by S.Fourmanoit (http://freshmeat.net/users/syfou2/)
Mon, Apr 18th 2005 06:37
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: adesklets is an interactive Imlib2 console for the X Window system.
It provides to scripted languages a clean and simple way to write great
looking, mildly interactive desktop integrated graphic applets (aka
"desklets"). It can also be used as a command line oriented graphics
editor, a bit similar to ImageMagick, but with different functionality.
Changes: This release changes the global macro definitions for adesklets
to compile without problems on FreeBSD 5.x. It also adds fake root window
detection for KDE.

by jebe (http://freshmeat.net/users/jebe/)
Mon, Apr 18th 2005 14:40
Desktop Environment :: Tools
About: AllTray is software that allows users to dock any application into
the system tray. You can dock (for example) Mozilla Thunderbird, Evolution,
and even terminals. A highlight feature is that a click on the "close"
button of an application will minimize it to the system tray. It works
well with Gnome, KDE, XFCE 4, Fluxbox, and WindowMaker.
Changes: New release have special XMMS support: minimize to tray, "Play",
"Pause", and "Next" in the menu, and a nice icon. Balloon shaped tooltips.
Efforts to avoid a visible window before it is docked/reparented ("flash
effect").

by JamesDavidBlackwell (http://freshmeat.net/users/JamesDavidBlackwell/)
Mon, Apr 18th 2005 23:04
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: The Bazaar Revision Control System is a changeset-oriented
revision control system based on Arch that makes it possible to retain
previous changes to projects and coordinate development with other
developers. Its goal is to speed development of an upwards- compatible
version of Arch.
Changes: This point release corrects two performance regressions from baz
1.2 and a major correctness regression in "update". The "update" operation
was using the wrong reference inode signature, resulting in changes not
being applied. Ancestry gathering was too greedy, leading to the "status"
and "diff" operations taking a very long time to complete. The "get"
operation would scan entire versions even when not necessary.

simple galleries for your photos, authentication, and QuickQuotes for
citing passages in your comments.
Changes: The formatting functionality was rewritten and simplified,
automatic URL detection was improved, kubrick was upgraded to v1.2.6, the
content feed was updated to RSS 2.0, and some internal consistency issues
were fixed.

[007] - Cake/PHP framework 0.2.7
by Pies (http://freshmeat.net/users/pies/)
Mon, Apr 18th 2005 08:19
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Cake is an Model-View-Controller framework (a structure of
libraries, classes, and run-time infrastructure) for PHP, based on Ruby on
Rails. It features CRUD (Create-Read-Update-Delete) for database access,
and simplified querying so you shouldn't need to write SQL for basic
operations. It has a request dispatcher with custom URLs, fast and
flexible templating, and works from a Web site subdirectory with very
little Apache configuration involved (requires .htaccess files and
mod_rewrite to work)
Changes: A code generator, scripts/add.php, was added to create
controllers, views, and models on demand. New form generators in
Controller include input_tag(), input_password_tag(), input_file_tag(),
and radio_tags(). The new Flay class parses text to HTML using a
pseudo-code similar to Textile's. The new Folder class for browsing disk
directories was added. Data validation (using regular expressions) is now
done in Model. Bugfixes and cleanups were done.

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Freeciv is a multiuser reimplementation for Unix/X of the famous
Microprose game of Civilization. By default, the game is an improved Civ
II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU
General Public License. It is maintained by an international team of
coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive
network games out there.
Changes: This release adds many new features, including diplomacy for AI
players, better AI, isometric maps, more flexible modpacks, an integrated
way to start the game using only the client, many user interface
improvements, and improved support for Windows and MacOSX.

by Dominik Seichter (http://freshmeat.net/users/domseichter/)
Mon, Apr 18th 2005 08:28
Office/Business
Printing
About: KBarcode is a barcode and label printing application for KDE 3. It
can be used to print everything from simple business cards up to complex
labels with several barcodes, such as article descriptions. KBarcode comes
with an easy-to-use WYSIWYG label designer, a setup wizard, batch import of
labels (directly from the delivery note), thousands of predefined labels,
database managment tools, and translations in many languages. Even
printing more than 10,000 labels in one go is no problem for KBarcode.
Additionally, it is a simple xbarcode replacement for the creation of
barcodes. All major types of barcodes like EAN, UPC, CODE39, and ISBN are
supported.
Changes: Support for images was greatly improved, so an image path can
come from the database. JavaScript support was added, so visibility of
elements on the label can be scripted. A better command-line interface was
added. The batch printing wizard was enhanced further. Many bugs were
fixed, including a frequent crash in the label editor.

Mon, Apr 18th 2005 05:23
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: OpenVPN is a robust and highly configurable VPN (Virtual Private
Network) daemon which can be used to securely link two or more private
networks using an encrypted tunnel over the Internet. OpenVPN's principal
strengths include wide cross-platform portability, excellent stability,
support for dynamic IP addresses and NAT, adaptive link compression,
single TCP/UDP port usage, a modular design that offloads most crypto
tasks to the OpenSSL library, and relatively easy installation that in
most cases doesn't require a special kernel module.
Changes: This release improves scalability and offers centralized
management for VPN configurations supporting a large number of clients. It
adds load balancing and failover support, a new management interface
providing real-time control of running OpenVPN daemons, and major
revisions to the documentation, including a complete rewrite of the HOWTO.

About: XBlast is a multi-player arcade game for X11 and MS Windows with
raytraced graphics. The game can be played with at least two players and
up to six players. It was inspired by the video/computer game Bomberman
(Dynablaster).
