility script has been
added. There are various other minor fixes and enhancements.

[058] - rxvt-unicode 5.4
  by Marc A. Lehmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcg1/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 16:09

Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Internationalization
Terminals

About: rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt,
modified to store text in Unicode (either UCS-2 or UCS-4) and to use
locale-correct input and output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at
the same time, including Xft fonts.

Changes: This release temporarily disables priority-based keymatching,
which caused custom keymappings to overwrite combinations with other
modifiers pressed than the mapping specified. On the feature front, an
underline (non-block) cursor mode has been implemented. A way to switch
off pointerBlankDelay has been documented, and the cursor blinking code is
now compiled-in via --enable-frills.

Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Skaringa is an API for Java and XML language binding. It transforms
Java objects into XML documents and back, and can generate XML schema
definitions for a Java class. Typical applications are data exchange,
object persistence, object transformation, and driving XML based
presentation layers. Skaringa is designed for speed and simplicity,
supporting a wide range of types. It works with all Plain Old Java Objects
(POJOs) and is not limited to special cases, like JavaBeans.

Changes: The Skaringa JAR file is now named skaringa.jar without any
version number. This makes updates easier. The version number can still be
detected by examining the MANIFEST of the JAR file. Some bugs were fixed.

System :: Archiving

About: Splitpipe accepts the streamed output of a program such as tar on
standard input and distributes it over multiple chunks. These chunks
contain labels that guarantee integrity, verify that the entire chunk is
read, and that they are read in the proper order. This allows for the
backup of full filesystems to DVD or CD, at high speed.

Changes: This version has been succesfully used to backup a filesystem,
but should not yet be trusted for anything mission critical.

[064] - Task Coach 0.31
  by Frank Niessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/fniessink/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 13:15

Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.

Changes: This release has migrated to Python 2.4.1 and wxPython 2.5.5.1.
In the task list and effort list, the task column is automatically
resized. Columns have been added to the task list view for budget, total
budget, budget left, and total budget left. This release reorganizes the
view menu, adds extra task filters, and adds a menu item to reset filters.

[067] - UESQLC 0.10.0
  by Rafael Jesus Alcantara Perez (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralcan/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 13:04

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Universal Embedded SQL Compiler (UESQLC) is a compiler that
provides a common way for accessing heterogeneous databases. UESQLC is
based on Structured Query Language (SQL) as a standard for accessing data.
This interface provides maximum interoperability, i.e. a single application
can access different SQL Database Management Systems (DBMS) through a
common set of embedded SQL code (UESQL). This enables a developer to build
and distribute a client/server application without targeting a specific
DBMS.

Changes: This release replaces the old PostgreSQL 6.2.x CDML with a more
current and correct version. It adds support on Java for SQL TIMESTAMP. It
removes the auto-commit at the end of UESQL blocks, so the commit must be
done manually. Incorrect use of the term "schema" instead of "catalog" has
been fixed. There are many internal enhancements and fixes.

[071] - XDBCMS 0.10 pre
  by Carl Beech (http://freshmeat.net/users/carlbeech/)
  Sun, Apr 17th 2005 13:54

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: XDBCMS is a Web-based, multi-user CMS that can manage any number of
Web sites, each site with any number of pages, and each site organised in a
tree-based menu that can be any depth. Where XDBCMS differs from most
content management systems is that it actually generates a stand-alone Web
site, which requires no database to drive it, can be 'released' to any Web
server, and would be able to cope with very large numbers of users. For
the authors, it features a WYSIWYG editor, similar to MS-Word in
appearance, allowing full control over the format (tables, fonts,
graphics, etc.) of each individual page. It allows multiple authors and
features a group-based security system.

Changes: A new 'News' facility where news items can be entered to the
system, together with a synopsis and start and finish dates. The relevant
news items are included into the Web site each time the site is
re-generated.

Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: smake is a higly portable make program with automake features.

Changes: smake -p now includes comment headlines that allow for better
identification of the various sections in the output. This release
switches from the custom "Simple Pattern Rules" for implicit rules to
POSIX Single and Double suffix Rules. Special code has been added that
helps to deal with some empty FORCE: like pseudo-targets. A parser bug
that caused problems with single character macros has been fixed. There is
better EOF checking in the parser to avoid infinite loops. Simple Suffix
Rules are no longer allowed to start with "./", as this is a valid target
name.
